Mr. Heartbreak
Is there a Dark Star on DP 9? That's MSG 9/16/90 right? Did you mean DP 19 which is Oklahoma City 10/19/73? I think he meant the new Dave's Picks #9, which does indeed have a Dark Star on it. Kind of a weird, meandering one with a lot of feedback, actually. Just started listening to a SBD of a show from 10/21/83, and hot damn...nice Music Never Stopped opener. Jerry is all over the fretboard on this show. No wonder people on Dead.net are always crying out for more 80s releases. Even froggy voice Jerry can deliver on the solos. jw harding
I also think Live/Dead was a significant part of most people's introduction to the Dead, and the first track being that amazing Dark Star, it raises it up to mythical status. Although a lot of Dark Stars don't reach those heights, there are versions like the one from Veneta in 72 that are among the peak of their catalog. Add to that the rarity of the tune - it was only played 5 times between 1975 through 1988, then played another 30 or so times in their last 6 years. As for Playin in the Band, the tune pales in comparison for a lot of reasons: Bobby vs. Jerry tunes, goofy lyrics vs classic psychedelia. Dark Star is a better tune to trip out to, Playin is a more accessible rocker, although they could take it real far out and get weird at times, and I dig the Main Ten theme when they go back into the tune. I only saw one Dark Star - Spring of 94 at Rosemont Horizon. Third row, right in front of Jerry. They started it from a complete stop rather than drifting into it. The place went insane when they hit those first notes - da duh da duh... There's nothing quite like it. It's a Pavlovian thing for Deadheads. The rest of the Dark Star was unremarkable, but that's an all time concert experience for sure.

(I don't count the little tease they did at Soldier Field in 91.)
Lammycat
Caught the Warlocks DS. Don't recall any others off the top of my head but likely caught a few more.
jw harding
A whole lot of awesome in this interview with Bob Weir about collaborations with Wilco and MMJ. Particularly love the fact that it was Jeff's idea to play Dark Star. Knowing Jeff's previous ambivalence toward the Dead, he really decided to just go for it. And then to cap it all off on the last night with St, Stephen. A Deadhead/Wilco lover's dream come true. Although Bob Weir's inclinations can be questionable at times, the guy is a living legend and a musical genius in his own singular way. http://www.jambands.com/features/2014/02/14/bob-weir-ramps-up-ratdog/

choo-choo-charlie
In a bunch of the live shows 1997-1999, during Kingpin jams, he'd take shots at the Dead in his stage banter while Jay Bennett was going off on a wild solo. I remember one show on the BT tour they started playing a really slow version of Ripple for about a minute and he sang it really loud and off-key, in a very mocking tone. Some good recordings of it. worldrecordplayer
Didn't Wilco play with Phil several years ago, outdoors in N. Cali? I seem to remember a YouTube video. Box of Rain, or Ripple? Sent from my Windows Phone using Tapatalk

Lammycat
Ordered this book yesterday after reading an excerpt on fb concerning Brent's death. jw harding
I wasn't aware that Jerry Band ever did Not Fade Away. Here it is from 77. I think about 20 minutes long. Vocally a lot different. Nice groove. http://youtu.be/b-Moqvg_Au0?t=1h46m3s

Analogman
I have not read the whole thing yet - but in the new GD Almanac there is some news about all the Road Trips series being available in digital format.
Mr. Heartbreak
So Dave's Picks Vol. 6 (w/ bonus disc) was announced in mid-January 2013. But it's now past mid-February 2014, and still no announcement. I'm really curious, although I did not subscribe this year. If it sounds good enough, I might order one of these before it sells out. What are people expecting? Something from the missing/returned reels?

Analogman
I wonder if those downloads come with the liner notes/artwork?
calvino
I would hope so, but don't know. All the downloads I got from HD Tracks have liner notes in a PDF format. Only 100 left of the Spring 77 set ---- anybody who purchased this have any thoughts. This would be the first box set that I passed up purchasing, other than the Formerly the Warlocks set. This would be the first box set that I passed up purchasing, other than the Formerly the Warlocks set.I have it. Highly recommend it. Five shows from May '77, other than the highly circulated Cornell, Buffalo, etc. Sound is excellent (that's an understatement), the packaging is great. Don't hesitate, get one of the last ones! In full disclosure (these things are not cheap), I bought the box primarily because I was at the St. Louis show that's included, and had never had a copy of that show. But I'm glad to have it. But this is the only one I listen to on a consistent basis. It is absolutely amazing. Every show is strong, with some astounding moments in each. Sound quality can't be beat. Lammycat
Never got the Warlocks shows (save for tapes). Might need to look into that. Those were some smokin' shows.
Analogman
I've never bought any of those except the WB studio box and So Many Roads. I think I have crappy mp3 files of the Fillmore West 1969: The Complete Recordings boxset. I burned the files to cds several years ago.
