Winston Legthigh
I can't help wondering whether their celebrity status kept them from being charged with domestic violence/battery instead.I think someone has to press charges for those crimes. So, assuming neither of them were willing to press charges against the other, the police could still make a disorderly conduct arrest.

I don't know how it works in every state, but I've watched episodes of Cops where neither party wanted to press charges, but they were informed that the law required that they be arrested (due to signs of injury) and the charges were pressed by the state. "Under Connecticut law we're obligated to make an arrest because it was domestic violence," Krolikowski said. Neither Simon nor Brickell was taken into custody, but were issued misdemeanor summons to appear in court. http://www.courant.com/news/connecticut/hc-paul-simon-domestic-violence-arrest-0429-20140428,0,2379548.story

Mr. Heartbreak
Dang, the internet comments sections on this story are full of these little one-liner references to Paul's songs.I really like Paul, but apparently he can be a real douche if you are Edie Brickell or a member of Los Lobos. Seems like "special treatment" would have meant not arresting them at all...
