Sure Jules was a royal pain in the ass in the political discussions, but that wasn't where he stepped over the line.  My interpretation of his transgression was far more personal and mean spirited than that.

i've never had a problem with speedracer - we've had personal emails, sending eachother disks and so forth over the years.

She sent me a bunch of Bennet era concert dvds.   That was very kind and generous of her.

I don't know what either of them did to get banned.  I guess it's not really any of my business.

Gosh, I always make sure to make it my business when someone who has done me a kindness disappears from a community. Bystander apathy is a terrible thing.

Unfortunately, it's the only course of action we're allowed to take here.

I couldn't agree more with Chinese Apple and bleedorange, but questioning the decisions of the moderators is out of bounds.  It's too bad because I think the specific incident that led to Jules' banning (if it is what I think it is) could be open to multiple interpretations. I think it also breeds an us against them mentality which actually fuels as much flaming, trolling, etc. and it is designed to curtail.

to answer the OP's thread question:  yes.

Hey- thanks for the heads up, Atticus! (I'm glad that you and Louie B are still here.) And thanks everyone for your insight. (Godspeed, Speedracer, if you are still checking in.)

I totally respect the decisions of the moderators. I just wanted to be sure that there was due process because most of her posts that I enjoyed, and also her offline help to me in figuring out some technology, seemed in the best spirit of community and so, seemed incongruous to me that she would have done something to get herself banned. Anyway, we are not supposed to discuss these things here. If anyone would like to discuss this offline I would welcome it, but that is it for me on this topic.

She sent a bunch to me, also --- she made the offer to many people on the board, right after Bennett's death.

I, too, had positive PM interactions with her. Jules was Jules, never understood why people got all twisted knickers. Too bad that I was on one of my VC hiatuses when they were banned. Being human equals being curious. C'est la vie, say the old folks...

Guest Lorne

Oh, thank you so much for the kind words everyone. :) The mods and I had a difference of opinion in 2011 regarding the management of this community. And again about three months ago (though denying who I was for six months didn't help), and I'm sure we will have another difference of opinion before day's end, though it would be wonderful if we didn't. Truce?

I'm underwhelmed by some of the solo stuff I've heard so far but I'm looking forward to Sukirae and eagerly await a tote bag pre-order email. I think Spencer has mad chops and a bright future, and I was excited to hear the return of some Loose Fur style guitar effects on I'll Sing It.

One more year of law school, potential nice job on the horizon if it pans out, and I'm eating some hella good donuts right this minute. I have cats and they are the best. I may have a moth problem but I like a challenge.

Jules is an alright guy. What bugged me about him at first that I came to admire is that he's always right - or right more frequently than the average man. If he said someone's argument was weak or the poster wasn't making a point it was usually true, and when it was me he was saying that too good LORD it pissed me off. But in the end that's what I came to like about him. (I mean I still like that about him. Banned but not dead. ¡Viva Jules!) Smart dude, but I won't fault anyone for their opinion.

Sorry I'll get your nice thread deleted; hopefully they just lock it. Or keep it open. Who knows?

Be well, world! May you have all of the good things in life.

Welcome back, Lorne. I (almost) always enjoyed your posts too, even when I disagreed with you. Hope you stick around.

And as for Crow's remarks about our imminent demise, I could quote Pogo "We have met the enemy and he is us." I love this place and I think there are quite a few other people who do too. We can make the place what we want it to be.

.

What state will you practice in? In my construct of you beyond this board that seems exactly the sort of profession you would be in. I bet you'd be a terrific litigator.

I don't feel I have a right to know about the bad deeds of everyone who has been nice to me.  That's not apathy.

I actually assumed she left of her own accord.  If I recall, she promised to leave this forum if Wilco made another subpar record.  Then Wilco made another subpar record.  Then she was gone.

In what way do you feel like these are the same thing?

I'm not sure what you're asking.  They're clearly opposites.

I felt like I was being accused of apathy, and I responded by explaining that I am not apathetic.

Oh, I was not accusing you of apathy. "Bystander apathy" (or bystander effect) is an entirely different thing altogether, and is about how groups behave and not about any individual. More here: http://lesswrong.com/lw/9j/bystander_apathy/

I made a reference to this phenomenon primarily to justify my own proclivity for not minding my own business where people I like are concerned.
