This is what I mean about the boys truly losing their spiritual leader when Jerry died.  They all have been doing their own things with varying degrees of success.  However, it would have been great if the boys had just found another colleague rather than hire lead guitar players here and there for under-rehearsed tours.  Maybe if Hornsby had stayed as the musical director and they'd gotten a clean, yet original guitar player a la Steve Kimock that was interesting on his own rather than a Jerry clone.

Just rambling.  I think it's just hype and kind of shitty that they marketed this final Grateful Dead gig and then they are going out as the Dead.  So the ultimate draw of the Fare Thee Well shows is Trey and Hornsby?  So Weird.

Hey, it doesn't matter, really. I don't care what the lineup is, but I've seen a million P&F lineups.

My dream lineup would be, Phil, Bobby, Mickey, Bill, Barry Sless (on guitar & pedal steel for appropriate tunes), Bruce, and Mike Finnegan on organ.

And Donna. Yes I said it, DONNA JEAN.

Absolutely Barry Sless!  That would rock.  Imagine if they'd been touring with the same line up of and on for the last 20 years.  This really would be something to see.  Finnegan would be good, but please don't let him sing.  He's a cheese ball!  :-)

BTW, that Althea Weir did with Meyer was pretty bad.  Like really bad.  Wrong notes etc.  Comments were hilarious though...Scarlet>Body Is a Wonderland>Fire!

One of the best? As far as modern blues guitar players go, for which there are few, he's got nothing on Dan Auerbach, Jack White, Gary Clark, Derek Trucks. He's good at mimicking others, but has done nothing original. In the history of blues guitar players, he is completely forgettable, and contributes nothing as far as improv based music goes. Just a giant dooch. I mean, he's no fucking Nels Cline, that's for sure. Fuck that ass hat. Who would really spend there time listening to Mayer's music, when there are so many better guitar players in the genre. Just because it is a dying genre doesn't mean we should exalt this clown. He's a competent guitar player, but let's not get crazy about his talents or imagination, nor ignore his deficiencies.

I mean, whatever floats your boat, but why in the name of all things holy would you waste your time listening to his music when you could be listening to something so much superior?

To be clear, its not that I go around listening to JM, but when I do it's the live Trio stuff. Which, judging from the number of references to You Body is a Wonderwall here I suspect many folks have not checked out. I think he's a great blues guitar player. You don't, I get it. I don't think Auerbach is a great blues guitar player, you apparently do. And why bring Nels up if the conversation is about blues players. I've heard JM improvise and jam, he can do it and do it well. I've seen Phil with all sorts of different players, this would just be another one (unfortunately it likely won't be with Phil). Jerry's been dead a long time, of course he embodied the spirit of the Dead more than anyone. But the songs live on. I for one would be happy to hear Mayer play them, hope everyone else stays away. Fine with that.

Not sure why I threw Nels in there, guess I was saying that Mayer is not that great of an improv player either.

It's fine if some people like Mayer, but they all seem to need to justify their taste by saying he is a great blues player, for which the evidence is lacking. Where are the great songs, solos, riffs? He's pretty good at copying other people's stuff. There are a lot of strat players that can do that, and if not for the Wonderland fame, he would not be given the time of day. If Howlin Wolf met Mayer, he would stab him in the head.

And his voice is like a worse version of Dave Mathews.

I like that they switch the lead guitar slot up with the The Dead shows, Furthur shows, etc. If they had simply selected one dude and gone on from there it'd seem a disservice to the GD, for some reason, to me. I never get the "Garcia clone" stuff, either. If the guitar work wasn't similar to what it should be, wouldn't that be worse?

No doubt. I'm betting they're all content doing what they've been doing or they wouldn't have been doing it. If they (any of the remaining members) want to do a tour with John Mayer or Adam Ant or whomever they want , they should.

Just listened to The Matrix 12.1.66 for first time in awhile. Grainy, but a fun listen.

Listening to 2/27/71 again today --- what a fun mess with the Beach Boys. I have never came upon a picture of them sharing the stage that night -- has anyone?

One of my first boots.

I don't think I've seen a pic, either. I still have this show on cassette (a BASF or comparable quality) I got in 8th or 9th grade.

I don't see it that way, but it's cool. I'm in the frame of mind that they don't really owe the fans much at this point and I don't really get bummed about who they play with or where or for how much. I see it more like they're the crazy uncle or grandpa at the dinner table and can do whatever they want and have earned not catching shit for it.

I don't see this extended tour happening. I say that as I recall Phil is supposedly done with doing tours. I guess we will see. I'd say it's a money grab if they do such a thing.

I'm in this camp too, but it took me a few weeks to get there. :lol

At this point, I'd rather see Wilco shows than any of the dregs of the Dead. I can enjoy my collection, and if I want "new" music from them, that's what Dave's Picks is for.
