What Uncle Tupelo song should Wilco tackle on their next tour?

Recommended Posts

Wonder how Jeff would feel about covering a Jay song with Wilco? I think that would be pretty interesting.

Maybe:
"Outdone"

I think that would be pretty hot.

Not sure what you are driving at but I would like to see more Tupelo songs in the mix at a Wilco show.

i'm just saying that a Wilco show proper (not a solo Jeff or a Tweedy band show), to my knowledge, hasn't played a UT song in a long time. sure, when AM and maybe Being There were the only records out, they played a UT song or two as well. i'm just not sure how recent they've actually done this...to my knowledge, it hasn't been for a long time. but i could be wrong.

Cold Shoulder

Wait Up

No Sense In Loving

If we're talking about songs that UT covered, then my list would include:

Great Atomic Power

I Wanna Destroy You

Left In The Dark

Sin City

I do recall that Wilco once did perform No Depression once, even though Jay did the lead vocal when UT recorded it.

great topic, remphish. here's my list:

1. acuff-rose: mostly selfish on this one. i missed my request being fulfilled last week in boston and have still never seen it live (though thanks to knotgreen, at least got a taste on video). not likely with the full band, but still.

2. gun: a likely contender, at least in that wilco has played it a handful of times before. also a longtime personal fave.

3. still be around: probably the darkest horse of all. like poptodd said, i don't know how jeff would feel about playing/singing a jay tune, but this is one that has always given me chills since first becoming a UT fan in the early '90's.

4. punch drunk: ditto on the unlikelyhood of this one (being a jay tune), but i think it would rip, especially with nels and glenn. somewhere on VC there's an amazing video of UT playing this one at the middle east in cambridge from 1990 that makes me smile every time i watch it. jeff and jay at their punkest.

5. the long cut: the gruff scratchiness of jeff's singing on this one has always appealed to me. reminds me a little of his delivery in dreamer in my dreams, but with a darker, more urgent tone to the lyrics (we've been in a deep rut, and it's been killin' me). another great punky blast in the UT canon.

do what i did. try to 'bump' into jeff before the show and ask him to play it it at the end of the show on his own - it worked for me once!
