tinnitus photography
this is a good question, but one that taxes my failing memory. i think the Damned's cover of "Alone Again Or" was my first exposure to Love. sad to say, but i am also pretty sure that Blake Babies' cover of "Loose" was my first Stooges experience. Sonic Youth's cover of "Hotwire My Heart" was certainly the first time I heard Crime. and CVB's cover of "I Love Her All The Time" may or may not have pre-dated when I first heard Bad Moon Rising. Mr. Lynch
I discovered The Handsome Family after hearing Jeff Tweedy cover "So Much Wine" at the Winnipeg Folk Festival a few years ago. I was frantically scribbling down lyrics at the time, thinking this might be another long lost Wilco gem. Now, I adore The Handsome Family.
i'm only sleeping
^ditto, same experience in other solo Tweedy gig. Also Bill Fay, via Tweedy/Wilco Edit - And back in the Cambrian age, I still recall discovering the Stones through the Beatles' I wanna be your man

uncool2pillow
The closest I can think of right now is Big Star through the Replacements' "Alex Chilton". Not quite the same.
ih8music
^ same Also, Jawbreaker via Lucero's cover of "Kiss the Bottle"
Winston Legthigh
this is a good question, but one that taxes my failing memory. i think the Damned's cover of "Alone Again Or" was my first exposure to Love. Same song, but through a different band: Calexico. I remember as a kid being surprised that Come Together came from the Beatles and not from Aerosmith.
lost highway
The closest I can think of right now is Big Star through the Replacements' "Alex Chilton". Not quite the same.Me too. Also as a kid cutting my teeth on punk rock in the early 90's I had some weird ones like: Husker Du via LifetimeThe Who via Green DayWire via Minor ThreatThe Monkees via Minor ThreatWipers via Nirvana
anthony
This is an interesting question. The thing that come to mind for me is listening to the early Led Zeppelin records then going back and finding Willie Dixon and Robert Johnson.
Skian
Cass McCombs - via - Andrew Bird covering "Meet Me Here at Dawn" Andrew Bird - via - touring with Wilco. (Andrew Bird also appeared on the Colbert Report)
brownie
NRBQ via Yo La Tengo's cover of What Can I Say on their Fakebook album. I went on to become a bigger fan of NRBQ than of Yo La Tengo!
PopTodd
Oh yeah!• The Nerves -- ("Hanging On the Telephone" - Blondie)• Jim Ford -- ("Ju Ju Man" - Brinsley Schwarz)• Ronnie Self -- ("Home In My Hand" - Brinsley Schwarz)• Gene Clark -- ("Why Not Your Baby?" - Velvet Crush)• Daniel Johnston -- ("Speeding Motorcycle" - Yo La Tengo)
PopTodd
The closest I can think of right now is Big Star through the Replacements' "Alex Chilton". Not quite the same.I discovered Big Star the exact same way.I'm sure a lot of us did. Nice call, even if it isn't quite the same.
Chez
I discovered and became a fan of Vic Chesnutt through the Gravity of the Situation tribute album.
lost highway
I went on to become a bigger fan of NRBQ than of Yo La Tengo! Now don't get crazy. (I'm going to have to check out NRBQ).
PopTodd
Now don't get crazy. (I'm going to have to check out NRBQ).A band that I keep meaning to, but forgetting to check out.
Moss
This may sound crazy but Elton Johns Pinball wizard was my entry into The Who. Hey I was 7.
Oil Can Boyd
When I was 15 I saw the Jerry Garcia Band play Tangled Up in Blue. I bought Blood on the Tracks the next day and have probably listened to it more than any other album.
Hixter
This may sound crazy but Elton Johns Pinball wizard was my entry into The Who. Same here. I sent my mother out on a quest for Elton John's version in 1975 but she came back with The Who's single. Best allowance dollar I ever spent.
uncool2pillow
While I was well aware of the Beatles. That awful Sgt. Pepper movie with the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton is probably the beginning of my serious fandom.
ih8music
Not quite the same, but the first Mermaid Avenue album really opened me up to the brilliance of Woody Guthrie.
Lammycat
Two bands I discovered via REM:WirePylonI saw Pylon open for REM on the Green tour. Hadn't heard their name in a long while. NRBQ is a great, fun band. Look into Kick Me Hard, At Yankee Stadium, and/or the first one, NRBQ. The compilation 2-disc Peek-a-Boo is good for what it is, too (greatest hits deal). Moss
Same here. I sent my mother out on a quest for Elton John's version in 1975 but she came back with The Who's single. Best allowance dollar I ever spent. Sadly I ended up with the Tommy Movie Soundtrack instead of the Who version. Nothing quite like Oliver Reed singing. But it certainly lead me to the real thing.
