You're all about Trouble In Mind, aren't you?

:)

Yeah, I realized that last night when I saw the Trouble In Mind FB page.  Someone a few years ago told me their records are cheap, so I bought a Paperhead record on a whim and liked it.  Omni is a local band I like, so I would support them regardless of label. But I need to check out more Trouble in Mind bands based on liking those two.

A great label. They and Soundway are my 2 favorite current labels. Both have released a ton of great stuff.

I recommend Ultimate Painting's 2 records, too. Great stuff.

I've only heard a few minutes of Ultimate Painting, but I liked it.  I'll check out Soundway.  You and I seem to be the only Cate Le Bon fans here, so I trust your opinion.

It's kind of early, there's still a few albums coming out this year... I haven't got the new Mavis album either. But I love making lists and I made an active effort this year to seek out new music which I haven't been good about doing in the last decade... so here goes... roughly in order:

Benjamin Booker - Witness

Kevin Morby - City Music

Mac Demarco - This Old Dog
Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile - Lotta Sea Lice

The War On Drugs - A Deeper Understanding
Iron & Wine - Beast Epic
Hiss Golden Messenger - Hallelujah Anyhow
Ryan Adams - Prisoner
Beck - Colors
Big Thief - Capacity
Fleet Foxes - Crack-Up
Kacy & Clayton - The Siren's Song

Waxahatchee - Out In The Storm

That was 13.... this is hard. I also really like the new National, Margo Price, Jen Cloher, and Destroyer records. Also, my list doesn't include new but old music like Neil Young's Hitchhiker or Jeff's solo album of old songs, both of which I thought were great. Plus I don't feel like I gave the New Pornographers a fair enough shake when that came out, so I should probably listen to it again before the year is out. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I will slim this list down before December 31! Or, I will try.

Funny, I think of myself as someone who knows a bit about music and is always looking for new acts to like.  I have never heard of any of these....LOL...I guess I have an opportunity to find some new music (at least for me).

looking through my 2017 purchases and not counting live records or reissues, these stuck with me:

Elder - Relfections of a Floating World

Grails - Hymnal Chalice

(those are the top two - here are 8 others)

Mountain Movers - S/T

Sundays & Cybele - Chaos and Systems

Dire Wolves - Excursion To Cloudland

Samsara Blues Experiment - One With The Universe

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - The French Press

Wear Your Wounds - WYW
Slowdive  - Slowdive

The Oh Sees - Orc

honorable mention to Kevin Morby, Courtney and Kurt, Crystal Fairy, Mark Eitzel, Shadow Band, The Obsessed.

this year wasn't as good for new music, but i am sure i'll be discovering 2017 titles that i really like in another year or two.

I feel like I didn't engage enough to hit 10. Some of the ones I like are still on my 'to buy' list, and I still need to listen more. All said, I dig:

Big Thief- Capacity

Rainer Maria- S/T

Hiss Golden Messenger- Hallelujah Anyhow

Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett

So far I'm feeling kind of disappointed with the new Queens of the Stone Age and the new Ted Leo. I'm not surprised at the mixed bag that is the new Foo Fighters record, so you can't call it disappointment just confirmation bias.

The Oh Sees - Orc

That record is crazy. It makes me feel stoned when I'm not. Pretty cool stuff though.

Just picked up the new one from Chicano Batman and, after just one listen, I'm thinking that it will probably make my top 10 of the year. Excellent, super cool band.

There is a lot of music out there! We can all only hear a small fraction of it. I guess that is what motivates us to keep being the music geeks that we are; why we keep searching out the new. And why we're here at this board (and others). Gotta learn about more!

i didn't love the new QOTSA nearly as much as I hoped i would. i really thought Like Clockwork was brilliant. this one, not so much.

I am not as big a fan of the new Oh Sees lineup as the previous one, but this record is quite good. he was great on Maron's podcast too.

IMO, 2017 was just an ok year in music -- the losses overshadowed the new releases.  Usually I have a hard time limiting my list to 10, but this year I struggled to come up with 10 worthy of inclusion.

1. Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile -- Lotta Sea Lice

2. Robyn Hitchcock

3. Steve Earle -- So You Wanna Be an Outlaw

4. Spoon -- Hot Thoughts

5. Hiss Golden Messenger -- Hallelujah Anyhow

6. Guided By Voices -- August By Cake

7. Ron Gallo -- Heavy Meta

8. Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit -- Nashville Sound

9. LCD Soundsystem --  American Dream

10. The Mountain Goats -- Goths

I also need to mention that I first discovered several incredible albums for the first time in 2017 even though they were released years ago including:

1. Flaming Lips -- Transmissions from the Satellite Heart

2. Vic Chesnutt --  Is the Actor Happy?

Transmissions is great but have you heard clouds taste metallic?!
