brownie Posted October 17, 2018 Share Posted October 17, 2018 yeah it's a bit of a drag. i did an interview w/ Howe Gelb some years back and we talked about Joey a bit at the end... i ended up not putting it in the published piece but should probably post the full version sometime... he basically said that Joey felt like he needed a go at the brass ring and took Howe's drummer along for the ride. i don't think Howe was bitter about it (though i'm sure he felt bitter at the time), just that they had different expectations of their place in the music industry. I think it’s pretty clear that Joey has been going for the brass ring. Ironically, I think he would be held in higher esteem in the music industry if he had stayed the course and stuck to what he’s really good at. Joey is a great soundscape artist, and many of the recordings he has had a hand in are among my favorite things in the world. But a world class songwriter/hitmaker, not so much.
