I was talking to a kid (probably ~20 years old) recently on his knowledge of vinyl, and he couldn't come up with an answer to the following question: "For double albums, why were sides 1 and 4 on opposite sides of one record, and sides 2 and 3 on opposite sides of the other?" ...but then I just felt old...

I didn't use those much, because my turntable had its own adapter for 45s They were good for use with a stack loader, though.

Haven't listened to this in a long time (several years, probably), and it's working much better for me now than it did the last time around. I've been pretty underwhelmed by R.E.M.'s output ever since they jumped to Warner Bros., but this one is a definite exception.

1. Bill Nahorodny 2. Eric Soderholm 3. Lamar Johnson 4. Jack Brohamer 5. Wayne Nordhagen

There's a joke I could make here about someone's inability to spell the word "retarded," but it's low-hanging fruit so I won't bother.

My bracket is full of red slashes, but somehow seven of my Elite Eight teams are still alive. There are no more perfect Yahoo brackets worldwide.
-
The outcome of the Tennessee-Virginia game took down three of the five remaining perfect brackets on Yahoo. Of the other two, one has Butler winning it all (ain't gonna happen) and the other has Oregon making the finals (also ain't gonna happen). So, looks like there won't be any perfection in the Yahoo ranks this year.

Nevada barely escaped Creighton. There's no way they're beating Memphis.* * - It would not be advisable to listen to anything I say about college basketball. If you've seen my bracket, you understand.

My bracket is a shambles, and Arkansas' collapse is but a small piece of that. I guess it probably helps to pay at least a little attention to college basketball during the regular season. My lone goal this year was to see Tommy Amaker fired, and that finally happened today. One rumor that was floating around earlier this week was that Michigan might go after Tom Crean. I'd be OK with that.

I was actually a bit underwhelmed by the Voxtrot on first listen, but maybe it was just too early on a Saturday morning.

Dion - "Runaround Sue" The Marathons - "Peanut Butter" Del Shannon - "Runaway" And honestly, you could do worse than just getting the American Graffiti soundtrack. Lots of great stuff on there. The Shadows of Knight version is OK, but you should get the original Them track.

Personally, I'm not comparing the Zune to an iPod. They both have serious issues with file compatibility. I'm saying that if you want a player that really works for you, don't buy either one. Also, I would merely note that you're one of the only people I've ever seen/heard who actually praises the Zune. It's been pretty universally derided.

I'm with you on your iPod comments, but what in the heck makes you think the Zune is any good? The best digital music players aren't made by Apple OR Microsoft. If you want a player that only plays what its manufacturer wants you to play, get an iPod or a Zune. If you want to be able to play whatever the fuck you want on your player, go elsewhere.

My first round sucked. It wasn't until Villanova lost late last night, though, that I lost a team that I had advancing past the second round -- so I guess there's still some hope for my bracket.
-
The reasons I would never buy a Zune are legion. clicky clicky again Unfortunately, the most damning things I've read about this piece of shit no longer seem to be on line. I can, however, quote a portion of the article Andy Ihnatko wrote for the Sun-Times (thanks to BoingBoing):

I finally got a chance to look at these ... great pics, Donna! Thanks so much for posting them. Melissa and I *almost* succeeded in completely avoiding your camera, but the one shot you did get of us (at Edie's party) I don't actually mind too much.

I've got one for you, Sir Paul: Always sign a pre-nup.

I'm a pretty depressing 11-5 after day one, but I didn't lose any teams who I had advancing past the second round, so the damage is pretty minimal so far. Even so, I'm hoping to do much better today. Duke going down is the highlight of the tournament for me each year. I'm ecstatic that they bit it in the opening round, though that probably means that the whole thing has already peaked for me this year.

Wow, that's definitely a pricey ticket for little ol' Wilco.

Yeah, the mud was intolerable. They had announced that no lawn chairs would be allowed, so we didn't bring any. Of course, everyone there had lawn chairs. We badly wanted to see MacGowan, but that side stage was running very late, and his set was already nearly two hours overdue when we finally decided that we were too miserable to hang around another minute ... so we left. We did see some good stuff that day, despite the prolonged misery -- Costello & Nieve, Van Morrison, the Saw Doctors, John Prine, and the highlight for me: Steve Earle with the Del McCoury Band. That day was, howe
