  1. My top three right now are: 1) Lola vs. Powerman and the Moneygoround 2) Village Green Preservation Society 3) Muswell Hillbillies I don't think you can go wrong with any of those three.
  2. I guess it's because of seeing I'm Not There and looking forward to Dark Knight that this has shaken me up more than I'd expect. A tragic loss.
  3. I've gone some time now without listening to much Wilco, but at this point I'd have to say it goes: AM BT ST YHF AGIB SBS
  4. I listen to LPs, CDs, and MP3s. None of them are the devil. It's the artists/producers that can kill a record by having no dynamics before anyone has a chance to compress it themselves. Along with auto-tuning and piecing edits together every two seconds, even if they have a good song they've recorded nothing remarkable. Luckily most good bands today get wise to this.
  5. Their performance is not delicate, but I've heard them totally nail a tune (and totally not nail one) even with the backing tracks. You might not be able to see it through the confetti but (from both times I've seen them), Steven can kick some ass live, hearing the drums live is always worth it too, and I don't know how Michael holds up but I could sure feel the bass. Wayne's voice is usually shot to begin with, but I suppose that's why he's in charge of the spectacle. Just wanted to say that they're not just playing a CD and throwing balloons at the audience to blind them from cardboard amps
  6. if i had and knew how to use photoshop, i'd replace George with the panda.
  7. I've just started an account. I'm making a queue right now, how exciting.
  8. i'd look for online only stuff, or even EPs in general. some 'iTunes Originals' are pretty good too.
  9. no musicianship, really. good melodies though. i think it's great, but it seems like one exercise done over several times with varying degrees of success. it's probably in my top 10 or 20 (even though i can't decide on a top 5 ). i really like it, but i wonder if its popularity at the top of critic's lists is inflated by its novelty.
  10. Suprises: Animal Collective & Fiery Furnaces both caught up with me this year. From what I heard prior, I was ready to go about my life without listening to either band, but both new albums made something click and i'm happy they did. Disappointments: The White Stripes. I second whoever disliked the production. It seemed Jack had it right all along about how they should record, the quicker the better. the songs here are dressed up rather than fully realized. I own all their records but couldn't buy this one, even with one of their best cover photos.
  11. I'm Not There Can't say that I understood half of it, but I liked a lot of it.
  12. bump. i completed my mix awhile ago, but it's seemingly impossible to upload it wirelessy where i am. but thankfully this has allowed me to notice two tracks that were poorly imported to iTunes and sound warbly. when i get a wired connection i will post my hopefully nonwarbly sounding mix.
  13. The Fresh Prince lost me with 'I, Robot'. There wasn't even a rap over the credits if I remember correctly.
  14. This may sound drug-induced but whoa, that's a lot of O's.
  15. I liked: Knocked Up No Country For Old Men The Darjeeling Limited The Bourne Ultimatum Hot Fuzz* I'm Not There** Looking forward to see: Juno Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten* Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem Blockbusters I saw that left me feeling all empty inside: Spiderman 3 Pirates of the Carribean 3 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Transformers (Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem) *edited after being reminded by other posts **edited after seeing the movie
  16. I was at the Boston show last year where Shane took a spill.
  17. how embarassing, i'm the only voter who cooks it more than "medium rare".
  18. If we could ever agree what that level is, I would say Jeff Tweedy's written a few, and maybe a few better. It's a whole different game now anyway. Nobody's going to be better than The Beatles at being The Beatles.
  19. you list consistency, innovation, originality, and all around craft but then you list sales figures, which descend with the ranking. are these bands all tied for those four criteria? does Floyd beat out Zep because somebody scratched their record and had to buy a new one?
  20. Yeah, but I don't think so. U2's heyday is so 20th century. The 'best band' is too problematic to even really argue over this, but in the distant future, Radiohead will be remembered as a turn of the century band, while U2's past couple albums + anything else will only be known to U2 fans, U2 historically residing in the 80s/90s. Unless they release something earth-shaking, in which case I will eat my hat. This, of course, assumes that someone still cares about rock bands in the distant future.
  21. Sinatra got guard duty for taking too long to get dressed. I think that was the last thing I saw, got past the famous beach scene anyway. Hopefully it will make the rounds again on TV, but I'm getting Netflix soon anyway. Whichever comes first.
