an album might leave someone cold, a mix gives the listener several angles on the band's work. if they find they like certain songs better than others, they can start off with the albums those songs came from. also, a mix cd is a friendly gesture and an exchange of ideas about music. it's very simple to lend them a flashdrive with every Wilco album on it. but that takes the personality out of it, and it's also illegal.

I've mentioned this a few times before, but All Smile's "Ten Readings of a Warning" is a very recent and very good home-recorded album.
