  1. I'm a newbie parent (my daughter is 21 months old), but my background in psychology and counselling has taught me the importance of attachment and emotional literacy. Lately, I've been trying to teach my daughter to name her feelings (e.g., "You feel mad because the dog ate your cookie.") and this seems to calm her down when she's on the verge of a tantrum. I also encourage her to pick her stuffed animals up when they fall on the floor and ask if they're okay. (I know this may seem silly, but it's a start.) When she's older, I'll try to expose her to those who are less fortunate by becoming
  2. This is the land of Twin Peaks* and the X-Files, after all. * Okay, that was set in WA, but it's still in the neighbourhood.
  3. Happy birthday! :monkey I got you one of these.
  4. I've noticed conflicting reports about this. Hmm...

  7. Stephen Colbert licenses the Hockey Night in Canada Theme
  8. Reckoning is my favourite album, but my favourite song (Fall On Me) is on Lifes Rich Pageant. I've discovered a lot of amazing music over the years by listening to whatever Peter Buck was raving about in interviews. The guy has great taste.
  9. No love for Spinal Tap? Come on! I'm also a big fan of Bruce McDonald's rock & roll road trilogy: Roadkill, Highway 61, and Hard Core Logo.
  10. Exactly. Canada has more oil reserves than Iraq and we are the largest supplier of oil to the US.
  11. Thanks, Lou. Things might be a little easier for us north of the border, but I do remember that the laws in my Province changed (to make it harder) a few years ago. I think we only needed 51% of employees to sign union cards to be certified. Now, I think a majority vote is required as well. I was with the BC Government and Service Employees' Union when I worked at a non-profit community services agency. Now, I belong to an independent union made up of faculty and staff at a public post-secondary institution. (Some of our most active members teach in the School of Business! haha)
  12. Music can change the world, in ways that are both personal and profound. A few years ago, when I was organizing my workplace (we were successful!), one of the first things I did was make a mix tape of songs that would inspire us to keep going when the going got tough. I played it in my car on the way to and from work every day. I wore a union button on my coat. I held meetings at my home (so that management couldn't "crash" them). It was one of the most exciting times in my life. A real "peak experience" as the humanistic psychologists used to say.
  13. Very sad news. I was fortunate enough to see him perform at the Vancouver Folk Festival a few years ago. R.I.P.
  14. Amazing setlist tonight in Vancouver! A few highlights: Gardening At Night West Of The Fields Second Guessing Time After Time (Annelise) Disturbance At The Heron House Ignoreland (live debut) Sweetness Follows Country Feedback (spontaneous and unrehearsed, according to Michael) They also did a gorgeous acoustic version of Let Me In.
  15. I agree. It's a gem. ... I also really love Side With The Seeds. SBS is comfort food for the soul.
  16. Pemberton Festival I'm not that interested in the line-up, but the location is stunning! What are some of your favourite summer concert venues?
  17. I'm going to see them at Deer Lake Park (it's GA ) on Friday. It's only 15 minutes from my house and the weather should be nice, so hey, why not?
  18. Okay, I'll admit it. I'm excited. In the end, it's Neil's vision... his trip, not ours. This comment on Thrasher's Wheat kinda sums up my feelings now.
