  1. Saw Rachel Getting Married yesterday, it was superb, excellent story, great performances, and excellent music as well-- Robyn Hitchcock and Fab Five Freddy make guest appearances. Highly recommended, one of the best I've seen this year. --Mike
  2. I voted absentee, I am still registered and a legal citizen of West (by God) Virginia, though I am living in Minnesota. I was one of the twenty or so people in Wva. that voted for Obama in the primary, and the choice was pretty easy for me. --Mike
  3. I liked what I saw from them in the first half (and by liked I mean hated as I was passionately rooting for the other team). They happened to get West Virginia in the game where WVU got their shit together and figured out to run their offense. Auburn is still a pretty solid team-- they lost three games by ten points-- I know the season's been a bit of a bust, but I have a feeling they'll either upset Georgia or Bama and finish either 8-5 or 9-4 after the bowl game. Meanwhile, for the first time all year I feel pretty good after a Mountaineer game. If we can keep Pat White healthy this team a
  4. . I thought I was the only one who ever spelled that way. --Mike
  5. Pretty amazing. There's really not a built in safety net for the viewer this time around-- in Adaptation we obviously know no matter how crazy it gets he's going to finish the movie, in Eternal Sunshine it's all in Jim Carrey's head the whole time. There's a lot of strange stuff in Synecdoche, New York that just happens without being explained. It's a pretty dense, challenging film, that's devastating, yet hopeful through out. It's his biggest skullfuck yet. I feel like I need to see it a few more times to get it, but I highly recommend checking it out in a few weeks when it comes out. --Mi
  6. You're all right. I can get along with almost pretty much anyone who likes Wilco and Wes Anderson. My hatred of the Vikings stems back to the Randy Moss days, I grew up rooting against them and even though a.) he's long gone and b.) I now live in the Twin Cities, I just can't quite come around to the men in purple. It's nothing personal. --Mike
  7. This among many others at the great Chicago Film Festival (where I spent my fall break last weekend). --Mike
  8. Anyone who likes Wilco, hates the Vikings and is voting for Obama is okay in my book. Welcome to the board. --Mike
  9. I think Tried and True, the original Summerteeth (though I love the song Summerteeth), earns that distinction for me, but this is certainly up or down there. --Mike
  10. Yeah, I didn't like that one at all. Wilco has a history of being a great B-sides band, but this song is not one of them. --Mike
  11. I have always considered Pieholden to be one of the more popular songs here, but I tend to remember a lot of things that happen on this board as sweeping gross generalizations. For instance awhile back someone was talking about the unreleased song Let's Fight, and I remembered the song getting a pretty tepid reaction here. But when I checked the archives, there were only two posters who were complaining about it. So, my memory regarding what's posted here kind of sucks. Consider me the exact opposite of A-Man in that regard. Pieholden is certainly worth the discussion though. I love it, i
  12. I have only listened to it on vinyl a couple of times. It's just not a record I have felt compelled to listen to that much in the last year or so. I started buying vinyl last year once I finally got a decent turn table. I am starting to prefer it, though I still like CD's a lot for the car stereo where I do most of my listening. --Mike
  13. Essox would be campaigning for the election of Roger Waters as president, so it can't be him. --Mike
  14. I was a little bummed to see one of my favorite Pavement gems, Spiral's "For Sale, The Preston School of Industry" wound up getting left off. They recorded it for a radio station in the Netherlands, and the station owns the only version they recorded and wanted too much cash for it. The KCRW session is golden though, hopefully they'll keep in Stephen's banter with the host. This is a pretty underrated album. All five Pavement albums are great in their own way, the early ones are a little better, but never really put out a bad album. I didn't do the buy early, buy now either, but will certainly

  16. Some thoughts from the weekend. Michigan struggles this year are reminding me of Rodriguez's first year at WVU. They were even worse than UM this year trust me. I am really hoping this is the beginning of the end of the "spread offense" craze, because I am really getting tired of these teams going into shotgun on third and one and losing two yards on a carry up the middle. Start buying stock in Penn State. If they can knock off Ohio State in Columbus and avoid their annual stinker against Michigan, this team has the best shot at going undefeated of anyone in the top five. Texas looks great,
  17. A friend of mine described Breakfast at Tiffany's as her comfort movie, something she could watch all the time no matter what and feel better. I think Darjeeling might be mine at least it's been this year. Something about the combination of India, a familial dynamic which I am pretty familiar with, and a killer soundtrack does it for me each time out. --Mike
  18. Obama is leading in West Virginia, according to a recent poll. Poll shows Obama ahead of McCain in W.Va.. The Gazette is often accused of having a liberal bias, and hiring Wilco message geeks to work in their sports department (see: mpolak21). Anyway, it's only worth five points, but symbolically after getting crushed by Hillary in the primary (remember that lady that said "we're tired of that Hussein" on The Daily Show, that's right my state) if he could pull it out it would look awfully good. I voted absentee yesterday. I didn't feel nearly as much trepidation as I did with Kerry in 0
  19. Wonderful, wonderful book. I can't recommend it highly enough, and half of the sci-fi and comic book references flew right over my head. Certainly worth checking out. I'll keep an eye on this thread. --Mike
  20. I love the bio and their analysis of Summerteeth: Anyone post on their original message board? --Mike
  21. There were only two who people listed it on their list of Wilco songs they can't stand. It seemed to be a bigger deal than it actually was because about five people commented "how could anyone not like Pieholden Suite" or something along those lines. It's probably one of the more popular songs in their catalog among diehards, it's always on people's wishlists for webcasts. And for good reason. --Mike
  22. . Great pick. I love almost all of his early run of albums. Musically after the mid seventies there's not a whole lot I'm excited about, but the first several albums are all solid. --Mike
  23. That one is on A Ghost is Born. There are some really great live versions of it from 02 and 03 and the one from the residency is great also. --Mike
