  1. I guess I don't really have any objectively great ones, and none of my shows compare to the ones above, but here are some shows that were cool for me: Bob Dylan, MSG November 2002 (?) -- the show in NYC soon after George Harrison had passed away. Bob dedicate the encore to George and played Something. Elvis Costello and the Brodsky Quartet, Town Hall (1993 or 1994?) -- I think Elvis only played a couple of shows after the Juliet Letters came out. This was one of them and was a perfect night. Most folks dont like the Juliet Letters but I always thought it was a beautiful album. Squeeze
  2. I dont remember where I heard it or read it, and far be it from me to doubt the accuracy of solace's information, but when I bought my tix to see them in NYC in a couple of weeks, I was very much under the impression that Dan would be there. That was why I bought the tix. solace, are you sure he won't be there? I can look around to see where I heard that he would be... I know it is incredibly rare for him to be playing with them, but that was why I bought the tix.
  3. I would also like to point out that, for the record, it is impossible to have more than one favorite.
  4. I saw yo la tengo this past weekend as part of the Freewheelin Yo La Tengo tour. It's sort of set up as a Storytellers type gig where they talk and play. Anyway, they were asked who their biggest musical influences were and Ira Kaplan without missing a beat said that Ray Davies and the Kinks were the biggest musical influence in his life. Then they played This Man He Weeps Tonight. A cool moment for sure. Nothing beats the kinks. Or going to see a band that you love tipping their cap to another band you love. I'd bring Arthur with me if I could only take 5 albums to a desert island.
  5. Come on cryptique. You should know my sarcasm better by now. I expect more from you. I did the same thing in the other Beatles poll.
  6. I would love to say George too, but I cannot. As much as I like ATMP, George just never wrote songs like Jealous Guy, Watching the Wheels, Instant Karma, Imagine, Mother, etc. It's really not even close. The correct answer is John.
  7. I was at the Jets/Giants game on Sunday and before the game started the PA announcer said that today's game time temperature is brought to you by Keyspan. That amused me. I turned to my wife and said, I thought that was god's gig?
  8. Of course they would. But stop changing the subject!! This is about the Yankees losing, not the Mets. You had your chance. Now it's mine. Allllllllll mine.
  9. I think you meant to say: 26 World Championships baby!!!! EDIT: come on. Yanks fans openly and vocally rooted for a mets collapse and got it. Yankee fans got plenty of licks in. And then the Yanks ended up playing a whopping 4 games more than the Mets. I think some good natured chuckling is in order.

    poor places

Yeah, I think that's in there too. But I saw it as more of a personal thing (than a western thing). An acknowledgement that as the world gets bigger and crazier, the chasm gets bigger and we get separated more and more from each other. To the point that we don't care about the pain and suffering of others far away anymore. And we continue to struggle with the person lying next to us in bed. Same chasm. Great great tune. Just my thoughts of course.

I think it's a song about the ongoing struggle to communicate and make connections with one another literally and figuratively. And how the struggle intensifies as the world gets bigger and crazier and we stay small. A chasm or a sea between us. I fear that the song is about what is ultimately a doomed struggle, but I think that there's hope in there somewhere. I think it's jeff's best song and its the song that ties everything together for me on the album.
  12. Gotcha. Fair points. I will try to go find the Letterman or Leno clip. Someone should start up a thread dedicated specifically to late night tv performances/youtube. Not it.
  13. I can't believe how many people got this wrong.
  14. Nah, I'm not so sure. I mean, IMO, of course. I was pretty underwhelmed with the live performances of the new tunes when I saw them in austin a few weeks back. So, considering that, and the fact that most bands underperform on late night TV (that's a tough gig), I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't think it was the best performance ever, but all things considered, I thought they did a good job. Maybe my expectations were lower. I agree that Arcade fire were quite good on SNL, and that the Shins were quite bad on SNL. Didn't see Kanye.
  15. tough crowd. I liked it. Some good energy and lots of fun.
  16. Nick Lowe was on Jimmy Kimmel Live the other night... Performed I Trained Her To Love Me and PL & U. Check it out here: http://abc.go.com/primetime/jimmykimmel/garage/index.html
