  1. Check out this review in the Village Voice on the recent NYC Decemberists show. I have rarely seen such a critical review. Ouch. http://www.villagevoice.com/music/0646,ott,75004,22.html Next, scroll down and read the comments to the article where Colin Meloy's girlfriend posts a response and the author of the article comes back at her. Yikes!! If I could figure out how to post all of this in here I would... I was at this show and I have to say (sorry to say it) this was the worst Decemberists show I have seen -- I have seen 4 total. The Decemberists act is getting a little stale fo
  2. I am sorry, but it does matter that this 50 mil doesnt go against the salary cap. If this moeny doesnt go against the cap, the 50 mil should be viewed as any other investment that a baseball team or any other company for that matter, makes in itself. R&D if you will. If the Sox think that getting this guy will open the Japanese markets for them, and that sales in merchandise in Japan will quadruple, and that this will bring in money, no one here can even offer an opinion as to whether those forecasts, projections, etc. are worth it. Even if the guy becomes a fairly reliable #2 starter
  3. These are the first ten albums that popped into my head. Damn you Sir S!!!! Great idea, but this killed me: 1. Radio Cure - YHF (Wilco) 2. Rainy Day WOmen - Blonde on Blonde (Dylan) 3. You're A Big Girl Now - Blood on the Tracks (Dylan) 4. Maxwell's Silver Hammer - Abbey Road (Beatles) 5. She's Bought a Hat Like Princess Marina - Arthur (Kinks) 6. The Beat - This Year's Model (Elvis Costello) 7. Pet Sounds - Pet Sounds (Beach Boys) 8. The Fool - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (NMH) 9. Soul Survivor - Exile (Stones) 10. So Says I - Chutes Too Narrow (The Shins) 1, 3, 6, 7, 9 and 10 literal
  4. Done! Shoulda been up for album of the year.
  5. Thank you to everyone in this chain. I checked out Roots and Crowns as a result of this chain and fell in love with it. Then, perfect timing, went to their shows in NYC and Brooklyn on Thurs/Fri last week. Can't get enough of the Califone now. Such great stuff... Thanks again peeps.
  6. Without doubt. Someday soon I hope to be doing exactly what you are doing and when that happens I will be going to Matt Umanov's and Rudy's, in that order, if I am looking at an electric. Reverse the order if you are looking for an acoustic.
  7. Yes. Thanks. And I agree that the video would be much cooler if Johnny Cash were singing the song to the people in the video... ... and I also agree that he probably isnt singing the song to the people in that video. As a result, I stand by my initial reaction: that video is annoying to me.
  8. I have always had good experiences at Matt Umanov, 30th Street Guitars and Rudy's especially. Things are more hit or miss at Manny's, Chelsea Guitars and Ludlow. At least in my experience. If I had 3 stores to go to they would be Matt Umanov, 30th Street and Rudy's. In that order. 30th street has lots of vintage and used stuff and is a pretty cool place but may not be worth the trip if you are looking for new stuff.
  9. I will echo everything said above, and also suggest Chelsea Guitars on 23rd street. As far as the stores on 48th street go, its sad to say it, but they are mere shadows of their former selves. Rudy's is really the only one worth your time. Manny's, an institution in the city, was bought by Sam Ash awhile back and is now a dump like all other Sam Ash's. The one saving grace for Manny's is the autographed photos that line the walls of the store. Jimi, the Beatles, etc. Really pretty cool. My favorite shop, and where I have bought most of my gear, is Matt Umanov on Bleecker Street. Its a
  10. If I were the GM of a small market team with a reasonably small budget with no chance of landing top free agents, I would be sure to have my minions leak to the press that we are going after talent like Bonds and/or Zito. This way, when we dont get those players to sign with us we can tell our fans: 1. Wow, we just can't compete with the Yanks/Sox when it comes to money; 2. But dammit, we tried. 3. See how hard we are working to keep you happy as fans? 4. Please buy more tickets. I am not saying that this is what the Marlins are doing with the Bonds thing, but its what I would do. And I
  11. Damn. Thats exactly what I thought the last time I saw him last year in NYC. And I retired then too. But then Modern Times came out, and I got the bug and got tix. I had forgotten how I felt the last go-round. Oh well. I hope I dont feel this way again after the show I see on Monday... On an unrelated note, I saw an article that Toad's PLace was forced to close for 3 months recently for selling alcohol to minors. $90,000 fine too. Yowsahs.
  12. I have no idea what you are talking about, but I just thought the video was annoying. Woody Harrelson? Chris Rock? Justin Timberlake? Sheryl Crow? 4 people that happen to annoy me.
  13. Hideki Irabu anyone? I'm just sayin'. Spending $98 million on a pitcher that has never thrown a major league pitch is a huge gamble. I dont care what the projections say. And of course, this is the problem with baseball -- most teams can probably afford this guy if they want him badly enough, but few teams can afford to make a mistake with this guy without being set back for the next 5 years. And those teams, the Yanks, Sox, Mets, etc. are the only teams in the running. Oh well. Broken record, I know.
  14. Just bought my tix for 11/20 in NYC!!! A newly added show at a small theater in NYC. I think this is where the Opera plays? Anyone know anythign about it? I am so excited. Got through online and got tix in the last row of the orchestra. $150/ticket. So I eat PBJ for the next two months. Who cares?!?!! Today is the day I'm gonna grab my trombone and blow....
  15. Ugh. RIP Ed. You will be missed. As an aside, I thought his interview with Dylan on 60 Minutes when Chronicles came out was awesome.
  16. If froggie gets it to SirS and SirS gets it to me, then your wishes shall be granted.
  17. I suppose the reason that I keep flip-flopping on this is that its a very fine line. I know Repubs aren't the more moral party. What bugs me is that I have to listen to them tell me over and over again that they are and that they stand for family values, etc. thereby implying that Dems don't. So when one (or many) of the Repubs are shown to be croooks/cheaters/hypocrites/etc., its not so much that I am criticizing them for failing to live up to a standard that I knew was fictional all along. I am just happy that they are being exposed as the hypocrites that I knew they were all along. Ag
  18. I always thought Graham Parker was an elvis wannabe -- and that this explained the similarities in the first few albums. Not that Parker wasn't wildly talented, just that he was trying to ride on some EC coattails.
  19. I love both of you and will send it to anyone that wants it from me. Toad's Place!!
  20. No, it won't make a difference. But I feel better today. And its a moral victory (no pun intended).
  21. Damn you people. Each new post in this discussion re-convinces me that the other side of this argument is right. Now I agree with El El again.
