  1. I think that a lot of people who are responsible for the worst, biggest, chunk of this disaster will be the last to feel its sting. That cruel irony aside I think a lot of what put the U.S. in its current economic situation is an attitude that transcends class or political affiliation. It is so true that it sounds trite: short sighted -ness, buy now/pay later, any growth is good growth etc. From naive people buying explode-able mortgages to greedy fat cats trading them. I mean shit, do you think Detroit would have taken a dump if investors didn't have so much control over corporations? E
  2. I gave this movie a mixed review on my silly little blog when it was in theaters. Seeing it again months later I felt a little more affection for it. The thing is with this movie (maybe all Anderson movies) if you can't emotionally relate to some of the characters he still gets you 80% of the way to awesome with his production design alone (so ornate and distinctive). That said, the social psychology of the brothers, mother etc. felt more interesting to me the second time. We'll see how "The Fantastic Mr. Fox" turns out.
  3. You've obviously never made an album. Unless you're a militant studio engineer whose tastes are dictated by a methodical work flow- 90% of your favorite albums are overdubbed a lot. There are some wonderful albums recorded mostly live, but to suggest that there is any lack of amazing albums with lots of overdubs would be almost like ignoring the last forty years of popular music.
  4. Man! That article did nothing but give me more questions (as intended?). They listed like eight songs. Wilco has historically recorded a half a dozen songs more than they need for an album. I wonder if they did that this time, or if they recorded 12 and they're releasing 12 kind of story. I do know that I'm disappointed that TJ Doherty isn't taking a greater role in engineering the album. I think he's just been doing overdubs at the Loft, but didn't make it to NZ. Meanwhile did they start off in New Zealand like this: "Okay, band meeting. First thing: attendance. Jiff?" "Present
  5. What is the substance of this Wilco as activists conversation? Is it the Record Store Day thing, or the review of the film that discusses its view of a changing American landscape and culture? As far as I'm concerned having something released exclusively at indie stores on a special day for them isn't all that political. It's just awesome. Going to the record store is awesome, and I will have a special reason to do it that day. As far as the larger view of "Ashes" as it was described in the review- if you can't hang with meditations on the meaning(s) of America and how it changes then y
  6. This needs to be owned by me on vinyl. Does that happen?
  7. I think "Fever" is one of the most original sounding recordings I've heard in ages.
  8. What's this? A new piece of Wilco media comes out and I don't even feel tempted to buy it. I'm not the dork I thought I was.
  9. I've heard it 1.5 times and I gotta say it is gorgeous. That woman is a genius. Some of the sonic territory she's treading is so bold. I won't stack it up to her other stuff (I felt like Fox Confessor continued to reveal more to me a year down the road) but I will say that it is superb. I also agree that it is fairly short, and a little sleepy. But it is also amazing.
  10. I probably don't need to tell you, but share your reactions after you've digested the thing. We're all very excited to hear how it came out.
  11. Yes Blue Ray..... Meanwhile, any of you Chicago locals going to the premier next month?
  12. I realized you lived in Colorado, I thought I might even check out your show. Then I realized it's not in Denver. Hit me up if you guys ever want cheap studio time in Denver.
  13. I think many great albums have, but I don't think all great albums have intense conflict. I suppose any creative venture is bound to have some kind of conflict, but you seem to be pointing towards the dramatic kind. There are some examples of another type of great album: Highway 61 Revisited Kind of Blue the Crane WIfe Grace the Argument This Year's Model Revolver I'm not an expert on all of these, I might be dead wrong on a couple, but what I'm getting at are those great albums made by highly capable musicians with a camaraderie found by striving to make great art. I would like to thin
  14. The thing about Nels is you can't really get a good picture of his musical personality (which is way diverse) by looking at his work on SBS. A lot of what he does on that album is in response to the material that was brought to him. If you ever listen to anything start with the Nels Cline Singers, either Draw Breath, or the Giant Pin. It was very interesting for me to hear Nels Cline as a chord player instead of a lead player. He can be very minimal and moody. He can also be a noise maker, he can make a YHF array of noise just with a guitar and effects. Maybe you still won't like it, bu
  15. I think the mistake with SBS is to think that just because it is a fairly relaxed listen (compared to AGIB, YHF) doesn't mean it wasn't a challenge to the band. Those smooth songs have super intricate arrangements with six performers and it was recorded live with everyone in one room. I think it must have been extremely challenging. They definitely could not have achieved it with that level of grace in a former incarnation. I also think that Tweedy is always challenging himself. I saw a short interview somewhere on Paste where he was talking about how none of the bands previous albums ma
  16. Man, sometimes I think Brendan Canty might be one of the coolest dudes alive. It would be one thing just to play drums in Fugazi. Most people can't compete with that. But then he adds his efforts with Trixie films and Burn to Shine. The guy is like the sweetest curator/producer ever.
  17. Re: no one can accurately guess what the album will sound like. The only thing we do know is one Wilco album has never sounded all that much like its predecessor.
  18. Let me take this one: if I liked Blu Ray, and had never heard Wilco, I would by their Blu Ray movie so I would hear them and stop being such a freaking loser. The same applies to any other format they have releases on. High five?
  19. But HD tv looks like a DVD. Blu Ray's merits are only visible to those with massive and expensive tv sets, and to them the improvement is a mere subtlety. At least that's what a specialist on NPR told me. I don't mean to be a Luddite, but come on.... 24-bit cd's, blu ray dvds? Some of these new formats seem like little more than cash cows to me. Excuse the rant. Yeah Wilco, put out a new DVD! Wooh!
  20. The bass playing shines on vinyl in a way the cd didn't capture. It's a great album to listen to on vinyl if you don't mind the work of changing for the four sides it spans.
  21. Awesome. That was an interesting twist on "Monday" made me feel better that it is 1/13th of the setlist. I think I see now what they meant about getting the 'feeling' of a live show in. Way to go Brendan Canty!
  22. I actually prefer this. 13 songs of live rockin is good enough. I always find the 'behind the scenes' material from music documentaries to be more interesting. Maybe if I hadn't seen the band four times live my attitude might be different.
