  1. I thought We All Belong had a bit more staying power than Fate. They are both instantaneously delightful listens.
  2. I think, (maybe hope) with all the work the Burn to Shine crew did on the spring tours that they're sitting on it in order to add to it. What if they have been filming all the recording sessions that have been going on this month and will film so more shows to do a major Wilco DVD that has live performances, studio footage, and docu stuff. Man. That should happen. I hope it's happening. Someone call Brendan Canty and ask him.
  3. Wow that's not an obvious one. Do you even like music? How about side one track one of Beethoven's fifth symphony?
  4. But look at what kind of society the federal government has to manage now. There are logistic elements that are much more complex. There are many theoretical forms of government that can work effectively over a population of a certain size. Anarchism, or more simply a total egalitarian system can work pretty well in a band of a couple dozen people living together. It breaks down once the population increases, and they are exchanging money and so on. I don't mean to say that Libertarianism is as extreme as anarchism, it is just an example.
  5. I find the Libertarian agenda to be nothing more than a more fair and even-handed application of Reagan-nomics. Preserving peoples freedom and reducing the size of the government significantly sounds just fine. But, as with Libertarian's more unrealistic and aggressive cousin (the Anarchist) I think the potential for very negative effects is there.

  7. This goes back to how ignorant and callous Palin was when she challenged Biden's assertion that tax paying is patriotic. Of course it is.
  8. Yes I-Pod. No bucket. If you drive a car..... if you live in a house with a stereo system and want to hear your I-pod in those places you can hook it up to both after investing some twenty odd dollars on cables. Unless you have no tape deck in your car. Then it's more expensive. But not as expensive as those damn bucket stealers. Now if you're at a bar/grill situation I find the bucket adds a festive mood to beer drinking.
  9. And the great storytellers of our neighborhoods. The ones who approach and say "Scuze me can I axe you a question? My brother in law left my car outta gas with my kids in Lafayette and I just need like 13 dollers to find my shoes for the bus and save my kids....."
  10. Wait, Colbert has never had live music performances on his show has he?
  11. Tina Fey makes Sarah Palin seem sexier than she is.
  12. I delivered my mail in ballott by hand today. Felt really good. I didn't walk away until I saw it placed in the locked box. Just feels important. My girlfriend's dad says he copied his mail-in ballot so he can frame it and show his grandkids after the election. History.
  13. New Deerhoof and Sterolab albums are both superb. I love when new music is good!
  14. I have yet to see a single B-Side from Wilco that would have improved an album, or fit well into the sequence. I find Tweedy has earned my trust while sequencing albums. I do enjoy some of their B-Sides quite a bit, but Glad It's Over is forgettable. I'm more of a High Heat, Panthers, Cars Can't Escape, Kicking TV fan.
  15. Holy crap. Watch the middle segment where they go to Wasilla to check out Palin's home town. He interviews the mayor to see how the position trains VP's. Hilarious! http://www.thedailyshow.com/full-episodes/...pisodeId=188632
  16. Oh, absolutely. In that sense it is not realized. What I was referring to is the meager efforts on the Bush administrations part to start using civilian experts and advisers to deal with the communities the army was encountering. Psychologists, cultural anthropologists. I read an interesting article about it in the Sept issue of Harper's. This has been the biggest I told you so in foreign policy I've ever laid claim to. The minute the Iraqi government fell and civilian resistance became apparent I said "They're gonna need anthropologists to sort this out, not just M16's." Unfortunate
  17. This is the same reason the 'win' rhetoric in Iraq is as hollow as a balloon. Winning is a strange concept when your goals are so abstract. You don't 'win' when your goal is to stabilize a country and its people. That's not a football game. They won at killing some people, defeating Sadam and crushing an organized military. But we can't 'win' at an applied anthropology project. We just have to decide what is the most effective and ethical course of action. It's just such a shame that the Bush administration only realized a year and a half ago you don't understand the motivations of a f
  18. It is amazing to me; so many people have been swayed by this one issue and their candidate has been helpless to deliver the goods (thankfully in my eyes). It's incredible to me the lengths people will go to, to protest abortion itself, without ever lifting a finger to support programs/education that could stop the need for abortion. The religious-conservative family planning model has been a historic force in increasing poverty. At least most Catholics now have made themselves comfortable with birth control.
  19. I'm sure my agenda is completely obscured by my non-partisan fair and accurate reporting.
  20. Shh, don't say that yet. Too soon. No jinx allowed. I'll give you a interweb high five when it's for real.
  21. Are most of these people willfully ignorant, or are they naive and being manipulated?
  22. From Fivethiryeight.com: "So a canvasser goes to a woman's door in Washington, Pennsylvania. Knocks. Woman answers. Knocker asks who she's planning to vote for. She isn't sure, has to ask her husband who she's voting for. Husband is off in another room watching some game. Canvasser hears him yell back, "We're votin' for the n***er!" Woman turns back to canvasser, and says brightly and matter of factly: "We're voting for the n***er." "
  23. That is clean and cutting analysis. About every second or third page someone else ups the critical thinking anti. These forums have been great.
  24. If everyone would have followed Hillary's work in the 90's and been had a little more backbone on standing up to lobbyists we wouldn't have the wreck of a health care system we have right now. Clinton did more to try to fix health care than anyone yet, and unfortunately this country was a little too backwards to get on board at that point.
