  1. Very cool picture, bjorn. I love those old baseball photos. I did a workshop for a few weekends last fall where we were taught how to navigate the Library of Congress web site for educational purposes and for a few of my reference 'assignments" I hit up the baseball section. Tons of great photos that have rarely seen the light of day outside the archives in the LOC. I've got a computer key to access that stuff at any time I need to take fuller advantage of.
  2. Here's a "feel-good" story I don't recall hearing about last October. Mike Coolbaugh was a coach for the Rockies' AA minor-league team in Tulsa and died after taking a line-drive to the head last fall. The Rockies gave his widow a full share of the WS money: http://www.denverpost.com/rockies/ci_8347816
  3. I think it's lame that they cancel a concert to do two songs on t.v. They should have asked to reschedule the SNL slot, imo. Maybe that's not possible and/or maybe they did try, I don't know. At least the concert is rescheduled, though.
  4. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has been based in CO since 2-3 years into their inception (over 40 years ago). Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys) is from Boulder. Rose Hill Drive is from Boulder. Tony Furtado cut his nut in the Boulder area. Big Head Todd & the Monsters are from Boulder. Jerry Joseph got his start in Boulder with the excellent band Little Women. He now fronts another excellent band, Jerry Joseph and the Jackmormons. Drag the River is from Fort Collins Hot Rize still plays, but Pete Wernick is a master on his own with his band, too (Pete Wernick's Live Five w/ wife Joan). He's a Bronx
  5. Not for nothing but the Dead were certainly "serious musicians" as well. I'm not sure what band-member drug usage/non-usage has to do with it. I can understand not wanting to hit shows (I guess) because of some bone-heads in the crowd though.
  6. Greg Brown and his daughter Pieta Brown. Greg's married to Iris Dement, too. David Zollo The above may not be household names, but Greg Brown's been around for awhile and is well known and respected on the Folk circuit. Zollo is a fantastic 30-something musician that also runs a record label in Iowa (Brown's on it). Tommy Bolin is from Iowa, as well.
  7. My original home state, too. NRBQ shows were always a blast. Don't forget that Michael Bolton was born in CT, too. New Haven. Michael Bolton.
  8. Or some of those Paul McCartney tunes. I think of those as just decent (maybe a little weak) Pop tunes.
  9. "Islands in the Stream," Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers
  10. I read this in college for a History class based around the Viet Nam "conflict" right around the time Platoon first came out. Well written and the best account of the war I've read.
  11. I'll pick up The Things They Carried on Saturday. I just finished this on recommendation from Donna. I thought it started off slow and drab (the writing, despite the content) but I really kind of connected with it about half-way through and came to quite like her style by the end: Currently reading this. Certainly not a challenging or even provocative read and a bunch of the stories have been told elsewhere and better: I'm still waiting on Amazon to ship HST's last book. The shiiping date was originally Fe. 5. I assume it's not out yet.
  12. Trot was fun to watch and a good guy to root for. 14. C'mon, when else will we ever get a chance to hear this live?
  15. Interference and/or static with the drone. Now that's not right!
  16. As far as drone goes, not too drone-y.
