  1. the ironic thing about the "granny shit" thing - John did those type of songs several times on his solo albums. i take it he means the kind of Tin Pan Alley/vaudeville flavored stuff.
  2. you mean you only like those two Paul songs on the entire album? i love Honey Pie, Helter Skelter, Mother Nature's Son, Rocky Racoon
  3. wasting no time - myspace announcement: END TIMES are coming: New EELS album due January 19: The eighth EELS studio album, entitled END TIMES, will be released January 19, 2010. Stay tuned to www.EELStheband.com for album info as it comes in.
  4. i don't think it has anything to do with it. i knew it was great and was pretty sure they'd agree as well. there are several artists they don't praise - Richard Swift for one - that I know are great. it's nice when a popular website backs it though. it will help spread the word of the album no doubt. i haven't checked MetaCritic, but i would assume it's got a high average all around, and i doubt they checked Pitchfork before doing their reviews.
  5. And the special $16.99. I know what is in the special because it is lavishly photographed on the Lips' website. what i don't know is what the normal DOES have. does it have the normal Wayne song commentary? i know all the music is on one disc instead of two. this doesn't bother me, and i'm not too keen on the DVD audio, so if those are the only two differences except the fur, then i'd go the cheaper route. but.......if i only get wayne's commentary in the fur (if it even has commentary) that will make it tougher. the fur is only somewhat enticing but not $10 enticing...
  6. just the other day i found an older issue of Tape Op where they talked about their studio. guess they already got tired of it.
  7. the mock stereo - i guess it just means the exact same file in both channels? if you listen to those two tracks in headphones in comparison to the rest you can tell a big difference. also listening to HDN I haven't gone back to my 87 CD, yet, but I"m pretty sure "If I Fell" is different. on the 87 i think the first vocal only has one voice, while the Stereo remaster starts with a doubled vocal. the Stereo also seems to either have a different very noticeable vocal goof at the end of a phrase , or it's just more prominent in that mix.
  8. that costs money. if someone wants to give me one, i'm game. i found Emerick's book used and got that and it was interesting. i just wondered about these two songs. i don't think i saw it mentioned in any big threads discussing the differences in the recordings just listening to some of PPM and With back to back - PPM Stereo has a ton more reverb - some so strong you can't understand it.
  9. has anyone listened to the Stereo remastering of Please Please Me (album)? i was listening on headphones and all the tracks had the seperation - most instruments on the left, most vocals on right, except two tracks. they sound like they're Mono. anyone know if i'm dreaming or what? weirdly, there is nothing on Wiki about it, but i noticed that Andy White played on the two songs that sound Mono - so maybe they were older recordings they couldn't make a Stereo master from?
  10. does it sound just like that live? it's not Auto-Tune T-Pain style obviously, but it's original use was to be "unnoticable" and correct minor pitch problems. his vocals just don't sound like that in any instance that i've ever heard. some people change their voice - like Dylan would - but it seems weird for Ed to do it on one song.
  11. i can't remember the titles - aren't there only 2 more acoustic based tracks - those. his voice sounds like it always has on the more rocking songs, but it sounds different on that. maybe it is a different voice - i never heard the Into the Wild stuff. maybe all of it sounds like that. there are some odd - unnatural vocal sounds to me.
  12. The All Music Guide review makes that album sound very interesting. Hopefully I can hunt down some songs to stream online.
  13. i think the Zombies - Odeysey and Oracle was around that time, too, but not certain. i'm pretty sure Emerick worked on it though.
  14. I was presently surprised by the album. I missed the S/T, but is this the first one to not have a really experimental, weird track like "I'm Open?" There seemed to be at least one. There was one on Riot Act, but I forget which one. The only thing - on the ballady songs Vedder's voice almost sounds Auto-Tuned - could it be? Are they hoping for a radio hit a la "Nowhere Man" or "Last Kiss," so they let Brendan put Auto-Tune on his vocals? I bought it at Target and haven't even tried downloading shows - how is the process/is there a time limit (like with the Wilco bonus downloads which went d
  15. he does write catchy songs - i think the profanity - even in the song titles - will hurt it as a commercial entity - although E manages to get songs on soundtracks/movies, etc anyway, so maybe not. of course, they'll probably say "i won't sell my music," but that may be the only way to make a decent income.
  16. ditto. i think the latest popular band they ate for lunch was Pearl Jam with Backspacer.
  17. a recent review on Amazon pointed out several of the differences on the Mono White - the biggest is the dropping of the "blisters on me fingers" bit.
  18. so everyone should blindly follow Pitchfork? also if you get an e-mail from an African prince offering you money it is true.
  19. that's why it's better to go to Metacritic and see what the average is. if something gets a really high rating on Pitchfork i will usually try to find some tracks to stream. then if the general consensus overall is good, too, then i will look more in depth.
  20. That's not how the Emerick book painted it. It was more like they already knew Lady Madonna was their next single and needed a promo so they just filmed them recording a new song which happened to be Hey Bulldog.
  21. that's how i heard about them.
  22. i streamed it once and was blown away. something about the last 2 albums has been a little too "clean" and borderline "cutesy." i predict this will be huge. Pitchfork may give it's first 10 for a new album in a while (they have given 1o's for reissues but not a real album in a while i don't think). If not 10, at least in the 9's...unless they just go off the deep end.
  23. www.spinner.com has tons of full album streams including this one. i was wary of the voice at first, but i got used to it and really liked the album. I couldn't seem to find a real website with real bio info (the Myspace has little info) - The group is two guys and it's called "Girls" and he sings (or are there 2 singers?) from the female viewpoint sometimes. Do I got it right?
  24. woah, what's the story on this? the other day i was listening to that song and wishing there was some footage of John going crazy at the end. then i read that the Lady Madonna video was actually them recording Bulldog (John said it didn't matter that they were recording another song), which i saw later on YouTube. did someone take that footage and re-edit it to synch with HB where it could?
