did Nabokov sell out by selling a novel to Hollyowood? is Anselm Kiefer a sellout because you can't buy a painting by him for less than US$400,000? was Andy Warhol a sellout because he was a 'sellout'? is Ian McKellan's Lear diminished by his Professor Xavier? identifying with an artist is understandable but it is narcissistic an artist and his/her work are not to be confused Jeff Tweedy/Wilco is/are not doing this to extend the patio on that property their investor purchased for them in Vanuatu (tax purposes) music is aesthetics and Father Time sorts all that out - five years from now what

I'd somehow forgotten about Gavin Bryars. I used to love Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet. I need to look into his work. Good to see the Reich. I'm wondering if people here are discovering him through Kotche's interest.

I understand that this will probably have a sparse response but any response would be great because i am particularly interested in any correlation in taste. Ideally this is a work/version inquiry - e.g. in the unlikely event that Bruckner's 6th is a favourite of yours it makes all the difference in the world if its Blomstedt's or Klemperer's version you prefer, etc - but if its just a piece that you know or love that's good too. No particular order... Schubert, Piano Sonata D. 960, etc - Stephen Kovacevich Stravinsky, The Rite of Spring - Kirov/Gergiev Reich, Proverb, Nagoya Marimbas,

Shaun of the Dead was superb. Can't wait to see Hot Fuzz. Extras can be a bit hit and miss but i have to say that the Ian McKellan episode, amongst a few others was great - the scene where he interviews Andy for a part in his play just may be the funniest scene for me in tv comedy, ever.

due to how much respect i have for her i'd be inclined to say there's a valid reason for it (i.e. related to a part she is playing - currently filming a David Fincher project) not like everyone was jumping up and down about how Christian Bale looked when he was shooting The Machinist, or De Niro during Raging Bull, blah blah

I pretty much agree with you, Rufer, but Feel So Free was probably my least favourite album from J. I was worried that the inspiration was waning and this has restored my faith.

i think it took me 36 hours to process the evening i saw the Matthew Passion at easter and it gave me the same sense of musical/sensory overload feels like an unattainable benchmark for a rock concert

periods with acronyms isn't good - think of our figjams, lombards and snafus!

Robbie Buck is ok, but he's a bit glib and paint-by-numbers was pretty short, but i suspect Jeff would like to be doing just about anything else than another interview, so fair play -

AM should win imo, but the YAI is a great return to form. I don't mind Sarah Blasko's album, but i would probably like it more if i hadn't discovered Cortney Tidwell first... =/

Fuzzy and Mighty Joe Moon are superb albums. After those i think the bass player left and something went awry. Copperopolis was decent but i really didn't like Jubilee at all - after that i sort of lost interest. Always meant to check back on his solo stuff but somehow never did. If anyone can recommend a particular album of his solo stuff that'd be appreciated ;-).

Glenn Richards, lyricist/songwriter for Augie March, one example amongst many: Addle Brains A Tuesday night in Winter, holed up in the city of ravens, The owls in the hills hoo-hooing and eyeing off the field mice down in the cold grey centre, Addle Brains lining up with the dead for the soup spoon, Addle Brains and the legions of the passed for the bread bag, Ladle the soup, pass the rolls, Addle Brains and the many not here and loose souls. One might fly off to the blank heavens and the lead high halls, O the hungry sky aches for blokes without folks and bulges with the bearers of pall

it appears that Glenn Richards of Augie March is doing solo shows to open for the tour ;-) this is about my dream opener so its fair to say my anticipation levels have gone off the charts

i'd have to say i prefer Funeral slightly... there are a few tracks which just don't grab me, which was not the case with the first album that said the highlights are brilliant

When someone is honestly 55% right, that's very good and there's no use wrangling. And if someone is 60% right, it's wonderful, it's great luck, and let him thank God. But what's to be said about 75% right? Wise people say this is suspicious. Well, and what about 100% right? Whoever says he's 100% right is a fanatic, a thug, and the worst kind of rascal.
