  1. loving the playoffs so far, particularly following SJ vs CAL, OV's exploits and the Habs quite funny to think Carey Price (Habs goalie) was 4 years old when they last won the division
  2. i hope Spike Milligan's pakistani dalek skit is on there
  3. Schubert's late string quartets and piano sonatas are a good point to start too. Pretty much all the great concertos, violin or piano, get people in quickly. Its a very immediately understandable form and there's a lot of stuff to explore (Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Elgar aside from the most famous names, for example). If you like the large scale stuff Bruckner and Mahler are worth a listen along with the more recognizable canon works like Beethoven. I saw Shostakovich's 8th symphony last Friday and its incredible... Amongst contemporary/moderns Steve Reich is very listenable (plu

  10. Where You Been - Dinosaur Jr is the breakup album for me there's a lot of individual songs by that many people but that's the album with A Ghost is Born riding shotgun
  11. The Tyrannicide Brief - Geoffrey Robertson this is an account of the life and times of the man who prosecuted Charles I... its particularly fascinating in regards to the present state of international law as it is applied to dictators such as Pinochet and Milosevic (great read if e.g. you've seen and enjoyed The Lsat King of Scotland)
  12. Ballad of a Thin Man - Malkmus Sludgefeast - Dino Jr Simple Twist of Fate - JT August & September - Elbow Magnet's Coil - Sebadoh
  13. mmm one good thing about these lists is they remind me of good things i have meant to check out for ages and forgotten
  14. uhh yeah Brian Eno pretty much much invented it in the late 70's, but if you think an album like Takk is ambient...
  15. is it such a strange idea that people have copied their very distinctive musical style?
  16. exactly what is pretentious about Sigur Ros, in your opinion?
  17. lot of amazing films mentioned but i want to shout out for The Sweet Hereafter and Yi Yi - both spectacular but hardly anyone ever seems to have seen them most recent film i genuinely admired was Zodiac (i only saw it a month ago )
  18. i like your choice, Cash

  20. funny how popular it is to bash them... they lost me a bit over Kid A and Amnesiac, though there's some good things on both, and didn't like HTTT, but back in fine form now
  21. bah to Melbourne getting two shows to Sydneys one again but hey, one is definately better than none, can't wait
  22. I have no more interest in what a director says than what an actor says - his skill is film direction and he'll always attract my interest due to what he's made before - and this film looks like he challenged himself to try it. Curious to see the results.
