  1. I'm leaning toward not going. There are storms in the forecast, and I'm seeing Bright Eyes with the Mountain Goats up near Syracuse next month, about an hour from me. Of course that show was announced after I'd already gotten the ticket for this one. I'd really like to see these guys and M. Ward, but not badly enough to pay for a hotel or do a late-night drive. They seem like a band who may play in the area, though, so maybe I'll get to catch them another time.
  2. I have a ticket to see them + M. Ward + Bright Eyes tomorrow in Philadelphia. It's an excellent billing, but I'm still waffling about going because I don't feel like making the four-hour drive there and the four-hour drive back.
  3. Sometimes I wonder if there are people in a third world country with all the t-shirts and tote bags Wilco doesn't manage to get rid of. I do actually like that shirt design, but I won't order Wilco shirts online anymore. I got the orange one with the Scrabble tiles on it awhile back because I needed one more item to be able to get a good discount. It's really low quality. I've never had a Wilco shirt that's held up well, aside from my Pronto and Singers shirts. I'm looking forward to picking this up at Solid Sound, but I'm glad to see they're selling it online, too, so people who can't ma
  4. My BBC album arrived today. Thoughtful and lovely packaging, as always from Cryptogramophone. I've been reading papers for my summer class all day, so my brain is sort of fried. Hopefully I'll be up for a first listen this evening, though.
  5. I remember considering coming down for that show, then imagining those oven-like conditions. That changed my mind in a hurry! A few Nels shows in New York that I've heard about in the last few days... Nels and Marc Ribot will be playing two sets at Le Poisson Rouge in the West Village next Wednesday at 8:30 and 10:30 (doors and hour earlier for each set). $15 per set in advance or $20 the day of the show. They're also sharing the cover of Downbeat magazine in July! On Monday, July 11, Nels will be playing two sets--8 and 10 p.m.--with the Les Paul Trio at the Iridium Jazz Club as part of
  6. I don't think you can convince Moss he didn't feel like the show was safe. He knows how he felt in that moment. Facts about song variety or a song that's only been played a handful of times can't change that (though I'll say that I'm insanely jealous you got to hear Zooropa; that's long been on my list of songs I know I'll never get to hear U2 play). A production this gigantic has to be so carefully planned and orchestrated that it's inevitable that it's going to feel safe. The last time I saw U2 was the Vertigo show in Buffalo in December of 2005. I was in the first row outside of the inner
  7. Mmmmm, spammy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITeuaqcpckc
  8. Deerhoof is one of my favorite bands, so this was an easy choice for me. I like Deer Tick, too, but I thought their last album was pretty mediocre.
  9. It's odd to me that we're going two summers without a Wilco tour. I expected they would've announced some dates for July and August, but if they haven't by now, I'm guessing they won't.
  10. I actually don't mind the title. It's a hell of a lot catchier than Wilco (The Album). I hope it's a hell of a lot better, too.
  11. I'm glad this is finally going to see the light of day. I'm hoping this will be the first of two Nels + Jim Black albums for this year, since I know there's a Mischief and Mayhem album in the works. I'm not sure if they got the whole thing recorded last summer, though.
  12. For anybody who didn't get the Justin Townes Earle 7", Bloodshot Records had them available this afternoon for $7.41, including media mail shipping. I was glad to be able to order one, since it didn't look like my store had any. For what it's worth, I bought more regular stock stuff than I did RSD goodies. I don't stop by the shop too often, only because I know I can't make it out the door without spending $50+, even if I only look through the jazz section. ETA: looks like the JTE 7" is sold out now.
  13. In the last few weeks, somebody must have sold a pretty big jazz collection to the store, because they had a lot of stuff they didn't when I was last there. I got the remastered Bitches Brew, plus Tomorrow Is the Question, Science Fiction, and Live at the Golden Circle Vol. Two by Ornette Coleman. There were a few others I had my eye on, but I remembered I was walking home and that it's windy and rainy here today, so I didn't want to have too much to carry. One of my friends found the Deerhoof/Xiu Xiu 7" for me
  14. I got the Ryan Adams, the Sonic Youth, and the Deerhoof releases. I was #36 in line, so a few things I wanted were already gone by the time it was my turn, and I got the only copy of the Ryan Adams that my store had. I'm hoping one of my friends can find the Deerhoof/Xiu Xiu 7" for me today. All were more expensive than I was expecting, especially the Sonic Youth, but that's sort of a trend for the new records in the shop I was at. I also ended up buying a bunch of used jazz records and got great deals on those.
  15. You're complaining about the processing charges for a charity show? Really? I don't remember them being any higher than usual for the one I went to two years ago.
  16. The summer after my freshman or sophomore year of college, some of my friends from high school dragged me to a DMB show. Within half an hour long before it even got dark out, I was almost peed and puked on by the same completely trashed girl. I moved to the back of the field because I was afraid what she was going to do next. I have no memories of the concert at all except that.
  17. I'm pretty sure a 7" of Racing In the Street is on the list for Record Store Day releases.
  18. It's odd that they call Ground obscure, because I had a much easier time finding that a few years back than I did Silencer. In fact, it took me a really long time to find a copy of Silencer that I could afford. A few copies I was bidding on on ebay ended up going for over $40. It's been awhile since I've listened to any of the Trio albums. Maybe I'll break them out this weekend.
  19. I'd like to think he has enough respect for the current members of Wilco that he wouldn't "fire" anybody. Then again, I'd also like to think he has the ability to write stronger songs than he has on the last two albums. Maybe I'm wrong about both things. I hope not, but it wouldn't shock me if I was. At what point does Jeff + whoever else stop being Wilco, though? I mean, if there are major lineup changes in the next few years, why should Jeff keep the band name instead of just going off and being a solo artist with a backing band? I worry sometimes that that's how a lot people perceive Wil
  20. While I'm not a huge Yoko Ono fan, I don't like seeing her maligned, either. It's silly to say that she'd break up Wilco--and while I read that as a joke, I'm sure there are people here who seriously think that. Nels is amazing at multitasking when it comes to his creative projects. And like Lou said, it's not like the Plastic Ono Band has a rigorous performing or recording schedule. It wouldn't shock me if he started working with them more regularly--it makes sense for a lot of reasons--but that's not really any different from any of the other side/solo projects the other guys have. That sa
  21. Yeah, it's available as part of that EP on iTunes. I bought it yesterday since I didn't have it. This show was INSANE. I was so sore when I woke up yesterday from all the dancing I did, and I wasn't even on the floor. They had a choir of about 10 or 15 guys for quite a few songs, along with a brass section for some songs and a larger than usual version of the band. Not to mention the biggest disco ball I've ever seen. The vocals sounded really muddy to me, and I got a little bored during parts of the second set, but this was still one of the biggest and most fun shows I've ever been at. Ever
  22. I also hope they sell a digital copy of it, like they did for their London show last fall. The quality of that one is great. I'm leaving tomorrow for New York
  23. I've been searching for a ticket for Saturday since the day of the presales and had had no luck finding anything I could afford that was going to give me a decent view. Then yesterday they released more tickets, and I got a pair in the first row of section 106! I'm sad that my first time seeing a band I've grown to love over the last year will be my last time, but at least I know it's going to be an amazing show.
  24. Thanks for the head's up. I've been getting a lot of junk mail lately. With my luck, I would've ripped my ticket in half!
