Yea, I was in Grafton IL last year for the first time. Interesting place. Google some of the material on Paramount. There is some pretty interesting stuff about it. When you consider that most of those we now think of as the major country blues figures traveled there to cut records, it is stunning. I know this isn't about jazz any more. Someday I would like to check out Grafton WI, even though there isn't much really left there. I mean who would have thought a back water place like that would hold so much musical history. LouieB

Wisconsin actually. Although Grafton IL is a pretty cool town. I have never actually been to Grafton WI, just passed it on the highway. The idea of the blues singers from the south having to go to Grafton Wisc always amazes me. But then againi alot of them ended up in NYC to record as well. How Paramount Records ended up in a backwater like that is crazy, but then again the Gennett company was in Richmond, Indiana and a bunch of great old recordings were made there as well. Yea, actually that was pretty much of a rhetorical question. I know what the answer is. Regarding armed guards, etc, to protect the President. Obviously they ARE necessary because there is a pretty clear record of assassination successes and attempts. I am all in favor of free speech, all of it. But even for that there are some limitations. And of course unlimited amounts of money are now classified as speech, so despite all the talk of saving the Constitution, the concept of free speech is a bit different now than 200 years ago. And of course back then, not everyone could vote either.

Interesting question. So many times I look at reissues of music frojm all genres that list Chicago as the origin of the music. The really famous studios such as Columbia in NYC or RCA and Nashville, Sun in Memphis or Parmount in Grafton Wisc, Rudy Van Gelder in NJ,, Chess on Michicagn Ave, etc. are all pretty clear, but the rest?? It would be interesting to know. Certainly a whole ton of stuff was recorded here. It could well have been in radio studios, hotel ballrooms, or some other hall. I have no idea. LouieB

Few people share your view, to say the least. When it comes to immigration, people freak out. Needless to say, without a healthy dose of new immigrants, both legal and undocumented, a heck of alot of work would not get done in this country. Also few people can withstand the test of never having employed an undocumented worker. Maybe not directly, but there are sure plenty who do the work for us in all areas. There are some super upsetting things that "the government" is doing which gets put at Obama's feet because he is the presient. The Frontline on ICE the other night discussed some pretty distrurbing things about deportations. But I believe Obama does want comprehensive immigration reform and Congress just ain't going there. So we plod on and break up families and do crazy stuff in the name of controlling illegial immigration. Rommney has already said he is going to be hard on the undocumented and probably isn't going to do anything about this if he could. I think Obama would if he could.

South Korea is NOT southeast Asia, or at least in my opinion it isn't. Heck I don't even think of the Phillipines as SE Asian, but I suppose technically it is. How old are the students? Stuff from the Vietnam - War Paco's Story is good, as is The Things They Carried. A good movie about the war in Cambodia is The Killing Fields, but not for anyone too young. Unfortunately the war is what is embedded in many American's brains with that part of the world. But again the area includes Thailand and Malasyia as well as what used to be called Indo-China. Southeast Asia is a pretty diverse place. How many countries are you taking in in. Just Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos alone are very different in culture, language, etc. Throw in some of the other countries and I don't know what to tell you. LouieB
