That is the way I bought and still buy records. I think I posted up that I found a promo copy of a Townes Van Zandt LP on Poppy (all the early ones I have are on Tomato which are also long out of print) at a resale shop where I got a bunch of LPs for a buck 25. Now days I buy used LPs for more because I have more money, but finding stuff at junk shops, yard sales, etc. for little or no money is still the funnest way to buy LPs. Checking cut out bins (which don't exist anymore) or dollar bins is still alot of fun, finding common, obscure or just plain goofy shit for little money can't be beat

That was my point. I would assume in this petro rich world that melting down unused LPs is a thing of the past. Of course pops and other surface noise is also a product of the dies being in good shape as well as records being pressed in a clean environment. I am old enough to remember the record crises of the 70s and own a good many dynaflex records made by RCA. Some are crap and some are okay. On a more historical note - old 78s were also melted down during WWII for their component materials. Kind of a bummer when you think about it. During the LP era (50s to early 80s), so many LPs we

Sorry I missed this first time around. This is my point exactly. Everyone needs to remember that sometimes the warping is part of the manufacturing, not from sitting around in someone's hot car or attic for weeks or years. All records are pressed hot, so if the manufacturer is not careful any album could be warped. Are LPs made out of non-virgin vinyl anymore? Maybe, but who says virgin vinyl is better than recycled anyway? I believe this is also a bit of hype. LouieB

That was the good old days wasn't it? What's a copy of the album going for now? You used to be able to get them fairly easily. KT is a perfectly great album on CD and I am sure it will sound fine on vinyl too. I can't believe folks are complaining about this and it isn't even out yet. Those who think it will sound like shit need to leave it alone so the rest of us can get coopies. In ten years it may be selling on eBay for $40, when no one cares about LPs or Wilco anymore. LouieB

The beauty of the internet...it is hard to figure out what people are saying. No, I think TJ and DC are still reasonable and I think other companies also are reasonable, but I think more reissues and frankly non-reissues are too expensive. Giving folks an MP3 download is just good sense. So all those LPs all those years that were not 180 were shit? I don't think so. Frankly it is what is in the grooves, not how big the disk is that makes a difference. Hell there are even some dynaflex LPs that play perfectly fine from back in teh 80s. Sure it is nice to think that the extra heft makes a

Okay so Drag City is currently $14....that's just over $10 in my book. A single LP that sells for $25 (not the super deluxe Wilco reissues we are all scrambling to get..) is overpriced. That doesn't mean you shouldn't buy it, but to me, I really gotta want something to pay that much (I bought a Bert Jansch reissue at $20 a few years ago.) Somne of those going for the upper limit are also "boutique" pressings too, but then many albums fall into this category unless the big record companies have the dies around and are re-pressing old albums. All this falls into the category of whatever the m

Well yes this is certainly true. There are also less facilities to make LPs than CDs (anymore), but that still does not account for new LPs being $25. It was just a few years ago that new LPs being sold by Thrill Jockey and Drag City were selling for just over $10. While CDs were overpriced in the early days, now LPs are occupying that same part of the market because of increased demand, not because of that much more to manufacture them. Granted t is more, but even those on so called audiofile vinyl can't account for that much of a difference except pure economics. I know that used LPs are

Well i gotta give you credit then. You must really like hanging there. I have bid on a few things and been totally outbid most of the time, because I can't figure out when to go back and rebid. Good for you. LouieB

Frankly it is difficult to figure what people really want. Assuming this is correct (and why not really, there are plenty of disaffected lefties out there, but are they really being asked this question by these pollsters???) the main message the right wing has convinced folks of (including the Chicago Tribune) is that people are down on this whole thing and want it stopped. Clearly enough Democrats believe this and voted against it and NO Republicans believed that they might gain by supporting this bill. What are all those Attornies General thinking by filing suit? Many people can't foc -
I find ebay tends to be fairly expensive, but if you have the patience to sell on there i suppose you can do okay. I very rarely buy new LPs. While CDs are dropping in price, the new LPs are now expensive because of the supply and demand curve, rather than the technology, which is over 100 years old at this point. Case in point.....whatever is passing for ESP put out both volumes of Sun Ra's Heliotropic Worlds on new vinyl for over $25 a pop. I have both on CD. I see no reason to upgrade for that kind of price, particularly since it is a pretty lo-fi set of music anyway. But someone WI

Finally a man of reason... If you don't mind the occasional pop or surface noise, vinyl is perfectly fine. Even a somewhat beat up CD will play flawlessly. The major problem with LPs is that you can't play them in your car, at the park, or anywhere except where there is a turntable. So unless you are Elvis and can have one in your jet or your limo, you are stuck with digital music for on the go, be it CD or iPod from download or CD. That doesn't mean I don't love LPs. I found an original Poppy/demo copy of a Townes Van Zandt album at a resale shop somewhere off the beaten track

We shall see....The GOP could sweep the next elections and retake the White House in 2012. The US of A could be dumb enough to turn it back over to them. LouieB -
You must be far richer than I was at your age. Even though new LPs were 3 or 4 bucks at that time, it seemed like a whole lot to buy one and then discard it that soon. At 20 bucks a shot, a new LP is still a big investment and I have much more money now. Then again when I was your age you couldn't sell back LPs at most stores. And then again again, I know LPs on resale aren't worth all that much. LouieB

I semi-read a story about dead Jimi kicking dead Elvis's ass. Can't recall the details at the moment. LouieB

I don't know. Maybe a friendly thing, but in an all out brawl I would put my dough on Bragg...he is much bigger. LouieB

Yea, it is sad. They don't give a shit about anything. It is all about power and control. Oh and to the poster who said Obama is a liar....nah, he is just a politician.. Oh and by the way....everyone flips and flops and everyone contradicts themselves. I have yet to meet anyone who doesn't. Limbaugh isn't moving...he makes too much money doing what he is doing right where he is. LouieB -
I dunno...I think the death of CD is still greatly exaggerated. I am happy folks like vinyl, but I was in a record store yesterday in Evanston where they sell both and now with the market for vinyl expanding and prices rising, there are lots of CDs for sale for cheap. If you play a CD through a decent stereo system it sounds fine. Price will eventually push some folks interested in LPs out of the market. Plenty of folks were looking at and buying CDs at this store. Also some artists simply aren't going to be able to press up LPs and are going to have to continue to rely on CDs (and downloads

Don't I know this better than anyone. After more than a year of this bullshit, reading about it in every paper, magazine, blog, etc. and listening to talk radio on every side of the spectrum, this seems more pointless than ever. The madness surrounding this and just about every aspect of the quickly aging Obama presidency is becoming numbing. Anyone that thinks that Obama runs this country or that he is either a right wing sell-out no better than Bush or a left wing commie, islamic, facist etc, etc. has their heads up their ass. To me it is clear that Obama wants to do the correct thin -

All bills (laws) need to be tweaked to conform to existing conditions. This one will also need to be revised as time goes on. Nothing stays the same and considering the pressure cooker this one was developed in, some parts of it will need to be redrawn sooner than later. Arguing about if this is good or bad is pointless. To those who think we need more coverage for people, it is a step in that direction. For those crying that this is government take-over of health care (like the health insurance companies are doing such a great job) this is nothing short of fascism. The world won't stop tur -
Artistic differences?? Maybe the way the album was mixed. Really what is the difference?? If there is more material, it is all to the good as far as I am concerned. As I have said for years...someday we will have the complete Mermaid Avenue sessions box set. LouieB

Yea, there is a seamy side to EVERY movement, right, left, and center, but frankly there isn't any reason to call an African American Congressman a "nigger" EVER. Call people liars, facists, commies, baby killers, whatever, but using that kind of racial slur is beyond the pale. LouieB -

the Teabaggers are gonna run out of places to go where there aren't too many "colored" folks and they still speak English. Imagine what it must have been like for John Lewis to be called the "n-word" the other day, all these years after his experiences in the civil rights movement in the 50s and 60s. No matter what the reason for people's anger (most of which I can't figure out since this discussion should have been rational), that was uncalled for and shows the seamy side of the tea party movement. This seems to be a correct story. Irving Berlin wrote God Bless America. There was a great article in the NY Times a few years back about the dicotomy of popular music based on these songs. I guess I forget that many of the guitar players on this board aren't of the hootenanny generation.... LouieB

I doubt they will be going there....they have socialized medicine there already. They need to go somewhere that people die in the streets for lack of healthcare, since that is basically what they want. LouieB -
