  1. Wow, you must be a real glutton for punishment. Luckily there books are just about the only reporting on how nutty JD was. Ultimatly I guess that I am curious about his quirks, etc, but I think we all have to feel lucky that most of what we know of his last 50 years is relatively slim compared to the public travesty that was Jackson's life during the last 25 or so years. But given the choice between buyng some crap Michael Jackson music or some less than stellar work by JD Salinger, I would pay for the Salinger. LouieB
  2. Trendy? If it is it has been trendy for oh....about 60 or more years. I am sure Jeff Tweedy covered it at some point....every who ever picked up a guitar has played it. LouieB
  3. Certain age I suppose. But I was a young kid when that was on TV. I guess I had no idea he was still around. Had a nice long life. LouieB
  4. Tonight Rosie is playing some Big Star in rememberance of Alex Chilton.... LouieB
  5. I know, I just figured we could continue the convo about this. For all us Salinger fans, unlike all of us MJ fans, we have been largely spared the gory details of Salinger's somewhat bizarre personal life. After a point I just don't want to know (or do I) just how crazy some of these guys are. Seeing the old pictures of JD, he looks so normal. Hopefully we won't have to have to think of him in the same way we had to think about the elderly and equally nutty Howard Hughes. Jackson's slow public decline was agonizing to say the least. LouieB
  6. Okay, crazy electronic stuff....I'm good with that. LouieB
  7. Agreed. I also agree with this too, all except the Salinger part. Salinger was never in debt because what he had released and his rather subdued lifestyle, meant he didn't have to publish more. As long as folks keep buying your old work and you don't live outside your means, you can go on forever. Jackson was clearly batshit crazy. He could easily have lived a fairly opulant lifestyle with what he did early in his career and never release another piece of music, but he couldn't control himself. Many artists do exactly what Salinger did (but maybe not so reclusive) and live off of the
  8. That's very cool, since the bulk of their schedule that I have seen is pretty mainstream. On an different jazz note - see the jazz thread.... LouieB
  9. Thanks for posting this up. Millenium Park is certainly NOT Preston Bradley (sadly), but it will still be fun to see them there for free (or not). Who is Huntsville? LouieB
  10. Wow, this is really sad. Not only that, Alex and I are exactly the same age. Life is way too short. I put the Big Star Box set on my iPod and listen to it quite alot. It is kind of amazing that this material just came out and now he is gone. LouieB
  11. Sounds like a good reason to get in line....., but wow, the price is kinda high. LouieB
  12. This is sort of true, except the Presley catalogue didn't include a bunch of unreleased stuff; it was merely re-packaging. Of course every artist gets a bump when they die, but in Elvis' case he continued to sell well for decades and still does. Michael by contrast has really less to bank on. Unlike Elvis who had dozens and dozens of albums and singles to continually repackage, Jackson has only a handful of really popular albums and now the anticipation of some gems in the can. This is not something I would bank on if I were a record exec, but someone undoubtedly knows something. Had Jacks
  13. Putting aside Jacksons personal life for a moment.... If he had music in the can that was this good, why didn't he put it out? He was swimming in debt and planning that 50 show thing to help himself out. How good can this stuff be if he didn't bother to release it?? LouieB
  14. Right....so now his family no longer has to worry about a thing. Feel free to Google this yourself. It is all over the news. It is so great when an artist is worth more dead than alive..... LouieB
  15. Just chiming in on a small issue here. NCLB is the totality of federal aid to education. Those aspects of it that are ridiculous and counter productive should be taken out to be sure, but there are many aspects of the entire bill (which is only called NCLB because of Bush) which are perfectly fine, including massive amount of funds to help local schools and many special initiatives that even liberals like (since this law was cosponsored by Ted Kennedy). 16. Expect a good time with some challenging music. The Cultural Center huh? Hope it is in Preston Bradley Hall. That would be cool. it doesn't appear to be listed on that website yet. Stuff is always (almost) free there too. (Unless the Cultural Arts Center is somewhere different, since I have never heard it refered to as that.) LouieB
  17. Take the AmTrak, really?? Doesn't it go in the middle of the night? I understand the Megabus is pretty inexpensive and leaves at more human hours. I have taken the train a time or two from Cleveland (my former hometown). It is an adventure I suppose. LouieB
  18. Elvis C did a nice version of "I just don't know what to do with myself" on Stiff's Live way back when... LouieB
  19. This is cool news... LouieB
  20. This is true...gotta get me one of them, now that you mention it. Luckily it is half a mile from my pad. Apropos of nothing other than we are both jazz fans; did you see a new jazz club opened up on North Ave? Gotta check that out sometime. Looks like they are booking mostly mainstream stuff, but it might be worth a trip. Name....Blujazz... LouieB
  21. It has some really great moments and some great quirky performances. You gotta love John Goodman in his first big role, Pops Staples is great as well, along with Spaulding Grey who had very few parts in movies other than his own monologues. Also Wild Wild Life is a fun sequence. LouieB
  22. Some of the best cheese fries in town are at Max's way up on Western Ave (5900 N and 2400 W) on the far north side. They also truly have some of the best Italian Beef in the city as well. They have no other locations. A trip to this part of town is also an excuse to visit Rosehill Cemetary (right across the street) which is the largest cemetary within the city limits. I have spent many an afternoon there among the monuments and mausoleums. Great place for a little respit (take a Max's lunch for an all around good time.) LouieB
  23. True Stories isn't a great movie, but it isn't garbage. In fact I think it is pretty fun to watch. I saw it when it came out in the theaters and I took my kids to see it at the Music Box a couple years ago. I own both the songs and the incedental music on LP. Talking Heads have been overexposed, but they are still a great band with a great catalogue. LouieB
  24. I wonder who is hosting in Chicago?? These guys were extremely cool to work with when WhiskeyBender taped them. We did both an extended concert with them and interviews, as well as a short solo studio thing with Will a couple years earlier. Check it all out at Whiskey bender productions LouieB
  25. Money for Nothin is one of the great singles of all time. Had WXRT not played the living shit out of them over the years, I might actually have picked up their LPs used, but I have never seen any reason to listen to them at home since I know they will be played for all eternity on XRT. LouieB
