Strangely enough the Bloodshot folks themselves think this his weakest album of the four he has done with them. If you like that one, check out the others. There is also a pretty good live album from this period as well, with old and new songs on it and he is backed by the Figgs....looks like it is out of print though. LouieB

He certainly went through a middle career period that was less than great, but this new stuff is something else. LouieB

That was pretty cool. LouieB

Folks like to post up about new albums by artists. One of my old faves, Graham Parker, just released Imaginary Television on Bloodshot. Not only is he keeping up a pretty good string on Bloodshot, late in his career, but this one is excellent, maybe the best so far of the last four. It is currently available on LP too. I saw him last Saturday at the Old Town School with the Figgs and they ripped it up. LouieB

Caribbean movies, literature, music, art

Yea, okay I suppose. And on the other side I was suggesting the entire field of afro-cuban/caribbean musics of other sorts needs some recognition. The jazz and dance musics produced by those artists, while not as popular, are fairly significant. LouieB -

I was half fucking around really. Belafonte was an artist of great importance and certainly his popularizing of calypso was important. But it is sort of like suggesting one listen to the Dave Clark Five to understand rock and roll. Belfonte's importance as a major black pop music person can't be denied. The other night though an old friend and I were listening to one of his lesser known albums (he made alot) and I said "no one sings like that anymore...they couldn't get away with it." The type of music we listen to now is so removed from the "folk-pop" music he sang it is stunning. It wa -

Lauries was an absolute mob scene and I arrived around 5 PM. Hopefully these folks will continue to patronize the place after this is over. Oh yea, and to the VCer who got me to buy him some stuff last year and then didn't pay me. Feel free to send a check if you get a chance. LouieB

I ordered one online yesterday after not making it to Record Day in time to cop one. LouieB

Old REM vinyl is harder to find than it used to be but I doubt it is "rare". I have also had mine forever and replacing it seems nonsensical. LouieB

REally? As probably the only VCer who owns any Belefonte records, yea, I suppose if you count is calypso period... There are many Trojan box sets actually. I have an entirely different one that is also very good. I have no idea how many there are, but enough to bankrupt the average music buyer. Actually I woke up this AM realizing no one had mentioned the most obvious type of music: Afro-Ciban or more accurately Afro-Caribbean. If you google these terms you will find a wealth of information on musical artists, many of whom are some of he most skilled jazz type musicians. The radio s -

That was going to be my suggestion too. Let me think....The King Kong sessions for early Jamacian music of the same period. LouieB -
Because they can. This has been a topic here on VC ever since I started coming here. It isn't that they don't care, it is that rock audiences don't think talking at shows is rude. Other kinds of audiences do think it is rude, but not rock ones. LouieB

Perhaps it is no longer in print.....which does not mean it is rare, just that it may be in demand. LouieB

I don't know how many they are making, but only making 1000 doesn't seem sensible. LouieB

Those are the albums to get. I did not see GS in the early days, but had a great time at the last GS at the Vic when even with Tweedy they couldn't fill the place. LouieB

Now that we are talking about it, I need to play it on the turntable I actually have set up that plays at 78. LouieB

I know I have the first album and Grape Jam. Not sure about Wow. One of them has a cut that you have to play at 78 RPMs. I saw a copy of the first album without the finger at the CHIRP record sale this weekend. LouieB

They nearly tore the place down a few years ago. Benton is a fairly depressed little town, but it does have really good antique stores. LouieB
