  1. thanks for going back to this. Hollywood or not, it fits Herzog's theme of man against the world. Herzog isn't getting any younger, so any new movie will be a treat. LouieB
  2. No but I am digging what's in your groove... LouieB
  3. --> QUOTE(Paul B @ Jan 18 2007, 09:12 AM) I have early Woody, Bob Newhart and Jonathan Winters on vinyl too........all cheap finds at garage sales and resale shops. Yea, there was a time you could find all that kind of stuff at garage sales and resale shops. Most of my comedy/spoke word LPs are from these sources. Shelly Berman, Mort Sahl, etc. The Lord Buckley I had to actually pay more for, since they are rare. The Lenny Bruce were all cut-outs. LouieB
  4. I just bought this the other day and have not yet had time to listen to it. I did see Frequency last night and recommend their album on Thrill Jockey if you like free jazz. I am also very fond of the Tortoise Box set that came out last year. If you like Bloodshot, the new Bobby Bare Jr. and Paul Birch are are both good too. LouieB
  5. I have not kept up on my Herzog and have not rented Grizzly Man. Fitzcarraldo is a great movie too, but somehow taken in order it seems like a sequel to Aguirre with the crazy trip and jungle and all. As mentioned the documentary about the making of the movie is a must see as well. I wish I could find the article that was in the New Yorker about his new movie about a prisoner of war and his travails. If someone has info on that, it is worth sharing. LouieB
  6. yup....that was the craziest show ever.... LouieB
  7. I have it too...I also have some Lenny Bruce on vinyl as well as Lord Buckley. LouieB
  8. Robbie Fulks "Fountains of Wayne Hotline" still cracks me up. Really, criticizing them for being poppy is unfair. They are quite good at what they do and the only time I saw them they opened for Wilco.... LouieB

Here in Illinois all the politicians are on Rezko's payroll, so look for plenty of mileage on this story in the months to come. His support of Gianoulious was ridiculous as well, but what the heck, I'll vote for him. The one constant about politics in Illinois is that it is all dirty, so no matter how clean Obama appears, he has plenty of dirt to dish ultimately. Remember this is the town where Daley reins supreme and nearly every politician is on the take (Democrat or Republican). We love it.... LouieB
  10. Well aside from the fact that it is one of my favorite movies ever (it came out when I was in my 20s I think), I figure my daughter the film student really needed to see it. After seeing it and checking out some info on the IMDB, we discovered that Aguirre was NOT storyboarded and was filmed with an unbelievably small crew. That makes the entire movie even more amazing. Between the footage coming off the Andes, the crazy shit that goes on while on the river and then the final gut wrenching disintegration of the entire enterprise complete with cute monkeys and all; no matter whether or not t
  11. If only he could take back his performance in THe DaVinci Code.....if only I could get a refund on my time I watched it too....(Luckily I saw some of The Terminal in the meantime, which I did like...) LouieB
  12. Actually those are pretty hard to find...I have all the other NY from that time period but for some stupid reason I never got this one..... LouieB
  13. If you see my comments above, when someone called both of these individuals "giants" I commented that I felt that neither fit that description. Brecker was certainly a competent and ubiquitous sideman, but I never got the feeling he was a jazz heavyweight by any stretch of the imagination. Nothing wrong with having a great career as a sideman, but he isn't one of immortals. I also commented that Alice's chief claim to fame was her relationship with one of the true giants, John Coltrane himself. Nothing in Alice's work in John late career bands was that outstanding as far as I was concerned
  14. Maybe they need the money... LouieB
  15. Maybe Randy doesn't live in a mansion, what do I know. But my hunch is that the residuals from his soundtracks are substantial, since I am sure he gets a piece of every DVD that is sold, etc. His WB albums remain in print and he still gets royalties from people covering his songs and his own songs being played on the radio. Needless to say, the guy isn't poverty stricken. Meanwhile you are correct that the Walker Brothers had huge hit singles back in the 60s. (Again covering others songs) I remember them well and I know that they were more popular in GB than here. The 60s was a long time
  16. Meaning?? You didn't like it or what? LouieB
  17. Well the Walker Brothers had a few hit singles, but until people started talking about Scott Walker in the last couple years, I couldn't place him. Meanwhile Scott still puts out pretty out there stuff, lauded by critics and indie rock freaks like us and Randy Newman gets to sit in a big old mansion in LA and count is dough. Sorry comrade, there is just no comparison. Actually "the sun ain't gonna rise anymore" or whatever their hit single was called wasn't even written by them, it was written by Frankie Valli who made gobs of money in his own right....and Make it easy on yourself was a B
  18. [ yea, I guess it is just you and me. Looked like more than that, so let the fun continue. I don't know how big a mansion Randy lives in (I will get right on it after I get done with this posting...), but if you discount the Beatles material I am gonna bet that Randy Newman is every bit as rich as Paul McCartney's post Beatles career. Yea, Okay Wings sold a shitload of albums, but McCartney didn't score dozens of movies. In fact more artists have covered Randy Newman than have covered post-Beatles McCartney I am sure. Actually since Scott Walker is a cult artist, his covering of Tom H

If he doesn't quit he may end up sounding like Joni Mitchell.... LouieB
  20. Well if you want to point out that his albums did only so so when first released, okay fine. But his albums are still in print and the fact that as a new artist he cracked the Billboard charts in any event is pretty darned good compared to many songwriters who NEVER crack the Billboard charts at all. Hasn't been rewarded (first off read the entire entry, he has written more than just Disney films)?? He is one of the most successful contemporary soundtrack composers there is. I am sure he isn't getting just a few dollars for these soundtracks and I am willing to bet they sell pretty well t
  21. My point is that Randy Newman is very famous, both as a composer of soundtracks, movie songs and even his older singer/songwriter stuff. Numerous artists have covered Randy's songs, to the point that he is a rather wealthy songwriter even if he had only written for others. (Three Dog Night's hit with Mama Told Me not to Come, was huge.) But in fact he produced a reasonable number of his own hits (Short People) and sold just fine on WB until they decided to clean house (which swept away alot of well known artists including Van Morrision.) See this entry in Wikipedia if you don't believe me..
  22. Okay NOW I get it...you have to sell as many records as the Beatles and the Stones to not be underappreciated. That puts just about everyone in that category then. LouieB
  23. I have not seen White Diamond, but Aguirre is one of the best movies ever made. It was at the Music Box this December and I dragged TG to see it. LouieB
