what the hell am i going to do in Chicago?
LouieB replied to i for barton's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I am not sure why you are quoting me from that last thread where the guy gave NO indication of what he was going. This is pretty rude. This individual on the other hand gave LOTS of information about himself and what he was looking for and certainly is deserving of some attention. Marah is playing Friday at Schuba's, if you don't want to see AD and HWB. Both shows will be great though I think. Chicago is certianly worth coming to. It is a bit of a haul from O'hare to Union Park, but you can certainly make with a change or two on public trans. It may be just as easy to drive down and par -
When did encores become longer than the show itself?? LouieB

Let's not forget all of Jon Langford's groups.... LouieB

Yea, plus his songs are so damn witty and a bit profane...not a bad combo. LouieB

How could I forget Ike?? I know the guy personally and he is every bit as good live as on CD (and loud). I think Salesman and Racists is better, but all his CDs have merit and he is a very fun performer with a crack band. LouieB

Really good...nice pounding drums... LouieB

Sure come on....I encourage everyone. Really we have just barely scratched the surface of what goes on here. There is about anything you could want or see here and the cost of living isn't too high (though not as cheap as it used to be.) The wild thing is just the weekend and city planned fests are enough to keep one hopping all summer, not to mention the commercial fests (don't forget Pitchfork is next weekend), a great club scene and plenty of stuff to do in between. yea, I mentioned him...he is certainly gaining lots of popularity here. For all those who want something different, there is a house fest this weekend on Northerly Island....that could be fun.... LouieB

Yea, but Glenn opened for them a few times recently. Califone is a cool Chicago band too.....they haven't been playing much lately. LouieB

Sure they will..... Walken should have been on the poll..(I will be crushed if they use a different title on the album though...)..Germany is a good one too... LouieB

Yup..see my post above...Josh is playing Tuesday. He was spectacular last Tuesday. I am always amazed at what a vocalist he is and what a terrific songwriter. He sang a new song that was far better than I expected. LouieB Eleventh Dream Day is a great old band. I hear the Office is a good band too. LouieB

OHHH...in that case you are in for some treats then. I would definitely join some of the gang here on Saturday for the return of The Blacks...at the Empty Bottle. Catch Healthy White Baby and Autumn Defense next weekend at Martyrs. Go just about any night to the Hideout but Devil in a Woodpile plays Tuesdays there. Join us next Tuesday for Von Freeman or go to Josh Caterer's show next Tuesday at Schubas. Look for some of the gigs by Bloodshot Records bands (Waco Brothers, Dollar Store), see Andrew Bird if he ever comes back to a club. Jason Molina is good. There is more fun shit t

Forget that he calls out to the Prime Minister of Britain as if he is Flounder in "Animal House." Thanks for reminding me what a great movie that was.... LouieB

There are tons of great bands in Chicago (does that include Fall Out Boy?? Kanye West???). We have every type of music represented here so listing bands would be pretty hard. Depends on what you like really. How about some genres you like or are we talking only indie rock? LouieB

Actually one would think that the release of a new Golden Smog album would be indicate the longevity of all these artists no matter what their so called genre is. Most of the associated members of Golden Smog could have faded into obsurity by now, but in fact all of them have either prospered or at least survived despite some rather trying times. If anything, twangy music with punk roots is far healthier today than one would have imagined 10 years ago. LouieB

Regarding vinyl..... People here and some of the people we know, even young people dig vinyl IF and only if they want it and know it is still availble and have the same fetish many of us have here about it. The rest of the world believes vinyl disappeared a decade ago and when you inform them that there are still vinyl records they look at you in amazement. LouieB
