  1. I can't really help you out on this, because I have not been to NO of late, but there used to be a store in the French Quarter that specialized in NO type music that was pretty fun. I always found the stores there had pretty high prices. LouieB
  2. I gave this a listen yesterday. It is way better than the last record that's for sure; I can't listen to that one anymore. This one will bear repeated listenings and has some good stuff on it. although another song about the Titanic, not so sure we need one. The tribute to John Lennon is nice though. LouieB
  3. From the merch tent Wilco sounded great, but it was the keyboard band. I don't know if it was intended that way or just the luck of the mix, but little guitar (particularly Nels) projected to the back of the yard. It was nice to see the band members with their kids hanging out much of the day too. LouieB
  4. Thanks. I will. After day two and into day three, it appears things are going to go long. There is no real way to predict these things., IN order to keep it interesting, union is shifting people to some different schools and cutting back on picket lines at local schools. The march downtown yesterday was apparently huge. Now it is just a question of the rank and file (they were a pretty good band) holding steady and not getting discouraged. It is easy to run on adrenaline for the first few days, but the exhaustian and bordom of a long strike can really take its toll. LouieB
  5. Prolly. Who knows. LouieB
  6. Thank goodness. Both sound more fun. LouieB
  7. Spenser goes to a public high school. I am sure if you ask him he will tell you where. its kind of like the location of the Wilco loft, it isn't really a secret. Up to the minute updates - the Local 1 VP is saying they are close. The Pres says they aren't so it is good cop bad cop and I am guessing it is going to be over soon. Oh those bad bad teachers..... LouieB
  8. Nope, I am done. I just spoke to my striking wife. The two issues are recall for laid off teachers and evalluations and there is a possibility it may end soon. I sure hope so for everyone's sake. What won't change is the perception that teachers are greedy, self centered, and selfish. It is okay for the private sector owners and employees to act that way because it is the American way, but teachers who sacifice each day, they get painted in broad strokes (as do all public employees). So it goes. LoiueB
  9. High school age. Time marches on. LouieB
  10. Actually it is. The union is asking for more "wrap around" services for students. The number of social workers per student is unbelievably high, usually 1000 to 1 or more. But as was pointed out, Chicago is broke, so what's to be done? You can't expect teachers to deal with every issue that childrem face coming out of inner-city schools. This is a nationwide problem, not just Chicago. LouieB
  11. Your sincerity is overwhelming. Just because you can't support your opinion don't be pissed at me. Now we have something to talk about. There are certainly two sides to this story and you have pointed out some reasonable sides. You aren't the only one I know who is having a problem with this strike. I had dinner with a friend a couple nights ago who also was having a problem with it. The broke-ness of the city has been taken into consideration and it appears that salary is not a major issue here, although I wouldn't be completely truthful if it wasn't part of it. The teachers did forgo
  12. Wow that's easy and also they lost. I assume you are refering to the one from the Barbara Koppel documentary. How about the other one that was coal miners. It is easy to support losers like the Hormel strikers who make a product no one really cares about like Spam or coal miners, which no one wants to do (and is in an industry which is disappearing), but it takes some chutzpah to criticize teachers, who put it all on the line to work with children and incure the wrath of everyone and still decide to make the hard decision to go out. LouieB
  13. Actually it is NOT a shitshow, but it could have been avoided. What strikes do you agree with? I am sure if an airline goes on strike and keeps you from getting to a destination that would also be a shitshow and avoidable. The Chicago teachers didn't want to strike, but job security is important to them and they felt it was necessary. In fact the legislature made it extra hard for them to go out, with extra timelines, larger majorities, etc, before they walked and the teachers STILL walked. Who's fault is that? edit- Calling a largely female workforce that has been pushed to the brink,
  14. Clearly there is a large philosphical divide in this country between those who think everyone is on their own all the time and those who think that gathering in self help communities can benefit more people. It is the same argument that rages in the presidental campaign and it is not going to be solved in this thread either. If you don't believe that people have the right to collective action based on shared needs and beliefs then all unions are evil. There is no way to win an argument with that position. The unions are certainly on the ropes. Is this good? It depends on your basic phil
  15. My wife is a Chicago Public School teacher and she is a member of the union (you don't have to be a member, but you do have to pay a fee if you are not I believe, that is usually how it works.) The teachers are not striking over pay, although that has not yet been selttled. This is mostly about evaluation and recall for staff laid off from closed schools. There is alot of support for the teachers in Chicago, a town where unions are pretty strong and almost all city employees have a union. This is a tough call, but a strike that will set the tone for many other struggles by teachers across
  16. Its actually both, but money spent on ads does create the impression that the candidate (any candidate, not just the pres) is powerful and has the resources and support to do the job. In campaign after campaign, the more ads and other PR mechanisms do win the day. Needless to say getting the vote out is also important, but frankly doesn't cost the millions that are being raised. Be depressed, be very depressed. LouieB

  18. I wish Glenn would release some of the performances of his longer pieces, such as the one he did already with the Kronos Quartet. Come on Glenn, I would buy it. LouieB
  19. You might want to look completely out of the hip neighborhoods (that includes Wicker Park, Bucktown, Logan Square, Lincoln Square, or even Ravenswood, etc.) and head up to The RP or Uptown or better yet look further out Northwest on the blue line. There are nice places all the way out to and including Jefferson Park. You could try the not quite yet gentrified areas of the southwest side including Pilsen and Bridgeport too. There are plenty of nice, but somewhat boring but cheaper neighborhoods along the orange line between downtown and Midway Airport. You might also look near southside betw
  20. Actually it isn't like that at all. The capital fo Israel is a long term subject that has serious and long term politcal implications for both the State of Israel and a possible Palestinian state. The US has not been involved in negotiating a settlement to the Tibet China conflict for decades, but the US has been involved in the mideast peace talks that long. Mideast peace IS a US priority and will continue to be for any administration., \ The actual seat of government in Israel is Tel Aviv, and most countries have embassies there I believe. Maybe none of this is something that should be
  21. It depends. Some folks feel that it will derail peace talks with the Palestinians. It isn't like the talks are going very well, but there are plenty of people on the right that support a two state solution and Jerusalem is a major sticking point in the negotiations. How is it weird to you? LouieB True but jerking off can be fairly entertaining and feels good. LouieB
