Not funny to Taoists, hippies, and Wilco fans. Maybe mildly funny to others. LouieB

Mostly local governments DO pay for local employees such as these, but special initiatives and grants also pay for them too, particularly teachers. Depending on what kind of teachers there are state and federal grants that do pay for categorical teachers (special ed, bilingual, enrichment, etc.) and in some cases and under some government mandates those teachers salaries are picked up by federal (or state) funds. Fair enough. Let's let agribusiness, energy, highway construction, private education, etc fold.. Fuck it. LouieB

thanks. I was trying to be fair minded though. Heck I don't disagree with this either, but most infrastructure improvement benefits the private sector by giving contracts to the private sector to do the work and the benefits of the work itself. Those bridges, roads, power grids, R&D, etc. don't get built by the government; they get contracted out to the private sector which takes it's cut. I think you really have no idea. See above. Just like with the affordable care act, and just about every other government program, the private sector nearly always makes out like bandits when the

She did Open Mind both times I saw her and sadly she did not put it on her album because Wilco released it this year, so she said. She mentioned that she might put it out as a single later on. I hope she does. Kelly is NOT really much of a songwriter. Only one of the songs on this new album is written by her and it is really good. Her strength is interpreting others; an old and somewhat lost art form. I will have to check her Bloodshot albums but I believe they are also mostly covers of others. Her song selection on this new album is very strong, but she says each of the writers gave her

We agree. It was a dumb thing to say, and Barack realized it pretty quickly. So far Romney has not felt badly about saying that we have too many teachers, police and firefighters. I just find it pretty humorous that folks dis the government and government workers (which is a fairly large number of folks) along with government programs, because the private sector relies on public money ALL THE TIME. There are few businesses that can continue without some sort of subsidy or contracts provided by the government. Nearly every sector and individual that disses government workers and government

Clearly Obama wishes he had not said that, because clearly it is NOT true. Your statement about public workers is somewhat true, so long as you keep in the "somewhat". I know plenty of public workers and none (including myself) have been unscathed. Without the government having created jobs we may still be in the middle of the "great Depression". This is one of those ideological arguments that may never be fully decided I guess. LouieB

I have always thought that the song is about someone who is repressed, not introverted. But who knows? LouieB

Cleary Romney believes there are plenty of teachers, firefighters and police. So let's elect him and have even less. Meanwhile the "job creators" in the corporate world are more interested in keeping their money than hiring people, who might utimately buy more of their goods and services, so one more time, the folks at the top get what they want. People with jobs, buy shit, people without jobs don't. It is fairly simple economics, but it is lost on Romney. Frankly it is lost on alot of people including a whole bunch here. Teachers and other public sector employess buy shit, but they don'

New Neil Young album - with Crazy Horse!
LouieB replied to Vacant Horizon's topic in Someone Else's Song
Have not heard this album, but unless Neil is donating the proceeds to a charity of some sort, this is NOT the same thing. LouieB -
This does not seem to have been mentioned here, but Chicago all star back-up singer Kelly Hogan has a great new solo album out and is now going out on tour both on the east and west coasts (and one midwest date) as openers for three somewhat bigger Chicago artists. I can't say enough good stuff about her new album which has songs from a variety of current artists (and a few older ones) and is really good. After doing three Chicago dates and these tours she is returning to the Hideout on July 22 for a couple shows which are definitely going to sell out. Just thought I would mention all t

Mavis Staples on CBS News Sunday Morning
LouieB replied to Magnetized's topic in Someone Else's Song
Mavis was great at Blues Fest in Chicago last night. She mentioned that she was rejoining the Bonnie Raitt tour after the gig. As usual she was great, although the festival crowd (and it was a crowd) was kind of low energy, being sapped by a weekend worth of music and the heat perhaps (little acknowledgement when it was clear she was going to sing The Weight and none at all when she mentioned Jeff Tweedy of Wilco.) But things did pick up toward the end. Several interesting moments, were singing a verse of Wang Dang Doodle and talking about Koko Taylor, her recognition of the passing of Levo -

Having bought every other Patti Smith album I guess I will get this one at some point. Just Kids is a really great book, but then again it is a really compelling story. LouieB

If you want to see Mavis NOT as an opener, but as a headliner and for FREE, come on to the Chicago Blues Fest on Sunday June 10. LouieB -
Congrats to Bob. LouieB

I guess it is inevitable that the musicians of his generation are passing,, but it is very sad. I saw Doc and Merle a couple times back in the 70s. They were amazing (and I saw them at the amazing Amazingrace). LouieB

Hope you are all relaxing & enjoying Memorial Day!
LouieB replied to kidsmoke's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
The crowd was not a crowd. In fact the pavillion was ridiculously empty but the lawn was reasonable. Everyone played like it was a full house so it was cool. LouieB -
