  1. Oh I dunno, look at a song like "Peace Call", it doesn't seem like typical woody either. Roses is certianly less literal than most of his stuff. If it had a bridge it would be a dead giveaway that it's not a woody song.. Hey Louie what was that Carter book called?
  2. At the folk and roots festival this year there will be a Woody Guthrie Sing-along / Jam on Sunday July 15th @ 1:30 at the Gazebo, maybe some VC folks would be interested in coming out to play. I know some of the Old Town Wilco ensemble folks are on this board, so maybe they had head of it already. The Folk and Roots festival is held in wells park in chicago, here's the official information on it. It a pretty fun event, the Gazebo is actually outside the festival grounds so to come to the Jam is free. http://www.oldtownschool.org/festival/
  3. Ha that didn't quote right, I was trying to agree with the guy who said John Prine and Guy clark. The rest was just an aside.
  4. I love these guys but if i mention them most of the time I get a "who?" I am on a woody guthrie kick right now. As for the 'New-Dylans', why not spend some time with the 'old-dylans', led belly says hi.
  5. It's interesting that each new album tarnishes weezers name that much more in a shorter runtime. I still listen to pinkerton occasionally, that's about it.
  6. that's the same nels shirt from the roo, I'll bet it smells wonderful
  7. SP are a Warner Brothers cash cow, this is likely a studio decision.
  8. I would guess fretboard conditioner is the same substance. you just use a tiny bit on the wood and rub it in good.
  9. The Crying Shame is playing at that on the bob mould stage at like 5, they are good guys.
  10. Yeah but it was in a minstrel show.. oops.
  11. #2 is also Love In Vain, woot. Intrestingly enought track 2 is less 'rockin' than the track 1 but not as laid back as a sweet jane or love in vain.
  12. The real damn shame is that Dixie is such a good song and it's so unplayable without being tarred a southern racist.
  13. I just wipe it with a towel whenever I picke it up, keeps it nice but not shiny. I have been wondering, What do you polish up the frets with? they get dull after a while. Also I'll give the neck a bit of lemon oil when i change the strings.
  14. I really thought Sam had a more complete sound on woman king than previously, I think working with calexico really helped him find a stronger voice. Plus I really liked the In The Reigns album... This could be good.
  15. I got this in the oldtown newsletter today, Perhaps more dates coming but I couldn't find any yet. This show should be good if you liked the pair in the film. The Swell Season Saturday, July 28, 2007 8pm $20 General Public / $18 Members / $16 Seniors & Kids Old Town School Of Folk Music, Chicago The Swell Season is Glen Hansard from the successful Irish pop band the Frames and classically trained Czech vocalist and pianist Marketa Irglova. The two paired up to write a batch of quietly brilliant songs for as well as star in the independent film " Once" which has received vast critical
  16. "Also buried with it were 10 gallons of gasoline
  17. Those McCarthy books are all the rage now that oprah picked up on "The Road". I read all the pretty horses years ago and it was great.
  18. I need to pick some stuff to read on this big flight I'm going on saturday. Any suggestions? I'm currently reading "How Can I keep from singing" about pete seeger, which is pretty good, but I don't want to take it since I've only got like 50 pages left. Books from my shelf that I haven't gotten around to reading yet that I think would be ok are "The Things They Carried" by tim obrien, "The Pawnbroker" by Edward Wallant and "Wigfield" by a bunch of funny guys, "A Change Is Gonna Come: Music, Race & the Soul of America" by someone. Has anyone read any of them?
  19. I like the sea and cake a lot, but it seemed hefty of them to charge $20 at the bottle. Sounds like it was worth it though. I have not gotten to hear the new album yet. When I was in school in indiana I'd love driving around the state roads at night with Oui on repeat.
  20. I thought the decemberists show was free because of the orchestra involvement, but who knows. The last show I saw at that place was Tortise a few years ago, very much an under used venue in my opinion.
  21. That picture of jeff has got a sweet tiger on the guitar.
