Hey, Australians, I see posts on here from you guys occasionally, so thought I'd try. I'm going to Melbourne next month to visit a friend, but due to her university schedule, I'll have the first couple days to myself while she finishes up tests and things, anyway, Anyone have any recommendations on what to do or see in Melbourne? I've never been there before and am super excited about it.

The store manager acted like a total jerk too.

It's from the essay Blues for America by Vonnegut. Google that MF! It's a good read. Although only vaguely about music after the quote..

Subterranean, some sort of benifit, should be a fun show, they rocked it at the hideout block party last summer. http://chicago.ohmyrockness.com/VenueDetail.cfm?VenueID=232

How was shellac? They will be playing with Dianogah next weekend in chicago.

Heck, I love daytrotter because their studio is in the town I grew up in and it boogles my mind to all hell that there is any kind of indie scene there. They should get some kind of key to the city, all I ever got to see was 311 and winger at the state fair. AND Wilco will be playing at the Adler in the Quad Cities so maybe wilco daytrotter session? maybe..

no, just the lead guitar. Does mind your own business have lap steel in it?
-
Maybe pete seeger is rolling over locked in his car.

What is going on in the hank william lead guitar sound on recordings like "Mind your own business"? It's like this really warm plink-plink-plink tone sound, kind of like chet atkins used a lot. Is it the type of guitar, type of amp? I really know not much at all about amps or electrified guitars... I'd like to at lease fake it out with garageband settings or something.

Sometimes in early "april" people are made the "fool"
-
the linup appears to be people they have talked about in their news section lately.... I think fake, but I'd hope not. There's no way Dan Deacon would be a headliner. ah. now it's updated as fake. april fools on the internet is annoying.

Black Star?

John Darnell on black sabbath should be pretty good, you wouldn't guess it from his cannon but that guy loves his metal on his blog. I read the colin meloy one on 'let it be' (replacements) which was pretty good too.

I got my ukelele at cost co for $30. It's fun to play around on and a nice instrument. It's certianly not fancy or professional but solidly constucted worth the price. I think it's a cascade. If you're in chicago, the old town school of folk store has a sizeable selection of ukes at various prices.

Rust Never Sleeps and Tonights the Night probably get the most listens from me. The live at the filmore disc that came out before the massey hall one is quite good too.

The Decemberists: A Practical Handbook
dannygutters replied to Dr. Steve Brule's topic in Someone Else's Song
Oh I dunno if she comes off like that on the dvd, I watched it last night. She just seems to be a concetrated fiddle player. Plus she had just joined on this album/tour, she was probably less comfortable with the catalogue. I suppose biography wise this was a good time to film a dvd, but in my opinion this tour wasn't as good as the one before it or after it, they seemed to be going through growing pains of adapting their pretty intimate show to bigger theaters, now a dvd of them at schubas after her majesty came out would have been sweet. Tho I did like the behind the scenes footage on thi -
What is the significance of noting a martin as pre-war rather than just by year? I've seen that several times when people talk about 00s espessially, I mean is there more to it than noting it's age? "it's old and sounds nice"

Union park is off the green line, near ashland and lake if I recall. Not the best of places to be at night, but ok for the pitchfork festival, tho It's been heckua hot the last 2 years...

I walked out of jenny lewis because I had food poisoning, I threw up behind park west, yay! I also walked out of Dinosaur Jr. the reunion tour a year or so ago, my friend gave me his extra, they were not really my thing. And I fell asleep watching the wayne shorter quartet, I had to review the show for my jazz history class in college but was sick at the time. The parts I saw were good tho..

I have a Larrivee D03 and I love it.
-
They get better every time I've seen them. And the drummer Rachel used to be in the decemberists so you can kind of hear that rythm which is nice.

I saw one on craigslist a couple weeks ago, It was a 65 the guy had no idea what it was and wanted 1k for it. Listed it as a family hand me down "acoustic guitar". Since I didn't have 1k i pointed him to the gibson blue book.. anyway, keep your eyes on craigslist, they pop up once in a while, check out chicago music exchange if you have the money or that vintage guitar place on lincoln near western or really, just buy a new larrivee at the old town school music store yay.

Those in Chicago - Info on UIC?
dannygutters replied to Shorty Long's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
pilsen is cool, but really you could live anywere on the blue line and still be able to get to uic pretty quickly. Assuming you are not there lately... and miss rush hour.. ah just move to pilsen. You can get del rey chips from the factory! they are the best. Also, if you watch the movie 'Stranger than Fiction' much of it is shot at UIC.
