  1. Cool! They might look nice on the mantlepiece, or maybe in the garden.
  2. Small Faces - There Are But Four Small Faces
  3. I must be in the mood for something fun and campy. Nimoy's earnest renderings on some of the covers aren't all that bad, but stuff like Shatner's Mr. Tambourine Man is what makes this record what it is. Some of this stuff has to be heard to be believed. At times it almost leaves me speechless . 01. King Henry The Fifth (William Shatner) 3:02 02. Elegy For The Brave (William Shatner) 3:17 03. Highly Illogical (Leonard Nimoy) 2:20 04. If I Had A Hammer (The Hammer Song) (Leonard Nimoy) 2:11 05. Mr. Tambourine Man (William Shatner) 2:51 06. Where Is Love (Leonard Nimoy) 2:01 07. 4. What a fantastic and surreal trip.
  5. I think it was the mention of Mongo that set me on an Fela Kuti Afro-Beat tangent.
  6. I saw that film at a festival last year and loved it. A really touching film. Richard Jenkins was quite wonderful in it.
  7. I threw him into the mix as he's touched upon Tropicalia in some of his music, but yeah, in general I wouldn't classify him in that genre either. Oh yeah, Mongo Santamaria. I like him too. I should really get a few more records of his. And going off the path even further, I do like quite a bit of Fela Kuti's stuff too.
  8. I got his ep a while back which was good, but this one is a leap forward indeed; a real breath of fresh air in the often stifling world of new music.
  9. Another case of Spam & Run... quelle suprise .
  10. Like you guys have already mentioned, Gilberto Gil and Tom Z
  11. I don't think T.Rex and New York Dolls have anything to worry about. Like others, I don't hear any Glam in this tune either. It's an energetic tune but I don't find it all that memorable or lyrically interesting. I think I actually prefer Talk Dirty to Me by Poison to this .
  12. I would start with Twice Removed and One Chord to Another. Those are 2 of their best right there. A Sides Win: Singles 1992-2005 would be a good place to go for an overview of their work.
  13. They should have used Otis Day & The Knights in that film.
  14. I love that song, and those strings, simply sublime--Noel plays a mean violin, even if he's not a girl .
  15. I heard the story about this song ages ago and for some reason made the assumption that Noel was a woman. Now I know better .
  16. Can't seem to stay away from the Scott Walker records lately.
  17. "O, Dana" - Big Star "Stroke It Noel" - Big Star "Caroline and I" - Go-Betweens "Sweet Jane" - Velvet Underground "Mary Jane" - The Vulgar Boatmen "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" - Prince
  18. Reading your post just about made me weep. I'm sending some positive vibes your way, sounds like you could use some.
  19. A recent song that pops to mind is Steve Earle's Tennessee Blues: Sunset in my mirror, pedal on the floor Bound for New York City and I won
