  1. It's in my Top 10 or 20 of all-time too. There's so much emotion, depth, and tension conveyed with nary an intertitle in sight, and the breathtaking cinematography still manages to stun. There were some really cutting edge film techniques used in this one at the time, like the "invisible" tracking shots and in camera double exposure shots. This is a film I could never tire of watching.
  2. The depths of man's darkness to the highs of love are all explored in this majestic film. One of the best silent films I've ever seen.
  3. I'm a fan of Van's, particularly the first 5 or 6 records. Some really wonderful stuff there. p.s. I'd say Otis, Marvin, Curtis, Mavis and Aretha are pretty soulful too... and that's just for starters .
  4. Kiss - Alive II - This was one of the first records I ever bought with my own money, and it started me wanting to be a guitarist, though at the time all I could get my hands on was an air guitar. Around this time I also started listening to Led Zeppelin and The Who. Those early records bonded early friendships. The Replacements - Let It Be - Showed me that a band really could do whatever they felt like on a record. You could careen all over the place from punk-rockers to heart-on-sleeve ballads, it didn't matter as long as you meant it. "Tim" and "Pleased to Meet Me" solidified things fo
  5. A pre Six Feet Under Lauren Ambrose giving a fine performance in this coming of age story.
  6. That's the first one that popped into my head too. I'd have to think hard to come up with one that could top it.
  7. A top-notch film noir about a social climbing killer.
  8. I remember seeing these guys many years ago in Toronto on a bill with Ron Hawkins and the Rusty Nails, and Jim Bryson. I loved them (and Jim) so much that I ended up picking up "Left and Leaving" and the first Bryson CD after the show. I'm still a fan of both... Anyhow, the new one has really grown on me with successive listens. I can't help but smile every time I hear those curling metaphors used to describe the narrators failings in life and love in "Tournament of Hearts." Even the spoken word tribute to Gump Worsley isn't without it's charms. Like other Weakerthans records, this one
  9. Great band. Fantastic songwriting. What's not to like? I probably have about 10 records of their's, usually one gets in the rotation when I need some inspiration.
  10. Some really stunning images in this one.
  11. I quess the record company was looking to promote Wilco, and illegal copying/downloading. Definitely looks like a paid product placement there .
  12. Not every piece of music used in a TV show is placed there by advertisers, believe it or not. If the use of Wilco was an intentional marketing ploy they would've used something from the current record don't you think, not something from their least popular first record. Also, the use of a Replacements song, a band that isn't even around anymore can't possibly be seen as something stemming from a marketing deal, or maybe I missed something.
  13. Roky Erickson & the Aliens
  14. I saw an episode of this show a while back that used The Replacements "Skyway." Someone on the show must have good musical taste, and a bit of sway.
  15. Most important and influential band in rock, yes! My favorite band, not quite, but up there.
  16. Revisited this film the other day: Kwaidan is a great film. I got my hands on the Eureka edition a while back which is definitely superior to the Criterion version (better image & extras, plus it has the complete film; the Criterion is missing 20+ minutes.)
  17. I bought the 2-disc Rhino reissue a while back and highly recommend it. The bonus disc has The Alternate Slider ("Rabbit Fighter") which gives you various working takes, acoustic demos, etc... pretty great stuff.
  18. My favorite is "The Slider" but you can't go wrong with any of the suggestions made so far.
  19. Interesting bit of back and forth there. Overall I definitely have to side with Matt, it sounds like he did nothing to warrant such a response.
  20. An Irish Pub in Chicago, that should help narrow things down . At least you didn't say Boston...
