  1. Oh yeah, that was a great one! I love a lot of the stuff from that era: The Omega Man, Soylent Green, Solaris, Logan's Run.... Not as much great sci-fi in the '80s, but there were a few gems like The Quiet Earth and Blade Runner.
  2. I remember that one, Blythe Danner was in it if I recall. Not as good as the first one, but I'm a sucker for '60s-'70s sci-fi, so it was still passable in my books
  3. Set in New York's late '70s music scene, looks very promising. Watched a couple of episodes of the new Denis Leary show "Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll," very underwhelming. I hope this new one will redeem things as far as music/rock based shows go.
  4. Very well done. Recognized all the covers but the Ringo one. Was happy to see a nod to Nilsson Schmilsson in there.
  5. After Jeff, Glenn is the MVP of the group as far as I'm concerned. John would get the runner-up spot.
  6. Edwin Birdsong - What It Is (1972)
  7. Been catching up on the new series Humans over the past week. One of the best new shows of the year so far. Also been binging on Friday Night Lights, a show I only sporadically caught when it originally aired. This one has really sucked me in with its realistic portrayal of relationships and small town life. Yeah, I liked this one too overall, despite the annoying plot holes, and the whole zombie-esque outliers thing that is such an overused trope these days.
  8. It's a staring contest, in a hall of mirrors
  9. Prince has done some great solos. The solo in Purple Rain or I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man are right up there for me too, any of those could easily make my list Oh yeah. Richard Thomspon is another one that should be on my list too.
  10. Not my definitive list, but some that pop to mind: Steely Dan - Kid Charlemagne (Larry Carlton) - A masterclass in taste and melody. Cheap Trick - I Want You to Want Me [live] (Rick Neilsen) - love all the fills and solos in this one. The Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil (Keith Richards) - Jumps out of the speakers and grabs me every time. Big Star - September Gurls (Alex Chilton) - Simple, melodic and perfect for the song. Funkadelic - Maggot Brain (Eddie Hazel) - So much feeling and emotion. The Only Ones - Another Girl, Another Planet (John Perry) - Just another one of those that f
  11. The dude is pretty consistent, another strong record. I like how he's used little between song segues to make the album flow together nicely. Not sure where'd I'd rank this compared to his other releases yet, but it's a worthy addition to the catalog for sure.
  12. Was my first spin of this one. Listened while making dinner. Pretty enjoyable country record, gonna return to this one for sure. Ry Cooder produced and plays guitar on it, and there are appearances by members of My Morning Jacket, Dawes and Punch Brothers for what it's worth. p.s. thanks for the kind words, the feeling is mutual.
  13. Also been spinning Wilco, Jason Isbell and Tame Impala today.
  14. So many things that can make a musician great. Here's a few that pop to mind: - The ability to play the right thing at the right time, whether that be a chord, a single note, silence... - Along the same lines, the ability to put the song first, adding what it needs, not what your ego needs. - Having a unique and distinct voice on your instrument. - Able to play with feeling and emotion. - Open mindedness and an adventurous spirit. - Eclectic tastes in music.
  15. Reykjavik is a good homebase, lots to do and see around the southern portion of the country. There's a few good day trips you can do relatively nearby: Blue Lagoon (Pretty much a must visit. This is quite close to the KeflavĂk airport. We went to these hot springs shorly after arriving. Perfect way to relax after a long flight.) Gullfoss & Geysir Hot Springs (Iceland's Niagara Falls & Old Faithful. They're fairly close together, definitely a must see.) Skogafoss / Reynisfjara (Another worthy sidetrip to see more of Iceland's natural beauty.) And of course Reykjavik has enough stuff
  16. I've been working on a bunch of songs. I don't think I'm prolific, but I keep writing new songs, and can't seem to ever catch up on recording the older ones. Anyhow, right now I'm working on 3 different songs in the studio: one banjo based one--think more Neil Young's Old Man than some sorta Flatts & Scruggs deal--another one is built around a bouzouki part, and finally one that is more of a melodic guitar-centric thing. I'm kinda toggling between the songs depending on my mood. The last two days I've been working on the banjo song, just came up with a possible bridge section last night, a
  17. Yeah, I recall seeing a couple TV biopics for them over the years. I think One was "Summer Dreams" and another I recall was "The Beach Boys: An American Dream." Also seen a bunch of Beach Boys docs over the years. Watched one a few months back called The Beach Boys and Satan. It mostly focuses on the Beach Boys, the satan part being a brief tangent about the whole Manson thing.
  18. That is fantastic. You're going late enough that you'll probably be able to do the Iceland interior. That was the one thing we missed out on going in June, our excursion got cancelled due to road conditions. It turned out okay as we ended up doing a trip to the Westman Islands instead, which was quite interesting (it was the site of a massive volcano eruption in the early '70s, you can still see homes half buried by molten lava there.) How long are you going for? Are you getting a car there? If you're driving around the country, get readly for some beautiful and harrowing drives, especiall
  19. I quite liked it, I'd give it an 8 out of 10. I was unsure about the John Cusack casting choice, but he acquitted himself well for a guy who frankly doesn't resemble Wilson at all. Paul Dano as the younger Wilson on the other hand, is convincing in look and manner, giving his scenes a more Wilson-esque feel. I particularly loved the Pet Sounds/Smile era scenes. Paul Giamatti as the dispicable Dr. Eugene Landy is also quite good here. Admittedly I'm a big enough of a Beach Boys fan that this had my name all over it, but I think this film would be enjoyable even for non-fans.
  20. I spent 2 weeks in Iceland with a brief side trip to Greenland. Iceland was beautiful: waterfalls and natural hot springs everywhere, glaciers, volcanoes, friendly people... We drove around the country and fell in love with the place. Another thing I enjoyed was the wide open spaces with nobody around for miles: we were the only people at a few sites we visited. It was also nice being able to sightsee very late in the evening due to the seemingly neverending light during the summer days. I would definitely go back if I had a chance. What I saw of Greenland was very cool too. We did a dog sle
