  1. But again, what does that matter? Maybe it is a good thing. Maybe every time there is some little skirmish half way around the world we won't have to use our money and our solider's lives to stop it. Maybe it is time we stopped being the policemen of the world and become the neighbors and maybe the rest of the countries will realize we are in the shit all together and the US is not there to always help.
  2. Wow, I guess I am in the minority here thinking this album is Neko's absolute best work. It is densely layered and exceedingly dark without succumbing to its own weight. I found an interesting article, not so much about the album (though there is a review at the end), but about the new alt-folk bands that have been popping up in the last couple of years (Avett Bros, Mumford and Sons, Lumineers, etc.) and what they can do to learn from acts like Neko Case and Richard Buckner. Interesting read http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/music_box/2013/09/the_lumineers_and_mumford_sons_what_they_c
  3. I trust in Gilligan, that is for sure. I can't think of one bad episode.
  4. That is way, way too much to cram in 3 freaking episodes. There is just too much tension between Hank and Walt to let it end with him dying in the shoot out. Also Todd has become too interesting for him die as well, there is too much between him and Lydia. But Gomie is gone for sure, as well as Uncle Nazi and Devil from Justified. Jessie makes out as well. But ends up on the run thinking everyone else is dead. But I cannot wrap my head around anything else. I mean there are only 3 freaking episodes left. I just hope they wrap everything up and don't have a cop out ending.
  5. to paraphrase Colbert, if we cared about killing people with conventional weapons we would have done something about Chicago. Other countries kill innocent civilians all the time. Yet there is little we do or even hear about. If your sole reason for bombing their asses is killing civilians we would have to bomb most of Africa and half of Asia.
  6. I don't trust Russia or Putin, getting all the chemical weapons out of Syria is an impossibility (especially in the middle of a civil war). But bombing them would be ineffective and received poorly around the world, especially now that there a diplomatic option out there. Why does the US have to be the policeman of the World? Why can't we follow the Jeffersonian model where out national well being is more important than that of other countries.
  7. So I'll try to shift the conversation again. Anyone care about Syria? There was a major shift in how PBO is dealing with Syria and a major difference in the speech he was to give and the speech he gave Tuesday night. Do you think the Diplomacy angle will work? Are you glad we are going towards diplomacy rather than bombing Syria? What do you think about Russia's end game in all this? What about Putin's op-ed? Just wondering.
  8. Miracle Day is not very good. The series is good but a tad uneven. Children of Earth is really good, but hard to follow if you are not familiar with the series.
  9. While we are complaining about George Zimmerman (regardless of what you think the Martin shooting, Zimmerman seems like a pretty horrible person and not someone I want to waste anymore of my time thinking about), the GOP is at again. They want to use the Debt ceiling as a bargaining chip in their fight to end the Affordable Care Act. http://thehill.com/blogs/on-the-money/budget/321491-house-gop-struggles-to-sell-obamacare-plan-to-conservatives Playing with the full faith and credit of the United States because of a bill they don't like.
  10. Clearly this proves his wife is an idiot, I mean you gotta have your settings turned to automatically save any video you take to iCloud. If you don't you will lose incriminating evidence of your husband threatening your ass.
  11. Thanks for that, I didn't recall any of it. But it should be pointed out that not one of the people mentioned in that op-ed is the sitting governor of one of the largest states in the union. That just brings it to a whole new level.
  12. Really you remember it form both parties? Maybe it is the age of the internet where every thing is magnified and tweeted and debated and so on and so forth, and the fact it was 13 years ago. But when GWB one in a pretty contentious election in 2000 I don't recall anyone calling for secession. Democrats where pissed but I don't think anyone called for secession. Rick Perry, the governor of Texas and a former presidential candidate, at least considered or mentioned the talk of secession. http://blog.chron.com/texaspolitics/2009/04/perry-says-texas-can-leave-the-union-if-it-wants-to/. 13. I for one wish George Zimmerman would sit back and be quite. You would think he would be. But this incident, compounded with others in his past kinda shows that George was not as innocent as he claimed to be. I fully believe that Martin was assaulting Zimmerman and the shooting was justified. However I believe that Zimmerman provoked Martin into a confrontation. This current action adds more fuel to that theory.
  14. I have never claimed to prove his motive, remember Crow himself claimed there was no vocal opposition and already knew the answers to why not. He had a preconceived narrative in his mind to make a larger point about the President. He notion was wrong. I wasn't trying to prove his motive, I was showing that the central tenant of his argument is wrong. He wanted to know where the opposition was, I provided links to do so. I am taking the First Lady's statement in the context of Syria. You are taking it out of context and applying it to wars in general. You can draw two differe
  15. Of course she would answer yes. If the war is justified and necessary. Apparently she does think that way. Though these were not public statements, just a comment from her husband. It is a pretty big deal. You didn't see comments like this about Laura Bush, Barbra Bush, Nancy Regan, etc. And I wanted to point out this comment to refute Crow's comment about being no vocal anti-war voices out there. Which just proves he wanted to push a narrative rather than look at facts.
  16. Speaking of HuffPo saw this: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/09/michelle-obama-syria_n_3896436.html When was the last time a first lady voiced her opposition like this?
  17. http://news.yahoo.com/looming-syria-vote-prompts-protests-220155225--politics.html Or is it that you have a preconceived narrative in your head and don't bother to take a look and find the answer.
  18. I must admit, IRDB, had a pretty salient point, which was unfortunately overshadowed by whatever craziness went around his postings. There are major voices on the right, not necessarily party leadership, but prominent voices that have said some pretty out there things about the President and Democrats. These things are tinged with racism, and pure misinformation. Now, people on this board have gone so far as disavow or refute much of what is said from these people. But the point is there are some (I would go so far and say many) conservatives who listen, believe and support these out th
  19. Al-Qaeda is a significant in numbers, but they are whackos who subvert religion to justify killings. The only difference between them and people who bomb an abortion clinic is numbers. I am really not sure of why or to what point you are asking this. Is it purely academic? Or is it there a larger idea at hand?
  20. I am wonder that as well. In Atticus' original question he asked: Which actually begs the larger question when has any government or significant entity (ie not a whacko splinter group) killed a number of persons overtly in the name of any religion. You could quickly point to 9/11 but Bin Laden said himself the bombings were because of the support of Israel, religious in nature, but not in the name of a religion. And one could argue that was a whacko splinter group as well. As are most of the terrorist groups. Really has there been any purely religious wars since the crusades?
  21. That is insane. Especially if it is true.
  22. politics is a bitch, it really gets in the way of good governance.
  23. Well it appears that this Syria thing has gotten real interesting. Now that PBO has gone to congress to get approval for military action it looks like he won't get it. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/05/syria-vote_n_3873801.html Which is interesting for several reasons. Several GOP members who voted for Iraq are now not going to vote for Syria. The reasonable person in me says they have looked at the facts and have realized action against Syria is not a good idea. However the cynic in me looks at this congress (whose sole purpose at time is to make PBO look weak) and thinks they
  24. I haven't seen the episode in years, but I could have sworn they glowed.
  25. if this were mid last season or early this season I would say yes. But there is too much stuff to get through in only 3 episodes. Also I am not wild about a flashback, either.
