word. agree with you 100% on that! regardless of whose songs anyone prefers, the band was certainly at it's best from '01 to '07

Zip City = one of the best songs in the history of rock music? sorry, we'll have to agree to disagree there, as that's not even remotely close to a favorite DBT song (maybe top 15 though, it's definitely in my top 3 Cooley songs, no doubt) as for Isbell only writing 8 Truckers songs, all by himself... yes, but he also had input on quite a handful of other DBT songs over the course of the 3 albums he appeared on. and the difference in their live shows from before he joined compared to when he was in the band, was night and day for me. I thought they were a pretty decent live act before, b

fair enough... i've always though Cooley had a ton of Charlie Daniels influence in his songwriting, going back to when i first got into DBT in '00 *shrug* i like Cooley, but he's definitely my 3rd favorite DBT songwriter. i still like the band a lot, but they lost a lot of appeal for me without Isbell

their songwriting is often very similiar in terms of styles & topics imo, especially Cooley's solo songs (if you've ever seen him or heard recordings)

i think the conclusion most people i know have been coming to, regardless of how they put it, is "well... it doesn't suck as band as St. Anger and is the best thing they've done post-Black album at least". it seems like somewhat damning praise
-
first half is typical 90's sounding Metallica (especially James' vocals), the last 1/3 or so gets down to business and is pretty reminiscent of Puppets/Justice-era but that said, the song feels thrown together and kind of haphazard, plus the lyrics are pretty crap in spots. certainly better than the shit that was St. Anger, and the last 1/3 is better than anything post Black Album, but still far from great. as for the production, Lars' drum sound (the snare especially), still sounds pretty poor (not as horrible as St. Anger's at least tho)

yeah... i dig it a good amount right now, but i can see myself getting tired/worn out by it after a few weeks or so... Of Montreal's records always have a pretty short shelf life with me though to be perfectly honest
-
it sucks that they've had to resort to Rovian-esque negative campaigning, but we learned from '04 you can't just sit back and take it like Kerry did

First Ave is an all GA club

Obama really really really needs to make an Ad out of this comment, and if not, some other group: wow... *shakes head*
-
Chet Edwards? really? :/
-
yep. one of my fave songs of the year so far... has a definite 'Off The Wall' vibe
-
ok... not really... just the first track (single?) released from the record, Golden Age this JUST might be my favorite song of 2008... at the very least it's gonna be a late entry to my summer jam there's some 'Off The Wall' type shit going on here... looooooooove it. the horns especially http://www.tvontheradio.com

SO crazy... and awesome as for Blood Bank, didn't get a definitive answer whether or not it'll be saved for a new full length or a possible EP in between, sounded like it's still up in the air
-
could just go to First Ave friday night and get them? or are you not in town?
-
god i wish i could have gone to this festival... Jackson Hole is prolly my favorite place on earth... haven't been there for a while either
-
yeah, Bob and Lisa's Birthday are terrible. i'm guessing Liz just doesn't dig on Cooley's type of songwriting, which i can understand honestly. He reminds me of Charlie Daniels more than anyone. edit: p.s. got my tix for both nights @ First Ave
-
by my count, they've released 4, maybe 5, truly great songs post '00, so they've got their work cut out for them.
-
while i agree it was better than anything on that record, i still am not expecting too much... it's just been far too long since U2 has made a truly great album to keep a ton of hope alive
-
not at all actually... lotta crossover
-
great show in Mpls on Fri too...
-
good album, just not a great album, nor one of the years best for me... and i'm as big of MMJ fanboys as they come solid 7/10 for me
-
new Byrne/Eno record... damn this thing is good so far... was NOT expecting a pop record at all
-
i figured there was no way in HELL this would come to Minneapolis, since both bands have been here twice this year already, but 2 nights at First Ave???? holy shit.
