  1. it wasn't BAD, just not a single album that i'd score a 9+ for is all. best years of the 00's for me: 2002, 2004, 2003, 2007, 2001... lower end 2000, 2006, 2005, 2008, 2009
  2. looking back on my EOY lists trying to come up with my fave albums of the 00's... 2009 might be my least favorite year for new music :-/ i don't think a single album on my list this year will make my top 50 of the 00's even. a lot of very good records, but no real amazing albums for me.
  3. i made the change before i went to bed last night at 2:30 and figured it would have propagated by like 6-7am, but for some reason not all of the changes stuck. looks like we're back now though thanks!
  4. confirmed http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/12/25/vic-chesnutt-singer-dies/
  5. Broken Bells (Dangermouse + James Mercer) this is a pretty cool/chill record
  6. only on my 4th listen... but so far this just isn't really doing it for me (Van Occupanther was my #2 album of 2006), especially since it took 3 years for it to come out. it's certainly gorgeous, but there's not any really great or overly memorable melodies for me yet. not to mention there's hardly ANY shift in tempo or tone throughout the record, which doesn't allow any singular song to stand out. it's like an album full of 7's for me atm. i mean Trials was pretty mellow save for a couple songs, but this is a lot mellower on the whole than that record was even. hoping it grows on me, but
  7. ditto... not really sure what to think yet
  8. it's from the 7th Street Entry i think and yeah, they are a total blast live... Laura especially has the timing of a finely tuned robot, she's a blast to watch
  9. thanks guys!!! it's been a pretty good year, but i'm looking forward to 2010
  10. this album was self-released earlier this year but now that their album is getting a proper label re-release in February and they'll likely be touring the US soon, thought i'd suggest that people check 'em out. they're a boyfriend/girlfriend duo from Minneapolis while it's "lo-fi" per-se, it's not grating like some lo-fi records as of late have been and the vocals are still very present in the mix. plus for me they have a much better sense of melody than a lot of lo-fi acts. http://www.myspace.com/redpensband my favorite songs on the record are Baby Alligator, Hung Out, Street Issu
  11. have you read the backstory on it? makes it even more intense
  12. ah... yeah an in-store would def be kinda weird for them. they had the lighting super dark and moody at my show, it definitely added to it. as for a drum machine live... hey also played percussion at our show too, in addition to the drum machine. i do think they'd have been better as a 4-piece before the other member left though.
  13. you can thank Donna for that!!! nice work
  14. while i like most of the albums in their top 10, their list (top 10 esp) this year was even more predictable than usual. i guessed all but 1 album correctly (Raekwon)
  15. i really dug them live. if you go to a show and need a band to jump around or have witty banter to be entertained, i can see not liking their live show, but it was so moody and ethereal, loved it. the album is a bit overrated in some circles (was shocked it was Pfork's #3), but it's def one of the best debuts of the year
  16. i didn't care for it unfortunately while Title TK wasn't great either, i liked it a lot better
  17. i'm sure it'll come out eventually, but from a friend of a friend (who told me about it before i read this thread last evening)... heard he OD'd
  18. i revisited the Georgie James record this morning... while i may have spoke a bit prematurely (forgot just how great Places was), it's still very VERY good and obvious who had the biggest hand in the songwriting on the Georgie James album.
  19. i know mjpuzcko digs this too, but imo this might even be better than the Georgie James record...
  20. the way their lead singer reacted to and commented on my friends review (and my comment) of their lackluster Mpls show last month leads me to believe that he's got a lot of maturing to do in general: http://www.culturebully.com/girls-7th-st-entry-live-review-11-14-2009 he = chrissybaby4ever (it's him too, that's his YouTube handle and on a few other sites) neither my friends review, nor my comment were all that negative either... dude obviously needs to get thicker skin and/or not read shit about his band on the internet, it never ends well.
  21. i know right?? it'll be on mjpuzcko's list too i'd imagine, so there's FOUR! yeah, i did hear they're hoping to book a tour leading up to and following SXSW. here's hoping they're able to get hooked up with some good shows. as far as the St. Paul show you saw... depends. i've seen them pack them in at the Turf, but they do best at the Triple Rock usually, depending on the bill. but on their own unfortunately they don't sell out too big of places here (yet). it's unfortunate, as they put on a killer live show too.
