Great LPs with crappy openers
PopTodd replied to tinnitus photography's topic in Someone Else's Song
Beastie Boys - "To All the Girls" (Paul's Boutique) Although, to be fair, while it isn't much of a song, per se... it does set the stoner kinda mood for the record. So: crappy song as an opener, but it works in it's own way. (I always kinda consider "Shake Your Rump" to be the real first song on the album, anyway. And that would qualify as one of the BEST.) -

Winston, Supposedly it was written at a time where the guys in the band were getting kinda pissed at Brian Epstien for some of his shadier business practices. Or at least for some of his posturing. Not sure if it's true, but that's the legend. (Supposedly the original title of the song was "Baby, You're a Rich Fag Jew". Again, not sure if that's true or not, but that's the legend.) Lyrics:

Not sure if it's about getting screwed, but it is certainly done with tongue firmly in cheek. "I Love My Label" - Nick Lowe

A friend of mine was talking about getting screwed by a website elsewhere, and that he wrote a song about it. That sparked me to thinking about other songs on the same topic; and these came to mind: "Baby You're a Rich Man" - The Beatles "The Compromise" - The Format And, I know that there are many others. Might make for a good mix. Can you help me out?

It was on Night Music, a late-night music show hosted by David Sanbourn in the late 80's and early 90's. A great show that went away too soon.

I was a kid. I think that it just enthralled me that I had, in my possession, something that was once in the possession of somebody that I admired. And, even if it was just a slip of paper, nonetheless, it bore their signature, as proof that they did, in fact, possess it. Now, I am not so much into the autograph thing. But, when I was a kid, that was pretty much the appeal: made me feel a little closer to these folks.

I guess you could say that playing music/writing songs is my #1 hobby. (Although I think that it probably goes beyond that.) Also: Cooking I used to collect autographs. Some of my more-prized ones: Bill Cosby, Joe Walsh, Roald Dahl, Ernie Banks, Gayle Sayers, Walter Payton, Steve Morse

I got the disc and listened to it today. It's a helluva accomplishment! The songs are excellent and there is a great feel on there of some CSN/Grateful Dead/Wilco/Son Volt/Jayhawks, etc... Basically, yeah a solid Americana thing happening. I like the tunes and there is also some excellent guitar playing. How did you meet your collaborator? Oh, and also, on my record, I had some folks from far away record their bits without ever seeing them face-to-face. The internet is a beautiful thing, like that.

Anyone have a copy of this that they would like to trade for something else? I see used copies at Amazon, but am not quite trusting the sources there. If anyone wants to do a straight-up, disc-for-disc trade, let me know. I would really love to get this sucker into my collection. Thanks!

How do you buy music? (isues, quality, quantity)
PopTodd replied to Vacant Horizon's topic in Someone Else's Song
Totally. But, when I love something, I need to own the physical product. And, even a burned CD isn't enough... I need the original. (I re-bought a couple of CDs that I had burns of, just because I loved them so much. And, then I gave away the burns to friends that I thought might like them.) -
"Happy When It Rains" - Garbage and... "All the Umbrellas in London" - Magnetic Fields "1000 Umbrellas" - XTC
