  1. I am now in the middle of making a "Fuck You Songs" mix. Just adding: "Guts" - John Cale
  2. I saw him at Alpine Valley, not at his last show but the night before (it was a 2-night stand). I got back to my room at college to a message on my answering machine from my friend with whom I attended the show. The first one said that there was a 'copter crash and that it was feared that Eric Clapton was dead. The second message, his voice was a little shakier: "Clapton is not dead, but Stevie is." I fell onto my couch and just sat there for a couple of minutes. Stunned.
  3. I think that most of us welcome them. Nonetheless, I think that this member of the opposition party and what he had to say about Teddy is what really got me. LINK
  4. I'll Be Gone (by Papas Fritas) Don't lie when I ask how you're feeling I can read your mind Second thoughts have come across so clear In your eyes Outside, in the car, in the kitchen There's nothing left to say Eternity gets a little shorter everyday And for a while We couldn't pretend But no denial Could start things over again The road goes on forever The days fade into the night We're not walking together And now I'm feeling alright Forget all the things that I told you Whispers in the dark It's all in vain 'cause everything we had just fell apart Three weeks seems so long when t
  5. I thought of another one: "Radio" - Rancid Probably my #1 "crank it" tune, actually.
  6. Pretty much. Although, everyone in my family does try to take spiders on a piece of paper and release them out the front door, whenever we can. As to going out of our way to kill a bug. Never. Unless it's a roach. Thankfully, I haven't seen any of those fuckers in a long time. EDIT: And, I take care of my family first. Before any bugs, thank you.
  7. I saw some chatter about this topic, whilst lurking about at Chatzy and thought it might make for some interesting discussion/lists here at the board. Usually they seem to be something from your teenage years or childhood that bring back memories of cruising with your friends or whatever. So, if they're kinda cheesy picks, that's to be expected, I suppose. So, what be they? Me (I got 12 that I can think of off the top of my head): "Everybody's Got Something to Hide (Except for Me and My Monkey)" - The Beatles "You've Got Another Thing Coming" - Judas Priest "Shake Your Rump" - Beastie Bo
  8. Just added this to the playlist for the day: Shoes - Present Tense Never actually listened to these guys, but it seems like I should; seems right up my alley. Plus, they're a bunch of Chicago (Zion, actually) dudes. I'll check back in with my remarks after a first listen.
  9. Macy Gray - The Id Papas Fritas - Buildings & Grounds Wilco - Wilco (the album) various artists - Wayne Kramer Presents: Beyond Cyberpunk
  10. Oh yeah. Saw them a couple of times, even. Once at the club that was owned by Sue Miller (Tweedy) -- Lounge Ax. And again at another small club in Chicago. Also, Radiator is my favorite album of theirs and one of the best of the 90's, IMO.
  11. It's not their best albums, by any means. Although "Country Girl" and "Love Song" are both pretty excellent tunes. If you're looking for the best Brinsleys stuff for your collection, you really need these: And this is one of my favorite live documents ever:
  12. Another South American one: Timbalada (Brazil) insanely great percussion
  13. I can't believe that I have yet to see: "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better" - The Byrds Stone. Cold. Classic.
  14. A few more: S. America: Os Mutantes (Brazil) Café Tacuba (Mexico) Beto Villares (Brazil) Léo Lago (Brazil) Africa: Caesaria Evora (Cape Verde) David Broza (Israel) Asia: Cornelius (Japan) Ravi Shankar (India) And I'll second: Tom Zé, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Fela Kuti, Shonen Knife
  15. The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man The Move - The Best of The Move Super Furry Animals -Radiator Super Furry Animals - Outspaced Brinsley Schwarz - Brinsley Schwarz/Despite it All
  16. But the one that gets under your skin the most. It can be a horror movie, but isn't necessarily so... M The 1933 Fritz Lang masterpiece about the Child Murderer of Düsseldorf. It wasn't only creepy on the surface -- with Peter Lorre at his most leering and toad-ish, as a molester/murderer, but the way the film was structured anticipated/predicted the rise of Fascism in post-WWI Germany. Creepy on so many levels. Freaks You know, it's about circus freaks. And stars real circus freaks. That's creepy.
  17. Great pick. I have a couple more: Johnny & June Carter Cash - "Jackson" We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout, We've been talkin' 'bout Jackson, ever since the fire went out. I'm goin' to Jackson, I'm gonna mess around, Yeah, I'm goin' to Jackson, Look out Jackson town. Well, go on down to Jackson; go ahead and wreck your health. Go play your hand you big-talkin' man, make a big fool of yourself, You're goin' to Jackson; go comb your hair! Honey, I'm gonna snowball Jackson. See if I care. When I breeze into that city, people gonna stoop and bow. (Hah!) All them wom
  18. You answered your own question. Also, try imagining any of those songs without Ringo or George. Bottom line is, it took 4 to make The Beatles. NONE of them alone did anything even close to approaching what they did together. The closest we got to The Beatles from the various solo projects is: George - All Things Must Pass John - Imagine Paul - Band on the Run But even those amazing albums pale in comparison to even the weakest of The Beatles' offerings.
  19. I've come to love this album: AllMusic review:
