  1. Saw the guys last night in Columbia MO. For someone who has only seen the later Jayhawks live, it was a nice evening to hear the earlier stuff live (esp in a stripped down setting). They played most of the new album with about 6 old Jayhawks tunes, one song off of Rainy Day, and one cover of I Still Miss Someone. Solid night, sounded great. I will note however that Mark Olson isn't much of a picker. Gary is a talent on guitar, but didn't know Mark was just an average player.
  2. Just my two cents after one fresh spin (take this with a grain of salt). With the exception of the song Hold Time (which is the best song I've heard all year easy). I felt specially the second half became way too samey. On past albums there was nice mix of delicate acoustic numbers, old timey and his strumming shuffle numbers. This albums has alot of stummy shufflers that don't appear to stand out. Pretty great descriptions huh? It just hasn't grabbed me like hearing Poison Cup or Hi Fi or Fuel For Fire or vincent o brien. Anyway, maybe it is just the first listen blues. That being sai
  3. Man you guys are tough! Granted I'm nothing close to a die hard Jayhawks fan. I own everyting they have done, but I never lived and breathed them. I really got interested around Sound of Lies and Smile. I know that is bass ackwards. Anyway, I think Sound of Lies is really strong when you dive into it, and I'm not sure what stupid lyrics piss you off, but there are no new Son Volt Jay Farrar stupid lyrics on there IMHO. Also Ten Little Kids is sweet and playful. Cmon guys, it's only rock and roll. I kid, OH, the new album was meant to be a Simon and Garfunkel type thing and so it is quit
  4. Just wanted to share with you all, that along with my normal resolutions of continuing to be a better human being and avoid any disgusting habits a new resolution I threw in there this year was to by all new albums on vinyl only this year. I went back through my last years purchases and realized that with a few exceptions, they were all available on vinyl and the majority came with a free CD copy or download voucher. I may pay more in shipping, but at least I won't be buying the same album twice, which i sometimes end up doing if I really dig the cd version. I feel better that I shared.
  5. Going to see the guys tomorrow night here in Columbia Missouri. From recent reviews I'm pretty excited and I enjoy the new record (actually think it could be a great album if you cut two tracks from it). Anyway, are they selling a vinyl copy of the album at the merch table at the shows?
  6. Just a quick question. I ordered my vinyl copy from merge last week. Before I purchased the site offered three different shipping rates. Which one did you chose. I chose the media mail and it said 4 to 5 weeks. The media mail was free shipping. Can that be right? Lame question, but I guess I figured they couldn't charge extra to have it shipped by Tues could they?
  7. A few comparisons: The Tall version of A Conspiracy is nowhere close to Amorica (I think that Chris really worked on his phrasing for the final Amorica version) The Tall version of High Head Blues sounds flat during the chorus compared to Amorica However Cursed Diamond IMHO is better on Tall and Descending on Tall is different enougth to stand alone. Althougth the Amorica version of Descending maybe the Crowes high water mark. Anyway, if you set it apart it really is strong to these ears, like its own little world.
  8. Well on ya'lls advice I spent a few hours Saturday running around town with my 2 year old son searching for the lost crowes (not a pun). Anyway, I finally found a copy and WHOA MULE! this is awesome. I've listened to all of Tall and half of Band and I'm loving it. I told myself to just listen to Tall on its own merits and try not compare it to Amorica. This is amazing. Feathers and Tornado completely floored me. And with the exception of a few instances where I did compare songs to thier final Amorica incarneration, I thought this was really raw and a perfect picture of a band in its pr
  9. [quote name='tangara' date='Feb 13 2009, 12:43 PM' post='128027 No kidding? I really loved it, thought it was brilliant. Yeah, It just felt distant to me. I got on board with Our Endless Numbered Days and then went backward then forward. Those records and Women King just really hit me hard. I never got that with Shephard's Dog. Maybe it was the production or too much dressing up. I felt like Woman King was about as far as I would like him to go with a full band sound, and I think the more going on musically it distracted from the lyrics and emotion. Some stuff musically adds to th
  10. I don't know, Dents and Shells and Meadow just felt underwhelming to me. To be honest, I think Since was astounding and that is hard to live up to in my mind.
  11. That was an enjoyable read. I own everything this guy has put out, and although I feel his last few releases have been somewhat lacking, I still regard him highly. I also have to say that seeing the Hill released digitally with ability to pick individual tracks will be nice. I've always wanted to include songs from this on mix cd's but was unable. Looking Forward
  12. Well after hearing your responses about the Lost Crowes, I went to look at it on I Tunes and it wasn't there. I swear around the time it was released it was available . what gives? Is it still in print? I know I can get it on Amazon, but would rather just do I tunes or a local store.
  13. oh my oh my. Even though I have gathered about of third of these songs along the way, to have them all on vinyl, with one whole vinyl record being devoted to Trapeze Swinger is mind blowing. I'm really looking forward to this. For me, Shephards Dog was one of the most disapointing releases in some time. I became such a huge fan and was right along with him through Women King and even the set with Calexico, but Shephard's Dog just didn't connect with me emotionally at all (with a few exceptions). This is real treat, and another reason to keep on supporting Sub Pop.
  14. speaking of the Crowes. Just recently got my hands on a vinyl copy of Warpaint. I think this album is pretty solid overall. It doesn't rank up there with their peak in the mid 90's. But I like the fact that it doesn't try to hard to be anything but what it is. The vinyl sounded nice, except it is a dopey picture disc.
  15. How are the Lost Crowes? The Southern Harmony-Three Snakes Period is my favorite, but the tracklisting to a lot of the Lost Crowes appeared redundant. I know they are different takes, but from a guy like yourself who knows the Crowes well, are they worth it. SH & MC TS & OC Amorica SYMM BYS Warpaint Lions or for all of you VC'ers SYMM SH & MC Amorica TS & OC BYS Lions Warpaint (did I get this right?)
  16. I believe he also stated that the remaining 32% was all related to the mixing of a fake drum kit intro for One Wing

Hey, Dr., where do you work? and why would you be gettting an email?
  18. Do I have to spend 4 bucks for all these songs I have, just to get Hey There Mrs. Lovely. Thank You Lost Highway
  19. Oh there is that word again, my wife always uses that one on me
  20. I hate being insulted, but unsure just how I am being insulted?
  21. I really like Evan Dando's music. Maybe he was too cute to take serious or maybe guys were to jealous of his looks, or maybe his out of control drug use and subsequent out of control behavior caused a Ryan Adams ripple effect. I don't know? But I always seriously thought he was underappreciated. He in my mind is power pop stud with a little bit of folk/country sprinkled in. I know, this coming from the guy who can't tell the difference between Kanye and Jay Z, doesn't like U2 and doesn't crap his drawers at the mention of radiohead. So my opinion is meaningless.
  22. I haven't been able to take him seriously since he went on stage with the Smashing Pumpkins at Madison Square Garden during the Mellon Collie tour and did nothing but dance on a speaker during "1979" - no singing, no instrument, just dancing. That is funny. Yeah, the last time I saw him on his first solo tour, he jumped into the very small crowd trying to ring the neck of some loud mouth fan. I don't think Evan is stable, but I believe he is underappreciated. I guess alot like Jay Z.
  23. Not to further fan the flame and make people think I'm some too cool for school guy, but........... I have never liked U2 and don't find them cool Not a huge Radiohead fan and didn't Fleetwood Mac do marching bands back in 79 and get ripped for it. I don't know, it all seems overblown. I'm more of a subtle guy. Beside being really into Pink Floyd laser light shows, I like crappy little bars with Evan Dando strumming an acoustic guitar. That doesn't make my opinion right, it is just what I'm attracted to.
