I know there are 3-4 versions of "Cars Can't Escape" out there, but I was listening to the Tweedy/Bennett show from 7/25/99 and during the between-song banter, you can hear the two of them off-mic talking about what to play next. At the end of the set, Jay suggests to Jeff that they try "Cars Can't Escape" before they launch into the bluegrass-y "Casino Queen." If they were already working that song out in 1999, there's got to be more versions of it on the shelves, considering how much the band deconstructed and reworked songs at the time. Just decided to revisit this set again. It's one of the best, a must for anyone who collects Wilco recordings. Good banter and great interplay between Jeff and Jay. Those shows had some sloppy charm to them, little imperfections peppered throughout the performance. No setlists, you can hear Jeff and Jay off-mic talking about what to play next. And Jay's musical ideas never ran dry; it's almost as if he was working out new sounds, licks, fills and runs right there in the moment onstage.

Giving it the car treatment now = high volume. It's great. Recommended.

Agreed 100%. It's gotta be frustrating to be the interviewee and being probed with the same regurgitated questions ad nauseam.

Yummy. Finally watched that Pitchfork series on this record. Good stuff.

I like the way the vocals sound on this. And it's got more of a live sound than the album - so now I have 2+ great versions of many of these songs.

Huh. I think in '02 they went to a five-piece...but I could be wrong. I wasn't even a fan then. Just looked at that setlist -- still a pretty good night!
