  1. I love Nels, but his haircut is very matronly in that photo.
  2. I love that version. That whole set from 1999 is outstanding.
  3. Hey! I like the song - I just guess I'd prefer a more "whalloping' closer than that tune. A lot of people around me at the show back in December were groaning when they closed with this one. This made me smile. I'm gonna sing this whenever I'm in my kitchen from now on.
  4. Richard Leo Johnson -- The Legend of Vernon McAllister. Paraphrased from AllMusic: A friend gave him a 1930s National Steel guitar, and it had the titular name etched in it. He couldn't find any history on the person, so he created an imagined persona of an old Appalachian guitarist and wrote a song cycle of short pieces for guitar on that musical theme. Performed and recorded entirely in Johnson's attic in Savannah, GA on the National Steel. Light overdubs of percussive tapping, E-Bow, chiming notes and some tape effects. For anyone who digs really haunting, mysterious and beautiful instr
  5. Is that so? My comment is about a Lennon song referencing a Lennon vice.
  6. That's an interesting setlist. Art of Almost Poor Places Bull Black Nova Open Mind Born Alone One Wing Black Moon War on War Far, Far Away Dawned on Me Cruel to be Kind (with Nick Lowe) Noisy opening three! And then the relaxed pace of Open Mind...nice to see.
  7. A ten bob note up his nose = a reference to Lennon's cocaine usage?
  8. The Autumn Defense, self-titled record from 2007. Their best work, in my opinion. (somewhat relevant: my copy of this is autographed...I think I was one of the first 500 to order it or something)
  9. My older brother is good for radio winnings at least a half dozen times a year. It's ridiculous. In college, I once won a prize for answering a trivia question about The Beatles on-air. The question? "What did Mean Mr. Mustard keep up his nose?" The prize? A coupon for a sandwich at a local sub shop. Disappointing.
  10. I don't care what anyone says. I still like this one.
  11. Nor do I -- but it's still lazy to just cop a line used in about 1,000 other articles about the band.
  12. Just when we thought journalism couldn't get any lazier...
  13. Splendid! I shall be ordering this. I wondered if Wilco would ever do one of these...
  14. The new Craig Finn record is streaming on NPR this week: http://www.npr.org/2012/01/15/144960565/first-listen-craig-finn-clear-heart-full-eyes

  16. He made the same reference when people were groaning about the Feist duet on "You and I."

  18. Which is exactly what I've been saying since I first heard it -- that he's literally talking about setting fire to children.
  19. A warm-up? You mean an opening act? I think it's safe to say they won't be on before the time you mentioned.
