Shakespeare In The Alley replied to Wendy's topic in Someone Else's Song
I'd agree with those, mostly. My top two are Run Away and Unspoken. I also love Time Flies for it's demo-like quality. I have DTFM and Pinkerton waiting for me as birthday presents, so I'll probably wait to check them out. But I don't really have a problem with a Pinkerton centered Alone release. It was originally going to be an optional third disc with Pinkerton Deluxe. For my collection's sake, I'm glad it's its own release. Otherwise, the Rivers Cuomo releases would skip from Alone 2 to Alone 4. Cannot have that. -

What are Hurley's keepers in your opinion? I think it's their most overall consistent since Maladroit (which I like a lot) but it still has some classic late-period Weezer crap. Haven't gotten to either of last week's releases yet. Really interested in Pinkerton Deluxe. Moderately interested in Death To False Metal -

Featuring Mike Shuman from Queens of the Stone Age. I hate to say that, since this isn't QOTSA music at all, but it's damn good psych-pop stuff. Some of the best vocal harmonies I've heard in a while. Very impressive. -
Wilco on Beck's Record Club needs your vote!
Shakespeare In The Alley replied to Magnetized's topic in Just A Fan
Eh. I probably will buy it, honestly. But I feel like it kinda defeats the purpose of the project. I loved that they were basically just a bunch of musicians fucking around in the studio. And I loved the covering a whole album aspect. An officially mastered/released compilation isn't the same in either aspect. And I want new Beck music, not a new release of music I already have. Those are the only complaints I have. -

Those sessions are all pretty easy to find as MP3s already. I don't really get the point of this compilation, but the voting thing is a cool idea. But Beck mostly needs to return to Beck material. -
Lincoln Theatre Pre-sale Password?
Shakespeare In The Alley replied to yadasacker's topic in Just A Fan
Not to be an ass, but you might want to not post the actual password. Tickets are already hard enough to get, and I know someone else on the internet will post it anyway, but it's a password for a reason. IMP does a terrific job providing pre-sales as often as possible, but they don't mean much when the passwords are shared like this. Just saying. -
Yeah, I've heard Democrazy. But it seemed like more of a demo thing than a real album. And it's definitely not remarkable or anything. So maybe I shouldn't long for an Albarn solo album. I would have been interested in what venues Blur could fill in the US. I mean, Gorillaz are way bigger here than Blur, and the show I caught (medium sized arena) was far from filled.

Isn't happening. He said there won't be any Damon Albarn world tour for 5/6 years. He's got a young daughter now, and if he plays anything, it likely won't be in the States. And Blur already did the UK reunion thing. I'm more interested in a completely solo album, honestly. Damon's brilliant, we know this, but so much of his music's greatness seems to come from collaborators. I want to hear an all Damon album. And I want to hear the Plastic Beach leftovers.

Why wouldn't this be good? Flea's a ridiculously talented guy, and Damon's pretty much proven he can write killer pop songs in any genre around. Tony Allen and Flea sounds like a sweet rhythm section, regardless of what Damon does with them. Damon's also recently said he's working on a new Gorillaz album, that a new Good/Bad/Queen album is very likely, and that a solo album is less likely for now, but possible in the future. Busy guy.

I figured I could probably get closer seats/cheaper shipping with the regular on-sale. But when I had them pop up in the pre-sale, I wasn't about to throw them back and risk getting nothing. I saw Jim James in July at the Jefferson Theater, which is basically across the street from the Paramount. It's a lovely area.

The Roots too. That's neat to see. One of the best live bands out there. The best, maybe. I kinda wish I was going now. -
Got my two for Charlottesville. Orchestra center. Row F. Initially it said none available, but I tried again and it worked. $8.50 for shipping is ridiculous, but whatever.

Separado better come out in the US. I need to see that. The story is too ridiculous to be true, but it's Gruff, so it somehow makes sense. Without further hijacking this thread, I'll reiterate that SFA has the best catalogue of music I've ever heard. 17 years of consistently great music, and no real "consensus" favorites. Couldn't recommend 'em more highly. -
An acoustic Death Of A Ladies' Man would be VERY interesting. As is, it's a questionable detour for Leonard, albeit a well written one. Those first three are pretty hard not to love. Those first few notes, musical and vocal, of Suzanne are just hypnotic beyond belief. Whoa, that's cool. I need to watch this doc. Is it online anywhere? He seems like that rare musician with ridiculous acclaim all over the world and a level head. In a couple live clips I've seen, he does a little intro for the song, and they're often as beautiful as the songs themselves. There's a good live version of Dres

I've got Songs of Leonard Cohen, Room, Love and Hate, New Skin, Ladies Man, and Various Positions. I'd probably rank them in that order, switching Room and Love/Hate. New Skin is a bit underrated, I think. It's not as folky as the first three, but it's a terrific record. Ladies Man is definitely a bit out there. I don't listen to it as much, but it has some really great songs. I need to get around to all the others. I got really into Cohen last year, and I haven't had much luck finding his other albums since then. I'll look harder though. I actually just (maybe) turned a friend of mine on to L

Love him. One of my biggest musical regrets is not catching him when he toured last year. I wasn't yet a huge fan, but now he's up there with my very favorites for me and I really wish I'd taken the chance to see him live. I'll check that documentary out. I've watched the one on Cohen done in 65 or something, before his music career started. He is a fascinating man. His non musical writing is great too. Read either of his novels?

Don't be foolish. There's no Jim in the band.
-
Oh yeah. But my method of discovering bands tends to hinge on whatever order I find copies of their albums. So I'm not a strict "start from the beginning" guy. But I do almost always recommend getting to the earliest stuff at some point.

AGIB->UT would be a pretty jarring transition.

Listen to Summerteeth and Being There. Those are actual "old school" albums, and they're also the best. EDIT: If you like Ghost, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is probably the best next step.

I've been to a few shows with a "tickets claimed at will call night of show" thing. And in those instances, it wasn't a go to will call, show id, get ticket, get back in line, wait, go in venue thing. It was a show ID at the door, and they let you straight in thing. There were no tickets. One of these was at the 9:30 Club in DC, capacity 1200 or so. It was incredibly efficient.
-
How will it be any different from people getting tickets in advance and then forming a line in front of the venue before the show? Will call windows usually open an hour before doors, so I don't see how it'd be that hectic.

Due to fortunate record store trips, my decision to casually check Eels out has given me four new albums over the past two months, this being the most recent acquisition. I've also bought Electro Shock, Blinking Lights and Tomorrow Morning. Blinking Lights is definitely my favorite, but I'm really enjoying them all. I only decided to listen to Eels because I found out my step dad was good friends with E in high school, but it was a good decision. Quality band.

So it's Sansone's fault tickets are so expensive, isn't it?
