I haven't even watched the latest one yet, it's just not calling out to me.
-
This part is correct. However, it is not ms yvon's show.
-
You go, ms y. Milk 'em for all the bacon they're worth (or, something like that...). Here's hoping for a speedy end to the strike, with good news for all the creatives out there.

You could unionize your workplace... just ask Dreamin'.

I've got the same response to this that I had to the "Dumbledore is gay" controversy: I never really gave it a thought before, but now that it's out there, no, I'm not really all that surprised.

I like the Decemberists, but I still think this sucks. I'm willing to put a portion of my refund from the cancelled tour towards defraying some of Land of Talk's expenses: buy stuff from Land of Talk!
-
Ouch. Yeah, that is unbelievably sucky.

Some details on the $ issues highlighted below. Also in this article: coolness from Jon Stewart, the cast of The Office, and the producer of The Shield.

I think the point is that the producers, network executives, etc., are far more likely to be millionaires than the writers. If they're going to make a few more millions off the alternate revenue streams, don't the writers deserve at least a cut of that?

Definitely pro. Here's his candidate statement:

Sorry, I usually try to inform the previous thread's owner! Yes, thanks to you folks who offered explanations, as noted above, generally 500+ posts is the cut-off for threads that look like they're going to go on forever. There were several baseball threads throughout the season. But how could anyone have missed my "We're the 49ers" thread?!? OK, back on topic: our mayoral election today is pretty much a done deal. The incumbent is a shoo-in, his opponents include several well-meaning people who don't have a hope in hell, and at least one single-issue candidate. That candidate's issu

My dad is not going to be happy to hear that.

Yay Jesse! I was going to offer to start a tree with my Tivo'd version, but a nicely JHamm'd DVD sounds a lot better. (And I've been very remiss about torrenting your DVDs recently. Hope to get back to that soon...)

Technical/server issues, which eventually became more than solace has time to deal with. It was nice to have a dedicated Wilco/Wilco-related tracker, with VCers moderating it, but if it's more trouble than it's worth (considering that there are plenty of other places to get those shows), then I'd rather have solace keeping this place up and running than going nuts trying to keep a tracker online.

Happy day, to the creator of my favorite site on the internet!

Yeah, I'm well aware of that. My point is, people joined Jim Jones for good reasons, then the group developed the cult attributes over time. I don't see what good reason people have for joining Phelps.

All that and a Lucy Mercer joke. I love you, bjorn_skurj. This was my first foray into this thread. Aside from bjorn's rant, I think I could have lived without it, and I'll probably steer clear again from now on.

I think a huge difference between this group and the People's Temple (Jim Jones' group) is that the People's Temple was founded as a church which valued inclusion, and racial intergration, and social justice. It's easy to see why people would have joined that group (particularly in San Francisco in the 1970s), and Jim Jones was actually quite well-respected for much of his career, with strong ties to many local and state politicians. Even the move to Guyana was looked on by most people as a benign move to communal living, in a place where the church members could live outside mainstream mate

What freaks me out most about this group is not Phelps himself or his children and grandchildren. Phelps is quite obviously off his rocker, and the kids were raised by this lunatic, so I can almost understand why they would buy into his worldview, not being exposed to much else. What bothers me is that there are people in their 20s, 30s, 40s, who married into this family. What sort of background would a person have to have to throw in your lot with this group?
-
I love the biker group who formed specifically to shield these funerals from Phelps' group.

I saw this documentary a few months ago, and if you ever get the chance to see it, I recommend it. http://www.lawrence.com/news/2006/nov/24/ryanjones/ It's particularly chilling to hear the children in his family repeating the vileness they hear from their parents and grandparents.

You noticed that they TP'd the Locator? Also, they sprayed silly string on the BT tracker.
-
If you go back to the top of the thread, you'll see that the two fine upstanding members of the community who started it are... no longer members. This wasn't the only nonsense they were up to last night.

Things I think are right with this country
gogo replied to Tweedling's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I think there are exceptions for stuff like that. When a friend of mine went a few years back, he had to fly out of Canada. I'm not sure what the logistics are and how that works, but that was how he did it.
