Oh, nice! A columnist in the SF Chronicle reprints a version of this every year. It always makes me weepy, but in a good way.

Feel free to scoff, but, we do this. We don't cook (ah, the joy of living in the best take-out neighborhood in the city...), and we'll have anywhere from 30 to 50 people for Thanksgiving, depending on who shows up and who brings along friends. This way, it's all in the fridge, we re-heat as necessary (and if necessary, we run down the street and using Grandma's oven for overflow heating-up, whatever doesn't fit into ours) and the left-overs are already in nice containers to send home with folks when they're leaving.

I like Greg Proops! We get really great comedy shows for NYE every year, but the Palace of Fine Arts is a total pain in the ass to get to, and would be even more so on that night.

Hopefully their hard work will pay off, and then we'll all get a chance to contribute by uploading whatever shows we've got lying around.

Oh, thanks Edie. Yeah, some of the same arguments against it still kind of apply, though. What is appropriate for that forum, is it for US politics only, will moderators be spending time moving threads in and out of that forum (and then being bitched at by people who don't agree with our decisions ), will threads that have gone off topic need to be moved, if a non-political thread becomes political does it get moved into that forum, etc. Plus, solace feels pretty stongly that we don't need more subforums, and I definitely agree with him, specifically on this issue. The moderators have discussed this, and decided against it. In the next year, there are going to be numerous U.S. political issues which are legitimately worthy of their own thread, and we can't expect people to consolidate everything into one discussion. Also, a designated "political" thread is only of any value if it's strictly kept to politics, but considering VC's track record we can only assume that any single political thread would be rolled off topic pretty quickly.
