Good luck! We'll definitely need a picture.

As a non-cook, I'm not saying I don't love the big food frenzy of Thanksgiving, but that's not really what it's about for me. I like the fact that it's a holiday when families get together, with no other agenda (not that some people's families don't have agendas, but you know what I mean...). Like I said, our traditions are the poorly-drawn placecards, and not knowing who all is going to show up that day, and it's also the day we pick our family secret-santa names. And of course, we go around the table and say what we're thankful for. That's the best of it. Well, that, and pumpkin pie.

I might have to look into this "cooking" business.
-
I once asked my auntie in Dublin for the recipe for her brown bread. I ended up watching her toss in a handful of this and a pinch of that, and very quickly gave up on any attempt to write it all down. We are not cooks around our place, so our best tradition is a non-foody one, of having the kids make placecards for everyone. Last year even the dogs got placecards at their bowls, and there are always a few blank ones ready for anyone who might show up unexpectedly and need to have their name scribbled in.

It's the Hispanic surge! You're part of a great wave of Rivi sweeping the nation!

I just gave you my recommendation for the first season of Friday Night Lights, and Rescue Me, in the FNL thread.
-
There's been one season of FNL, which is now available on DVD, and the second season is now in first-run on NBC. I cannot recommend the first season highly enough. The pace is slower than many TV dramas, but you'll still find yourself on the edge of your seat on a regular basis. Emotional without being manipulative, realistic relationships, just beautiful. The storylines are verging on outlandish in the second season, but trust me, the first season is some of the most amazing television you'll ever see. I'm also a huge fan of Rescue Me, and I know more than one season of that is availab

Posting in the "best Wilco moments 2007" thread reminded me that even if I had nothing but Wilco in my life, I'd have a ton of cool memories and wonderful friends that I've met through VC and at shows. And I'm lucky enough to have some other stuff too, most importantly my friends and family here in the most beautiful city on earth, as well as friends and family in far-flung spots, who make me feel at home in cities and towns all around the world. But that's not all... So, in no particular order, here's a non-comprehensive list of just a few of the people, places, and things that I'm thankf

Reading this thread is reminding me of a bunch of great ones! But for me, in Iowa City. Soundcheck in Shelburne VT, on the lawn, which was wide open to anyone who happened to be in the vicinity. Muzzle of Bees at my request (via a cute kid!), and then again during the show, which was totally unexpected. The once would have done it for me. Also, the number of kids at that show, and the band's obvious appreciation for having them all there. And for me, getting to meet some more VCers at Edie's place, the night before the second LRS. Also, meeting up with a bunch of VCers a

It's possible that they weren't taped. Unfortunately, not every show is. Usually, when a torrent is up, someone will post about it in the thread for that show in After the Show. Other than that, I'd suggest checking out the bittorrent sites in this thread that Analogman put together. If you keep checking back, sometimes a show will turn up months (or even years!) later.

Buddy Garritty, you keep your hands off that Santiago!!!

I never would have guessed that I'd be in the top 500.

Do you think it's him? Because I'm pretty sure it's him.

Can't go wrong with Seamus Heaney. I read his translation a few years ago, I may need to dust it off before seeing this. I didn't realize it was a blend of animation and live action. Sounds interesting.

Hope the next year is even half as fabulous for you as this year has been!

OMG, you're both right!!!

It's an open-ended invitation, anyway. So if you ever find yourself in San Francisco in November...

We'd love to have you there. C'mon over!

As cryptique pointed out above, the fake stuff, while certainly not natural, is often healthier than real meat. And it has the advantage of not actually being a dead animal. I'm not a vegetarian, but I very rarely eat real meat. One of the times that I will though, is Thanksgiving. As Anya put it on a Thanksgiving episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: "It's a ritual sacrifice. With pie."

Seriously? fakon soysages chicken pretenders shamburger It's a whole game in my house, coming up with the best names for all the fake meat!

I kind of like Mull of Kintyre, too. I'm much more concerned about this: WTF?!?

Oh, nice! A columnist in the SF Chronicle reprints a version of this every year. It always makes me weepy, but in a good way.

Feel free to scoff, but, we do this. We don't cook (ah, the joy of living in the best take-out neighborhood in the city...), and we'll have anywhere from 30 to 50 people for Thanksgiving, depending on who shows up and who brings along friends. This way, it's all in the fridge, we re-heat as necessary (and if necessary, we run down the street and using Grandma's oven for overflow heating-up, whatever doesn't fit into ours) and the left-overs are already in nice containers to send home with folks when they're leaving.
