  1. split off from another thread...this post was in response to a TV appearance that The Damned made while lip synching to "Love Song." Forget about the sartorial trappings, those guys could write SONGS! I think that the 1st wave of british punk was notable for this (cf Pistols, Stranglers, Buzzcocks, Wire, Stiff Little Fingers, Jam, etc). and NYC punk usually loops in a bunch of people who really had nothing to do w/ the genre imo... Blondie, James Chance, Television, Talking Heads, etc...the only real punk band of that era was the Ramones! Cleveland had a better punk scene by far.
  2. blame Sparky, he set the wheel in motion. still, any thread where the Damned get mentioned is worthwhile.
  3. nope, just the basics. i am not one to mess around w/ building my own configurations.
  4. from what I've heard of Thee Oh Sees (~3 LPs or so), I don't see that connection. I'll re-listen to the stuff this weekend.
  5. if _The Lioness_ or esp _Mi Sei Apparso Come Un Fantasma_ doesn't do it, nothing will.
  6. Tweedy might want to get O'Malley or Anderson on speed dial...
  7. i really dig Major Stars, but to me they are more of a live band experience. I realize I'm lucky by having them local, as they don't really tour much outside Boston. I have no arguments w/ #1 and #5. White Hills were awesome at ATP this year. friendly people, too
  8. Howe is a master at that technique. and if you are playing solo, looping gives more depth and possibilities to the show. not that everyone employs it well...
  9. i think comparing Wilco to one's parents is a lot closer to utter foolishness. Probably a more apt analogy would be a friend; once close, then some behavior turned the relationship in a different direction, and the friendship atrophied to the point of indifference. Do you still fondly flip through your high school year book on a routine basis?
  10. don't forget the 'look' part. no, i am not trying to suppress anyone's freedom of speech in anyway. just curious about the investment of energy into what might be perceived as the tail end of the asymptote.
  11. so did you regularly frequent the Dylan board in the long drought between what you considered crap and redemption?
  12. with the amount of people disappointed by SBS and WTA, i am surprised that so many people still hang around this board. at what point does one give up hope on a band they used to love?
  13. I am no fan of LCD but the rubric 'indie rock' is a pretty broad category. i can think of plenty of solid to great bands that can play their instruments and sing in tune, all at once! btw, i am surprised to see the swipe @ My Morning Jacket. you may not like their music which is fine, but James is undeniably a talented singer and they are a tight band (esp live).
  14. wow. you seriously think that? that there's no good music from the last 20 years?
  15. i will say that the small club shows that end at 12:30 take a harder toll than the big venue ones that end at 10 or 11.
  16. well i did three full days in Vegas for the Matador 21st thing (23 bands) from Oct 1-3, saw Chapterhouse + 2 bands on the 5th, and Triptykon and 3 other bands on the 7th. earlier this year, i did 4 shows in 5 days (Kreator/Voivod/Nachtmystium/Evile; Blue Oyster Cult; RJD2+2; Harvey Milk/Coalesce+2) another slot of 4 shows in 6 days (DBT; Black Rebel MotoClub; Wilco; Wilco) in a 7 day span, i saw 5 shows (Oneida; Pearl Jam and then Buzzcocks: Pat Metheny; Neil Young/Bert Jansch) last year was pretty busy too... another 7 day/5 concert week in Feb (Antony; Witch; G Clinton/PFunk; Blitz
  17. one of these: Sun City Girls - Funeral Mariachi Marc Ribot - Silent Movies Boston Spaceships - Our Cubehouse Still Rocks Emeralds - Does It Look Like I'm Here? Grinderman - 2 White Hills - S/T
  18. unless my use of the search function was bungled, there were 20 pages w/o a mention of these guys???
  19. somewhere between 0 and 100% although even at the lowest rating (AM or WTA), it's at least 40% good stuff. so maybe the lower range of 0 is unreasonable, at least for me.
