the noise holocaust portion is also more of a social experiment/endurance test than actual music...for those unfamiliar, it's about a 20-25 minute onslaught of pure noise, guitar/bass/drums/effects pedals, coupled w/ blinding strobes etc. absolutely no discernible elements of melody or harmony whatsoever. my wife walked out after about 10 minutes. the promoters were wise enough to hand out free ear plugs prior to their set (and take into consideration that both Mogwai and Dinosaur Jr played before MBV...yeah, that was a loud night):

normally i would tend to agree w/ you, but the sheer volume of the MBV set i saw was strangely affecting in a most physical way, esp during the infamous 'noise holocaust' portion of "You Made Me Realise." it certainly helped that the venue had a great sound system and wasn't just high-end screech and distortion. i must say that i've never felt anything like it, though the Altar set that Sunn O))) and Boris played came close (coincidentally also at the same venue).

MBV is the loudest band I've ever heard, louder than Boris, than Dinosaur Jr, than Sunn O))), than Sleep, than the Melvins, etc...insanely, and dangerously loud. anyone dig the Sweet Apple record? it's pretty decent.

i didn't notice that particular thread was locked, but it did contain a bit of interesting prattle: so Recorded Nap is a woman? or just a poorly named man?

Tarantino really made his music indelibly linked to cutting off ears, didn't he?

i've been playing so much guitar hero that my middle fingertip is numb. -
well to be fair to Mogwai, they are releasing a regular version of the LP that's not nearly as expensive (ie, see below). and it's an import. it's not like Neil Young's new LP (single LP, at that) having a retail price of $35 or so. that's just silly. i'm assuming that's for the regular edition LP, not the box set.

i was interested in buying the new Mogwai in the limited boxset format, but the UK post is seriously crazy...23 sterling = $35 US...fuck me.

The Rock Curse is when a newer/deluxe edition or box set comes out, and you've already got an earlier version...record companies do this all the time, and I have definitely overlapped a lot of purchases (Pavement, Elvis Costello, The Stooges, Wilco, etc).
