  1. were you @ Savoy Mt? I stayed there last year and it was great. I just called and they are sold out for that weekend. Damn, where there a lot of speculators snapping up reservations left and right???
  2. The Delgados Pavement Mogwai Guided By Voices The Chameleons Big Dipper Electric Wizard Black Sabbath
  3. 'one of most accessible recording artists around'? He's done two phone interviews in his career. I know Seth Tisue...I'll ask his opinion of Mr Smith's accessibility.
  4. jeff buckley grateful dead dave matthews kanye west modest mouse arcade fire das racist titus andronicus anthrax
  5. I think I am out of step w/ most of my fellow staff writers at Prefixmag.com (hint: my list is under Tim Bugbee) http://www.prefixmag.com/features/post/best-albums-2010-staff-lists/46581/
  6. The Avengers rule. I finally saw them this year, great show.
  7. agreed, though i heard a great Zumpano song today ("orange air"). actually, i like the Dan songs too, for the most part.
  8. for The Jam i was talking 1st record (thought i think their finest is certainly _Setting Sons_...that 1st record is among their weakest). The Clash quickly moved past the genre, starting w/ their second LP. Don Letts was probably the biggest influence on The Clash's reggae fixation. right next to the Screamers. punk. seeing them perform their first record was amazing.
  9. agreed...there is punk as an attitude, and punk as a genre.
  10. 'old black hen' doesn't really fit...other than that. 'riding w/ the ghost' has some incredibly great lyrics. as does 'just be simple'
  11. TV, while being a solid band, lost their punk edge (imo) when Hell left. not many punk LPs had guitar solo credits don't get me wrong, i think that Carroll had some solid songs ('It's Too Late' is a fantastic song) but he's certainly not at the level of the UK bands i mentioned. also, Patti Smith was not a punk rock musician. the CB's scene was an amalgam of different musics.
  12. yeah, Ubu was far too weird to be lumped into the punk rock ghetto. other Cle bands would include Mirrors, Styrenes, Electric Eels...DEVO wasn't exactly in the same sound or region, but not too far away. i will definitely give you Richard Hell. Carroll, less so. definitely a different flavor between punk rock and hardcore for me. hardcore kinda starts w/ Touch and Go and Dischord...punk rock would be Dangerhouse, Posh Boy, What Records, etc.
  13. split off from another thread...this post was in response to a TV appearance that The Damned made while lip synching to "Love Song." Forget about the sartorial trappings, those guys could write SONGS! I think that the 1st wave of british punk was notable for this (cf Pistols, Stranglers, Buzzcocks, Wire, Stiff Little Fingers, Jam, etc). and NYC punk usually loops in a bunch of people who really had nothing to do w/ the genre imo... Blondie, James Chance, Television, Talking Heads, etc...the only real punk band of that era was the Ramones! Cleveland had a better punk scene by far.
  14. blame Sparky, he set the wheel in motion. still, any thread where the Damned get mentioned is worthwhile.
  15. nope, just the basics. i am not one to mess around w/ building my own configurations.
  16. from what I've heard of Thee Oh Sees (~3 LPs or so), I don't see that connection. I'll re-listen to the stuff this weekend.
  17. if _The Lioness_ or esp _Mi Sei Apparso Come Un Fantasma_ doesn't do it, nothing will.
  18. Tweedy might want to get O'Malley or Anderson on speed dial...
  19. i really dig Major Stars, but to me they are more of a live band experience. I realize I'm lucky by having them local, as they don't really tour much outside Boston. I have no arguments w/ #1 and #5. White Hills were awesome at ATP this year. friendly people, too
  20. Howe is a master at that technique. and if you are playing solo, looping gives more depth and possibilities to the show. not that everyone employs it well...
